I'm not using matrix, I have tried it and it's not suitable for our community. Problem is the ux and that most people in our group are not technically minded. We're trying out fluxer which is more discord like.

Fluxer recently added self hosting and it has a mobile app in beta and soon to be released, admin from a web GUI, not difficult to host, and has a good amount of discord features. It is somewhat heavy though.
Did try it but got nothing that needed to be upgraded still, I feel it might've just been an motd bug
