For sure, I took no offense, and I can totally understand how anyone might assume that AI would be good at producing a map, so, until it’s possible I feel like I have to keep showing my job’s still relevant! Pretty fucked up actually.

Yeah, but that’s the thing, the experts (GIS people and cartographers in general) would immediately tell you that AI can’t make accurate maps. As someone who makes maps as a chunk of my job, I’m not at all surprised.

Which, like you said, is telling about LLMs in general, but it should also remind all of us that for the most part, people get paid for their job because they have cultivated their skills over the course of their career.

I can make a really good data-driven map from scratch in minutes. That’s a skill I have devoted years to, and I get paid because my employer likes the quality of the maps I make and how fast I can make them.

It’s exhausting to see people try to take my job by generating the shittiest potato-quality crap, and thinking it’s acceptable.

Damn, that kinda sucks, I really enjoyed it. To be fair it doesn’t really need a second season, the story was relatively self-contained. But watching Yahya Abdul Mateen and Ben Kingsley together was a joy. They’re both amazing actors.

He touches on this a bit, but we absolutely can prevent the new kinds of wildfires we’re seeing, but not all of them. Some are unavoidable, but if we put any amount of attention to fuels management and prevention strategies, and actually enforced it, we could absolutely prevent the deadliest outcomes.

It’s a lack of imagination and political cowardice that prevents us from preventing wildfires.

This is just an opinion piece, though Kristof does have a history of doing pretty solid reporting for his opinion pieces. He’s the one who exposed all the illegal and exploitative shit on mainstream porn sites years ago, which led to a serious overhaul of content. So opinion pieces can still matter, though they’re usually not meant to have this big an impact.

All that to say opinion pieces are not subject to the same journalistic rigor as a standard article, though proper NYtimes journalism leaves a lot to be desired, especially when discussing the genocide in Palestine.

That may be true, and I hope it is, but if Nolan’s weird deal with Morocco to film in occupied Western Sahara was better publicized, he’d probably lose them on that. Some serious colonial bullshit he pulled for this movie.

If you don’t want to spend a premium on a commercial product or a large computer monitor (which will be more expensive than an off the shelf modern tv if you want high resolution), then I’m sorry to say your best bet is to simply never connect your tv to the internet. I have a Hisense U8H 55” tv, and it’s amazing. It has all the stupid shit included, but I literally never see any of it, because it’s not connected to the internet and my input is either set to my Apple TV or my computer’s HDMI port.

It’s 4K, has Dolby Vision, HDR10, filmmaker mode, etc., all the bells and whistles and it has never touched the internet, despite being capable of being a huge piece of shit if I ever did connect it, so I just don’t. It’s also about 4 years old at this point, and its software has never been updated (because I won’t connect it to the internet), still works like the day I bought it.

I don’t see anyone ignoring this kind of violent rhetoric. In fact, the very article you posted is from a left-leaning organization attempting to shine a light on it.

What do you suggest, specifically? If your answer is the same kind of rhetoric and advocating for violence against the right, then you’ve already lost me. Violence, despite what many here may want to believe, is never justified and will not achieve the outcomes you hope. I realize that may sound naive to some, but it’s what I firmly believe.

100% agree. My only two full posts, on this account and my previous instance accounts combined, were to this community about issues that seemed to me to be easily fixable, and lots of people chimed in to agree, but nope, indifference.
