I am using Lemmy as the official community for my ArcaneChat project (https://lemmy.ml/c/ArcaneChat) I do announcements there when there is a new release sharing "what's new?" etc., this gets federated to mastodon/fediverse but when people reply to the post from mastodon the comments doesn't show up in the community (see https://lemmy.ml/post/27324077), is this normal? I am doing something wrong?

thanks in advance!

Some times my posts bring a lot of comments which generate a lot of comments making me unable to read the rest of the comments notifications.

When I was using Reddit, when this happens, I would turn off notifications for the viral post. Is there is a function like this on Lemmy?

I’ve posted things in the past with no issues to several lemmy groups from my sharkey account.

But for the last two days, none of them seem to go through anymore to any of the groups.

Could there be a reason for this?

Sorry I did google... it seems I can't upload them, so other than a link how can I share them?

Another reddit.world community got mad at me for saying "death to US" and now I'm banned. That's fine! But why can't I block them now? I am forced to see their posts every time I go to /all and can't comment or vote, so am effectively forced to view content without any ability to interact.

I don't want to see their posts and should be able to block them from my /all feed

Here look! When I'm not banned there's a clear option to block the community:

But after being banned I now can't block the community, I'm forced to keep seeing it in my feed!

SOLVED: From the user settings page there is a tab for Blocks next to the tab for Settings, and you can manually search for the community you wish to block in a search bar. That worked, even if the UI on the community page was messed up by the block message.

Was looking at my profile and thought it would be fun to see how many upvotes I've received compared to downvotes. Can this be done?

I have noticed in some of my own comments that, I can see a heart next to it. It seems to be new (at least for me) and I was wondering how do we use it and for what is it for?

I was not sure which community to post this, so apologies in advance if this is the wrong community.

If you are unable to view the screenshot, here's a link to the image: screenshot of it

This is a suggestion not sure if right place

We have “hide read posts”

Can we have “show only read posts”

Sometimes I want to find a post again, I can sometimes use key words if I can remember them, but generally difficult to find a post I’ve already looked at

Right now if I write a comment on a community and receive a response I'm getting notified about it via push notification and even email if I set such option in my profile. However for certain subs I might be interested in getting notifications every time someone adds a new thread on it.

Is there any way as of now to achieve that?

What is going on with Hexbear federation? I can still only see Hexbear posts from before the domain kerfluffle. Is lemmy.ml no longer federated with Hexbear?

Why are some comments highlighted (or "greylighted"), e.g. the three in the middle, and some are not?

Is it something to do with my instance (lemmy.ca)? Their instance? Invidividual users?

(I'm viewing in a web browser. Default settings, lemmy.ca)

Silly question, but I haven't seen these since signing up.

I checked my settings, but maybe I missed something.

Not sure if this is even possible but I am new here and I figured out that sorting "everything" by recent comments generally seems to be the best way to get new stuff that's getting talked about still, but it also appears to include brand new posts that come from bots that have zero comments and while I'm not against those posts I prefer to see stuff that has other users actively engaging in the comments as opposed to empty comment sections on bot posts.

Hi there, new user here. 2 of my favorite hobby subreddits don’t have communities on here yet. I am itching to make a full switch but would really miss those. How do I go about creating them so people have a place to move to?

EDIT: Solved, check [email protected]'s comment below.

So, I am currently in the process of setting up a PeerTube and Lemmy instance, both on a dedicated Server running Debian 12. PeerTube seems to work properly by now, but the SMTP settings for Lemmy have been a bit of a headscratcher, and I wasn't able to find a solution.

To set up Lemmy, I followed the "from scratch" guide, and, besides the mail issue, it seems like everything else is working so far.

Note that I am currently in the process of learning-by-doing with this whole project. So, I would not rule out, that I may have overlooked something really obvious and stupid, sorry for taking your time, then.

