I suppose at an Apple event if an Apple representative comes on stage and talks about a new iPad you'd be like "Apple never mentioned a new iPad!!!"?

Hilariously stupid. Microsoft lied, don't get so butthurt about it.

The spokesperson (someone hired just to speak in the name of the company) saying "we're not talking about branding at this time", we can just ignore that, what's important is what a dev said when replying to a question at an event because, as we all know, people never put their foot in their mouth or say things the wrong way, especially people who are hired for their technical skills and not their communication skills.
