The way in which the Active and Hot filtering has been stale for days on end has been bugging me so much since I started using Lemmy. I've been scrolling past these 3 posts in that exact order every day since they first appeared 4 days ago. Is there any way to fix this?

Reposting my comment from another thread to spread awareness:

There is a bug in 0.17.4 that stops front pages from updating shortly after the server is restarted, thus resulting in “hot” and "active" showing stale posts.

I have fixed this issue on https://lemm.ee already, you can check our front page to see fresh posts. The fix will soon land in the main Lemmy codebase as well so other instances can take advantage, you can track the issue here: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3076

I have also advised other instance admins that regularly restarting their Lemmy server will work as a band-aid workaround until the proper fix is released, so some admins have already implemented this in order to get their post rankings working again, but the proper fix will come in the next release of Lemmy.

Love it. This is an example of what decentralized means.

Everyone working together towards a common goal.

FOSS devs tackling bugs faster than AAA ad-whore devs 😂

Thanks for your work

[–] V4uban@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Than you for your work!

How often are new releases made?

Whenever the devs are taking a break from deleting Tiananmen images from lemmygrad.ml

[–] escaped_cruzader@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

There is a bug where the whole page displaces when there are new posts

I can't even click a post because if the community has some activity posts just keep moving downward

[–] wilberfan@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just registered on Lemm.ee--and can't log in. Just get a spinner. I'll try again in a few hours.

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Hey! Did you manage to verify your e-mail? Unverified e-mails seem to be the most common cause in this situation.

[–] iByteABit@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

This must be why lemmy.world has so much more recent posts than sh.it.justworks, I was really let down by Lemmy while I was there but I'm finally seeing activity after switching to lemmy.world

[–] jjakc@lemthony.com 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Active is more like forums, where the comments are taken into account. So new comments push it back up towards the top.

Hot seems bugged, for me, it mostly shows me new posts but I know for others it's showing older ones.

On smaller instances you can just use new, or Top Day

On 4chan 15 years ago?

[–] chris@l.roofo.cc 4 points 1 year ago

A few hours ago a fix was merged for this problem. The cause is that when a post from another server was added to the database the rank was not calculated correctly. It should fix itself after a week but I just did a recalculation of of the ranks manually and now hot is finally usable. With version 1.18.0 it should be resolved for good.

[–] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The time weighting is a little funky for Active and Hot. I would say it is understandable if you consider that until a couple weeks ago, Lemmy had far less frequent posts.

I've been finding Top-Day to be better for getting a front page type experience.

[–] faltuuser@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] DRx@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I would like to see them add what kbin does with 3,6,12,etc hour options for top, active, and hot

[–] Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi 8 points 1 year ago

Don't filter by those - filter by new, or new comments.

I constantly filter by different sorts all the time - do a round of refreshes with each. It might take a bit of scrolling sometimes to get to the juicy stuff.

[–] realitista@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Only way I've found is to go into settings and turn off "show read posts".

[–] naeap@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which also seems to hide one owns posts/comments, even in the profile view - at least that was the case for me

[–] realitista@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately yes. You have to temporarily turn it off if you want to view your own stuff. Interestingly exactly the same way it was on Reddit for more than a decade until they fixed it.

[–] poudlardo@terefere.eu 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

choose 'Top day' in the settings, then it won't happen again

I switched to Top Day on jerboa and now everytime I reopen the app it switches back to "Old"

[–] eatham@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago

Sort by new or top

[–] Thorny_Thicket@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

With the current amount of users I find that sorting by new seems to be the best option. It doesn't take too long to catch up even if you're browsing "all"

[–] Ditti@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

This is a known issue in the backend that should be fixed soon: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3076

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 year ago

It's a known bug which should get fixed next release. Try bugging your admin to restart the lemmy server though, that fixes it for a little bit. I restart mine every few hours.

[–] ghariksforge@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It would be great if I can mix Active and Hot feeds in a 50/50% way. That would be the perfect mix of trending and new content.

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

All you have to do is switch to new or anything other than default, but yes, having default be 4d old content doesn't look good.

[–] Silviecat44@vlemmy.net 2 points 1 year ago

I have had this issue. perhaps turning off read posts will help. I will try it

[–] TheGreenGolem@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago
[–] ghariksforge@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I usually filter by Top Day to avoid this.

[–] skillissuer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

try deselecting all languages in account settings

[–] BurnTheRight@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is why I switched to Kbin. Problem solved immediately.

[–] zalack@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Same here. Tried Lemmy for a day, then Kbin the next. Content always feels much fresher on Kbin.