My settings in /opt/lemmy/lemmy-server/lemmy.hjson:

  email: {
    # Hostname and port of the smtp server
    smtp_server: "localhost:587"
    # Login name for smtp server
    smtp_login: "lemmymail"
    # Password to login to the smtp server
    smtp_password: "REDACTED"
    # Address to send emails from, eg "[email protected]"
    smtp_from_address: "[email protected]"
    # Whether or not smtp connections should use tls. Can be none, tls, or starttls
    tls_type: "starttls"
  }

The error message I get, when trying both resetting a password, or applying as a new user:

WARN Error encountered while processing the incoming HTTP request: lemmy_server::root_span_builder: EmailSendFailed: Connection error: Connection error: invalid peer certificate: NotValidForName

"lemmymail" exists as a local user on the server.

# dovecot --version 2.3.19.1 (9b53102964)

If needed, I can provide additional info from dovecot and/or postfix configurations in the backend. Similar settings as above have worked for PeerTube. As a reference - these are working in production.yaml there:

Peertube smtp settings

# SMTP server to send emails
smtp:
  # smtp or sendmail
  transport: smtp
  # Path to sendmail command. Required if you use sendmail transport
  sendmail: null
  hostname: mail.abnormalbeings.space
port: 587 # If you use StartTLS: 587
  username: '[email protected]'
  password: 'REDACTED'
tls: false # If you use StartTLS: false
  disable_starttls: false
ca_file: null # Used for self signed certificates
  from_address: '[email protected]'

Things I have tried:

  • Changing the user from and to a user with @abnormalbeings.space in the string
  • Changing the user to one I know works, as I use them for automatic PeerTube mail messages
  • Changing the hostname to a FQDN url instead of localhost (without https://)
  • Trying different ports (did not expect that to work)
  • changing tls_type to "none"
  • changing the Password to one containing no special characters (and back)
  • changing smtp_from_address to an actually existing user
  • restarting nginx, dovecot, postfix, lemmy-server and lemmy-ui for good measure after every change

I get “couldn’t find feed at specified location” when trying to add rss from Lemmy.ml

Lemmy tends to have duplicate communities between different instances for many subjects, and this can make it hard to find information here. For instance, if i want to know if anyone has made a constructed language for birds, i have to go to the communities list and search for "conlang" and "constructed language", open every relevant community i find, and search each of those.

Is there a way for me to make a group of all these related communities such that i can see posts from all of them in a single place, and search within all of them at once?

I have found myself cross-posting the same thing in ten different communities because there's no single most popular one. I think something like these groups would also stop this from happening as much. If somebody is going to see my post in one of those communities, it's reasonable for me to assume they'll also have similar communities grouped together and i won't feel the need to repeat myself.

Right now, it shows a generic error image.

Are there specific resolution requirements, or?

EDIT: It solved itself. I guess Lemmy lags a little when propagating new community icons/banners.

Is it possible? I only found the NSFW one

So made this account a year ago or so and would like to change the account name (not the display name).

But can’t figure out how and where. That’s why I was curious whether it is even possible or not.

I see this error when I'm trying to upload an icon image for a community I've recently created:

{"data":{"error":"pictrs_response_error","message":"Your account is too new to upload images"},"state":"success"}

I suppose, if the state of upload was success, and assuming the API output is correct, that the image either got uploaded or got denied after upload.
It seems like we can do an improvement if there is a bug, that we should do perm check before image upload happens, this way, we can save bandwidth (i mean its negligible but i dont know if it happens in other places like image posts etc.).
And we can prevent useless upload/bandwidth usage (which i dont think happens in this case) and if this doesnt happen, then the API has a bug of giving a false status message? Just discussing here before raising an enhancement issue on the github repo. The bug is either of the two cases, I'm not sure.

When I click on a community, for example from https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=Mazda I get take to a Error couldn’t find community on a lemmy instance that isn’t lemmy.ml, where I have my account. Is the community dead and how do I get the link to open on my instance?

I'm using summit if that makes any difference. Sucks having to scroll past 2/3rds of the content.
