I started this hobby around 5 years ago, and I wished that I would have all these diversity of devices to choose when I was looking to get my handheld. As a non-collector, I’m just happy to see that everyone that gets into this, has a huge range of devices to choose. I know people do complain the quality of this devices… but honestly for the prices that some of these go, I really don’t see any problem with it. I do wish they partnered with guys like muOS, or onion OS for their devices before selling them, but I guess that’s almost impossible from my understanding hehe, let me know your thoughts.

Original Title: We are FINALLY getting a new PS2/GC capable small pocketable 4:3 handheld with the new Retroid Pocket Mini!!! It has been confirmed to pack a Snapdragon chip more powerful than the D900 of the RP4 base model. RG405M and Pocket 2S owners rejoice!

As some of you may already know, the Retroid Mini has just been announced in a teaser trailer:

And there are MANY reasons to be excited:

  • 4:3 screen - FINALLY, no more black bars during emulation
  • ergonomic form factor - small thin slabs can be great for pocketability, but they can be uncomfortable to play. As the RG40XX and RG Cube demonstrated, ergonomics matter!
  • cooling vent on the back - this definitely means it's something far more powerful than the H700 shovelware we keep getting. Likely PS2/GC capable as the Pocket 2S had no vent but could play some Gamecube and PS2.

The BEST news, though? It was confirmed elsewhere that retroid had an upcoming handheld powered by a Snapdragon chip more powerful than the D900 processor of the Retroid Pocket 4 Base, and this DEFINITELY fits the description perfectly.

Guessing Retroid got sick of waiting for Anbernic to release the long awaited PS2/GC capable pocketable RG406 and said, "Screw it, I'll do it myself" lmao.

I figured, with the model being shown in the teaser probably being close to the final product, and also possibly reusing some components like the D-pad or the buttons from earlier Retroid models, I could probably perspective-warp the images shown in the teaser trailer to calculate the screen size.

So I hopped into Photoshop to do just that. I found a good still that showed the whole device and I adjusted it for perspective, making sure the screen is 4:3. (Obviously this looks odd -- I can't make a front perspective correct without majorly adjusting the image, which I think kind of defeats the point)

Then I found a Retroid Pocket 4 pro video from their Youtube channel and overlayed it to match the D-pad and face buttons.

D-pad match:

Face buttons match at the same scale: (See how the B and Y line up perfectly?)

and full images overlayed, anchored at the d-pad:

Then I drew a diagonal line over the Retroid Pocket 4 pro. We know that the RP4 is 4,7 inches. So by measuring the pixel length of the line we draw, we can calculate the screen size of the Mini. This came out at 327 pixels:

327 / 4,7 = 69.5744, this is the amount of px per inch. So now we take the measurement of our perspective-warped screenshot and measure its screen diagonal in pixels.

This came out at 247px (or 248px actually, in hindsight). Now we divide 247 by 69,5744 (our pixels per inch) and we get...

3.56 inch. Which I believe to be 3.5 inch, as it is based on a visual approximation of the d-pad and face buttons.

Of course, this is based on a warped screenshot approximation, so take it with a grain of salt.

The RG40XXV is now the THIRD vertical "XX" handheld that Anbernic has released, but this one has a few perks: a beautiful 4" display, nice thin bezels, custom firmware on day one, and a d-pad that perfectly passes my most rigorous testing. It’s a device that is both easy to recommend and easy to skip if you already have a similar device or aren’t interested in its vertical form factor.

Didn’t see anybody mention it yet, but exciting news to see Daijishou has seen its first new update in almost a year.

Hi all, I'm the owner of OaksPokeBox.com giving away a brand new Miyoo Mini + (Transparent Purple) to a lucky member of the r/SBCGaming community (with RTC). All you have to do is leave a comment with your favorite retro game, and on August 29th around 1PM eastern US time I'll use Reddit Raffler to choose a winner. Couple things to keep in mind so this giveaway conforms to the community's rules.

