"Some Thoughts on Ways Mods Can Stay in Malicious Compliance, in Order To Prolong the Protest and Their Removal by Admins.

r/funny should be proud. They sat in the crosshairs for longer than anyone thought they would. I hope they, and all the other subs pressured into going restricted or public, continue to show their support in some unique way. Some ideas:

  • Include kbin/lemmy equivalent magazines in the banner and a sticky post. Sticky an autocomment on every post with fediverse info.

  • Only use the standard mod tools and halve your time commitment. "We went back to using the tools they gave us and this is how it will be from now on. Welcome to the new Reddit you guys chose by not supporting the blackout!"

  • Mark the sub NSFW. Realistically, there's rarely a reason anyone in an office should be on Reddit. This should also make the sub unavailable for mobile users when the API changes go into effect.

  • Make every day April Fool's Day. Like when r/DataIsBeautiful posted nothing but pics of Star Trek's Data. If you have no ideas, just google the sub name and see what you find!

    • PIC is also:
      • a type of long catheter that is inserted through a peripheral vein, often in the arm, into a larger vein in the body, used when intravenous treatment is required over a long period. Seems like an important topic for r/Pics to cover. (Dictionary.com)
      • Slang abbreviation for Partner In Crime, so maybe change focus to famous crime duos (Urban Dictionary)
      • Slang for a movie, so become the movie subreddit (Encyclopedia Britannica)
  • Set unreasonable posting requirements without an announcement, but noting the change in the side bar. Gotta read the fine print."

Set posts to require moderator approval.

  • Approve 1 post every hour or only approve really poor quality ones.

Fracture the community.

  • Announce alternative subs for your topic, which you also control, and encourage unsubbing from the original sub. Do some of the above, while also setting the sub to require accounts be subscribed for a month to post. Those that leave will find nothing in the alt subs, which they can't post to, and be unable to post on the main sub for a month. Also, fracturing the large subs will reduce traffic overall, due to the chaos.

  • Remove and replace scrub mods where possible. If you get booted down the line, another supporter can continue the pattern.

  • Forward any post remotely related to a product advertised on Reddit to that company's media contact for approval. Advertisers should know what is being associated with their brands. (And if some really gnarly stuff gets submitted by some non-mod account, it might be more impactful."

We must fight back. Spread the word.

Hello all. Also new and arriving from Reddit. What a mess it is over there!

I've been seeing a lot of angst and emotion on the Reddit migration, which results in either defeatism or blind optimism. In the end, it probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to do more fact-based research into the subject.

I put my findings and my analysis into what it would actually take to kill Reddit, based on the deaths of Digg and MySpace. tl;dr it's a lot less dramatic than most people would think.

“I am willing to work with Reddit.”

Steve Huffman said in an interview that Elon Musk's cost-cutting at Twitter was inspiring and that the two have chatted "a handful of times."

now you can tell Reddit to get fucked, democratically

📢EDIT: a_knife just removed ALL OTHER MODS!

Original starbucks post by accused inactive mod a_knife

Post about what ACTUALLY happened

Proof of only active mods agreeing to go private

Proof that a_knife doesn't even MOD the sub they made the unilateral decision to reopen

Proof of a_knife removing a mod

Funny thing is, Reddit will likely boot the 3 of them, and make a_knife top mod, which is DIRECTLY AGAINST their claims to remove any mods making unilateral decisions, because of course, it only applies if that unilateral decision is to go private. Spread the word

What if Reddit federated? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

Hey all, I'm just wondering if I could get some perspective on this from outside people.

There are a ton of subs that are still on reddit, don't seem to be interested in moving over, and still have a plethora of data. A lot of them have links to outside sources, which is great because you can just post that over here. But many of them have extensively utilized the built-in wiki function for their subreddits, and have huge, written out posts of lots of easy-to-read information synthesized for their userbase.

Because they are reddit wikis, my first instinct would be to not actually link directly to that wiki, but to copy it elsewhere. But then that divorces the content from the creator, as they are often credited as reddit users. It feels a little easier when the person who created the wiki, or is marked as the last person to edit the wiki, doesn't appear to be an active reddit user anymore, because that kind of assumes that they have abandoned the data to be used freely - but I feel less certain when the wikis are being semi-actively maintained by reddit users.

What are your thoughts on this?

