From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

What Linux distribution or distributions do you personally use?

I myself am a daily Void user. I used to use Devuan, but wanted to try rolling release and ended up loving Void!

Linux Mint Cinnamon. I've been using it for about seven years now. It offers a very good, traditional desktop experience.

[–] pancake@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Mint, Manjaro and Gentoo atm.

[–] sam@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Fedora for desktop/laptop, and Debian or Ubuntu for my servers.

[–] Auster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Mint 21.1 Xfce, and if Android counts, ArrowOS 13 (on phone) and BlissOS (on an old computer)

[–] fl1ghtless@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Not for daily use but I run 3 Ubuntu servers here hosting various types of services.

I've been distro hopping (mostly Debian-based) for a while, and for some reason, I just kind of settled on Zorin. Mostly because I didn't feel like setting things up again, but it's also a decent distro that just works for me.

I haven't used Linux much last few years, used to run Ubuntu. Currently I have a crappy old hp stream thats happily running mint os tho! Poor thing barely booted windows at one point, now its again capable of surfing the web and downloading/viewing docs. Any better lightweight distros out anybody can reccomend?

[–] ClonedPuffin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Used to distrohopp a lot but now i have used EndeavourOS for a year and it's perfect for me. Basically Arch but a little more stable and faster to install

I used to use Slack, but it lost its way. Arch is really, really cool, but I've become more interested in Void. Currently, perhaps surprisingly, I use Alpine because I like how minimal it is.

I currently have Kubuntu on my most-used Linux machine but, since a friend recommended it to me, I've been considering hopping to KDE Neon when I have some time to learn a new distro. (I've tried GNOME and I don't really care for it, but KDE Plasma fits like a glove.) I'm not extremely experienced with desktop Linux, so I'd love to hear about others' experiences with either distro and how they might compare.

Nixos since 3-4 years. Arch Linux before that.

[–] bzImage@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

What advantages have Nixos over.. lets say arch or debian stable ?

[–] dj3hac@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Nobara on my gaming PC, I keep windows on a laptop just incase i need it for something. So far literally the only thing I needed windows for is to rip a steam skin from an installer so I could port it to Linux lol.

[–] bahcodad@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Tried various ubuntu/debian based distros in a vm on my windows laptop at first. Eventually realised I was only using Windows to run the vm so took the plunge and wiped windows, I couldn't be happier. I've rolled around a bit but for now I'm settled on arch with xmonad and I love it

Been using Fedora Ublue for a while now. It really just works and is up to date. Even nvidia drivers and secure boot works immediately. The updates also happen automatically and are actually just immages being downloaded and switched to by a reboot. And of courss I have a distrobox with arch for the aur

[–] EGirlEnthusiast@lemmy.fmhy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Currently using Mint 21.1 with KDE Plasma as a DE

[–] kraxyk@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Proxmox for VMs. Fedora on my personal workhorse laptop. Arch for my PineTab 2

[–] davefischer@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Just recently switched my main server to Void linux. I tried it because it doesn't use systemd, but then I ran across something in the install docs like: just add the commands for your network config to /etc/rc.local, and that had me hooked. That's how you'd do it in V7 Unix, ha ha! My desktop is openbsd, but I'm planning on switching that over to Void soon. (I tried, and ran into audio problems, haven't had a chance to try again.)

I've been on Linux for around a year now and for most of that I've been on either Arch or Gentoo. On Arch I start to miss the features of Gentoo and it's modularity, so I switch. Then on Gentoo I start to get frustrated from my inexperience and move back to Arch. Then the cycle repeats. Personally though, I like Gentoo better, I just get lazy sometimes and move to Arch.

I use Mint for desktops, Debian for servers. There's a mix of RPiOS, Armbian, and some other ARM linuxes for the SBC systems.

I've got some kids in Ubuntu for hardware reasons, but it's not a go to.

I really miss Crunchbang #! Linux. That was a great low resource release.

I am currently using Alpine linux on my servers and arch linux on my laptop but I plan on switching my laptop to alpine this summer. I am currently using the sway window manager and I used awesome wm before that.

[–] 42triangles@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I used to distro hop A LOT, but by now I'm mostly on Arch [my laptop still runs Nix but I'm thinking of going back to Arch on that one too - Nix is nice but I feel like the difficulties for non-pre-packaged stuff aren't worth it for me personally], just because it's simple enough that I know where to look to fix things, plus the wiki is great.

I'll never tell :P BTW

[–] ReakDuck@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I wish Arch could be installed everywhere. My Desktop PC, Laptop and Raspberry PI 4 use Arch Linux while my Server used to run Rocky Linux but is abandoned and my Chromebook Duet 3 uses Debian 12 with KDE. I think I could easily install Arch on it after having my Kernel compiled and working with debian.

The Star64 still needs development to be used.

[–] djvinniev77@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I am using Ubuntu lunar.. don't shoot me. Lol

Although I am always looking for a faster feeling OS.. so send up your recommendations.

I run an Archman installation that I then deconstructed and then built back up again with Openbox as the WM. Was something I did to improve my knowledge of how Linux works.

Really happy with the results, Openbox is lightning fast.

[–] Richardisaguy@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Fedora KDE, I was using opensuse KDE previously but software availability was being a pretty big annoyance

[–] KitchenNo2246@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Linux Mint for desktops because even as an experienced Linux user, I want a system that has a good balance been stability and having the latest packages. Plus Cinnamon is awesome.

For servers it is 100% Debian and always has been.

[–] archchan@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Look at my username and take a wild guess btw lol

Started on Ubuntu like most, but Arch feels like home.

Kubuntu 23.04. Eventually going to try Mint, see if it's more stable on my machine, but there isn't time just now.

[–] Vorthas@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

EndeavourOS.

Basically Arch Linux with a nice installer, simple and easy to set up. Hopped to it from Manjaro a few months back and been enjoying it ever since.

[–] Rega@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I always wanted to migrate to Endevour. But for some reason, I can't install it on my duel boot machine. Keeps giving me the same error. I've switched to Manjaro instead and it works just fine.

[–] brad@toad.work 1 points 1 year ago

Ubuntu server for my servers, Arch w/ i3 on my browsing/daily use box, and several laptops that rotate between whatever I get the itch to install on any given day.
