Yeah, but that’s the thing, the experts (GIS people and cartographers in general) would immediately tell you that AI can’t make accurate maps. As someone who makes maps as a chunk of my job, I’m not at all surprised.
Which, like you said, is telling about LLMs in general, but it should also remind all of us that for the most part, people get paid for their job because they have cultivated their skills over the course of their career.
I can make a really good data-driven map from scratch in minutes. That’s a skill I have devoted years to, and I get paid because my employer likes the quality of the maps I make and how fast I can make them.
It’s exhausting to see people try to take my job by generating the shittiest potato-quality crap, and thinking it’s acceptable.
For sure, I took no offense, and I can totally understand how anyone might assume that AI would be good at producing a map, so, until it’s possible I feel like I have to keep showing my job’s still relevant! Pretty fucked up actually.