As I suspect many of you have also found, avoiding Reddit is easier in theory than in practice due to the longstanding reciprocal nature of:

  • Google Search results being useless without Reddit
  • Searching Reddit being useless without Google

It seems unfair that Reddit Inc. the Profit-Driven Company should be able to hold hostage the content created by Reddit the Community of Users. The good news is that there are scripts and extensions available to redirect those Google links to Reddit alternative front ends such as teddit & libreddit.

Right now, these use the official API. After the API changes go live, I suspect the big brains of the internet will come up with an alternative, something along the lines of how Nitter has been able to pull Twitter data via unofficial APIs.

Chrome:

Teddit Please
Privacy Redirect

Firefox:

Teddit redirect
Libreddit

Tampermonkey scripts:

Reddit-to-Teddit Redirector
Reddit-to-Libreddit

Anyone else read this? The arrogance is palpable.

Steve Huffman said he has planned to change the site's rules so that users had the power to vote out moderators, following a 48-hour protest blackout.

Is there a way to filter out content from the fediverse-at-large by language?

Ideally I would like to select a few languages I have some familiarity with, but I'd also accept a "primary language only" setting.

(Edit: I guess I should have posted this in a space more specific to kbin, my bad)

Update: Update: we're live @rimworldporn

Continuing my first question

First of all, this is looking great and I can imagine this platform is under a lot of stress due to the mass migration from Reddit. Keep up the good work!

I am seriously considering moving RimWorldPorn to kbin. It looks good so far, and I like the decentralized nature.

-What happens if this instance falls away somehow? Will the images be preserved due to the decentralized nature?
-Will it be possible to make local backups? (a feature which reddit lacks)
-Will it be possible to set the add type to photo only for /m/RimWorldPorn?
-What is the maximum allowed filesize/resolution? It seems 5.5MB, unknown for X*Y. Can these potentially be increased, for magazines like these?
-I have almost 1000 renders on /r/reddit. Can those all be posted on /m/RimWorldPorn? (I have them stored locally)
-Is it possible for moderators to receive notifications when new images are added?
-Less important: would it be possible to use square thumbnails?

thank you!

Reddit mods caving the second their status as mods is threatened is an absolute embarrassment. Not only do the prove spez right, they also reenforce the notion that Reddit without 3rd party apps is something they can live with - proving the blackouts were unnecessary and just an emotional reaction. What a joke!

…I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add a user pic/avatar. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Mastodon - What should I know? Is there a reason I should pick one mastodon instance over another?

Reddit refuge here, just getting comfortable in Kbin/Lemmy and plan to eventually join in the rest of the Fediverse, and thinking Mastodon would be my next step.

Does anyone know how to modify Shreddit?

Like from https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/34112/Updated-Reddit-is-quietly-restoring-deleted-AND-overwritten-posts-and#entry-comment-140501

https://github.com/jdbassa/Shreddit
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python-shreddit-git

I really want to use this, but I have a couple of additional requirements:

First, to save a copy of my content locally on my hard disk (somewhere, anywhere, any format is fine) before overwriting and deleting the comment/post. So that I can manually repost on kbin/fediverse later.

Second, one particular post and comment I'd like to exclude from deletion. I've already overwritten with my good-bye reddit message and - as it was my most popular post ever - like to leave it up so folks who used to go back to that post to see my advice will know where to follow up to find me again.

I'd actually prefer to leave all my comments up with just the modified message but I think I have too many for the tools to delete automatically - instead I'd have to delete, wait a bit for the queue to refresh, then delete again as older comments start showing up on the API.

And I'm not confident that Reddit will get back to me before July 1 about my data retrevial request, which might make automatically deleting much harder.

Anyone know of a modified Shreddit that can handle these two requirements?

I know u/spez is seeing us delete our accounts. There has to be some kind of metrics that's showing that. He is ignoring redditors that made reddit so famous.

Specifically the OP post title & body? I feel like it could help to utilize the remaining time we have left with the API to automatically populate some of these feeds to help entice more people to stick around.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Hey folks,

I tried replying to a handful of comments on see https://kbin.social/m/reddit@lemmy.ml/t/34167/Reddit-is-restoring-deleted-posts#entry-comment-141186 (where it was stated that GDPR doesn't apply to Reddit posts)

I can see those comments under my own profile but when I reload the article my replies don't show up.

Any idea what's going on?
