Mastodon, and Lemmy are different pieces of software, that communicate using a mutually-compatible protocol.
Sort of like how you can make phone calls with an Android and an iPhone, even though they are very different.
Lemmy.world is a Lemmy instance, like Mastodon.social is a Mastodon server. It is basically a server that runs the Lemmy software, and because Mastodon and Lemmy use ActivityPub, the mutually-compatible protocol, they can communicate.
In relation to lemmy.world specifically,
Ruud
, one of the operators for lemmy.world, also runs mastodon.world(?), one of the major Mastodon servers.what does the fact that they both use ActivityPub mean, in practical terms, for the average user? can i somehow interact with users/content from mastodon via lemmy?
Yes exactly, but it can appear less natural, as mastadon displays it's posts differently. Not sure about the specifics. But lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world is seamless
They're both Lemmy servers, so probably not the best comparison. A better one might be kbin.social as compared to lemmy.world, since Kbin is something that's neither Lemmy nor Mastodon, but will work with both thanks to ActivityPub.
