We all know the quintessential kiwi saying "fuck its cold!"

What temperature is it for you?

For me, anything below 12 degrees is "cold"

You?

Here i am standing over yet another bowl of weetbix and chunky milk that was only bought four days ago. Its happened like five or six times in the last year, milk becomes chunky before the best before date. I usually do 1x 2Litre bottle a week, always stored in fridge, only comes out for a few mins a day. My routine hasn't changed and yet now the milk goes to shit within 4 days of opening, what the fuck is going on?! Fonterra explain!

Fridge is fine this observation has occurred in multiple fridges

No one else in the house at moment to take swings from

A bit of politics but honestly mostly a rant.

My local GP clinic has increased it’s prices again, second time this year, and a full price for a medical GP consult is now $79. The response from the community is understandably varying degrees and combinations of shocked, horrified, angry, frustrated, hopeless, and disinterested. Some people are understanding of the reasons behind the fee increase. Some people have already started to take it out on the staff. And some out-of-touch people are shrugging it off with comments like “if you can’t afford it, don’t go” and “well that’s what health insurance is for”.

I work in primary health and it breaks my heart to think that more and more people are going to have difficulty accessing healthcare now. I wish all healthcare was free or low-cost at point of care. I wish redirecting people to other facilities if they can’t afford to pay and are safe to be turned away was not an option nor part of the job. We’ve been trying to cut costs for so long, we’re now resorting to things like cutting staff hours (which has significantly increased the workload for the remaining staff) and “use one paper towel instead of two when drying your hands”. We take work home with us because we’re not given admin time, and when we do get a few hours allocated we end up being pulled to the floor anyway because if someone calls in sick it’s cheaper to use someone who is already scheduled to work than to call another person in on their day off. Things that used to be managed by one’s GP practice, like screening recalls and preventative/proactive care, are at risk of becoming delayed or neglected.

What do you do when the funding is so insufficient, and the clinic pleads with the PHO for support, and the PHOs plead with the MOH to make better decisions, and at the end of the day we’re told to “charge the patients more”? I’ve emailed my MP, emailed Shane Reti, and have been encouraging anyone I know who is also unhappy with the current state of things to do the same. In the meantime we try so hard to help people as best as we can but sometimes it feels so futile.

We're from Scandinavia and are expecting a baby girl.

We are considering calling her Tora (a female version Thor), but are worried about alternate meanings in te reo, which the dictionary translates to "burn" and "blaze" (yay) and.. well.. "erect" (not so yay).

How likely would she be made fun of at school for this?

I contacted the journalist today to ask about what hospital department the women were admitted to.

I'm a teacher, so I understand that students need to be trained, so I was hoping it was a situation of the women being in Obstetrics and Gynecology, in for some sort of vaginal surgery, and the med students assisted without the women knowing - still not good, but at least they're doing the same thing as the Dr was doing to the patient.

The women were admitted to the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department.

The women were having Caesarean sections.

This feels worse to me in so many ways.

  1. In order to be booked in for a General Anesthetic C-Section, there is often cause for concern with the health of the mother and baby. People can chose to give birth via c-section with no pregnancy issues, but they will likely just use an epidural. GA is often used during emergency C-Sections also. See page 16 of the NZ Maternity Clinical Indicators for this info.
  2. These are women less likely to notice vaginal bleeding and pain as being unexpected or strange, given they're undergoing the birthing process. A woman waking up from stomach surgery with a bleeding and sore vagina - immediate red flag. A woman waking from a C-Section with the same issue is going to be sore throughout after 9 months of pregnancy and the C-Section etc.

Point 2 is the one in particular that I'm finding incredibly chilling. To me it looks like a deliberate attempt to disguise or hide what they're doing.

Anyway...yay.