  1. While this giveaway is approved by the mods of r/SBCGaming it is in no way their responsibility. This giveway is purely done by OaksPokeBox.com

  2. USA residents only, sorry, it's just been very tricky to ship these things overseas.

  3. Only Reddit accounts that are at least 30 days old will be considered for the raffle.

  4. The winner will receive the unit completely free, I'm even paying the shipping charges.

  5. You'll receive the unit just like I sell them. It'll have Onion OS preinstalled on a 32GB SanDisk branded SD card with no BIOS/ROMS included.

  6. Unit will come in a Miyoo Mini + box, carrying case not included.

More details on the system on the business product page.

I’ve spent the past few days with the Mini M, so here are my thoughts. It is best-in-class among cheap micro handhelds in some key areas (sticks, screen, overall feel in the hand), but it’s also worse than others regarding some important features too (d-pad diagonals!). When you combine that with the fact the company said they are releasing an update soon with a new SoC, I’d say this is a device for hobbyists, and most others can safely wait a few months to see if the upgraded version is an improvement.

Still a really solid output from a smaller company, and I’m amazed that they can put good sticks in a $40 when Anbernic seemingly cannot.

Hey all, I'm writing this just because most of this is buried in the discord and I think it's worth surfacing to the sub. I might not have all the details spot on, there's a lot of chatter to keep track of but I just wanted to get this out there and shout out Magic X a bit.

The Mini M: device currently has its CPU and GPU locked at 1.3GHz, with about a third of its power restricted by the firmware. MagicX was not aware of this until it launched and some CFW devs were fiddling with it in the discord. MagicX had contracted a developer to do the firmware and they apparently just copy pasted the FW from a similar device and never increased the clock speeds. MagicX went back to them to fix it and the developer is being unresponsive and unhelpful. MagicX at least got some of the firmware code so CFW devs like the person behind PlumOS, moto, could attempt to improve it. But the developer won't give MagicX the source code apparently.

Community developers, including those behind GammaOS and MinUI, are already working to address the clock speed issue, with PlumOS now reaching 1.6GHz. (Shoutout moto for spearheading it) They seem to be taking it as a challenge so I think they'll get it worked out. But once the Mini+ comes out there won't be a lot of reason to focus on it.

The Mini M+: As a result of the above they went to Allwinner about a new chip and development. The new chip, A133P, will have wifi and most likely come with android. They said they will call it the Mini M+, are targeting an October launch, $55, and are planning to offer a $10-$15 discount coupon to owners of the Mini M if they can't get improved firmware since they are essentially hard locked to a lower clock speed and it's out of their control. (Todays the last day for the developer to give them this firmware) They said they are planning to have Daijisho as the stock front end.

They also have brought up Knulli OS and are asking what they would need to provide or who to talk to about having Knulli on the Mini+. Idk how far that will go but the fact they are even poking around that direction should say something. They also said they'd provide the Linux source code of the device to the community.

MagicX The Company: Straight up, the MagicX rep has been amazing. He's very involved with the community, has been great about communicating the communities questions to his superiors and the info back down. He's said repeatedly they are actually really upset by the Mini M's FW situation and actively encourages CFW devs however they can. MagicX the company seems really interested in making devices the community wants and are totally open to things like custom firmware and stuff. They even said they'd be willing to send out prototypes to CFW devs and take the communities advice for the out of the box settings.

And even bigger than this device they've been posting renders and specs for new devices they are planning to do and taking direct feedback about them. Going so far as to redo their models, taking votes on setups, openly talking about what parts they can source, and genuinely being like "What kind of device do you want?" That combined with how much they love to support the CFW devs. It's all the right moves honestly and I think something worth recognizing and encouraging.

Aliexpress has another 'sale' running right now which seem to be happening almost constantly at this point. Are the prices actually a sale or is it just a marketing gimmick? (If you're just looking for the price history, the links/images are at the bottom of this post)

Since I've started tracking prices on Aliexpress with my clean link, affiliate-free spreadsheet, there have been 3 of these sales. They are the mid July vacation sale, the monthly choice sale at the beginning of August, and the back to school sale currently going on. Aside from shuffling around prices and some outliers such as the v10, it seems as if most of the devices are around the same price or slightly more expensive than they were during the mid-July sale. However, there are a bunch of new coupon codes I have found while scouring YouTube that will bring these prices down to more attractive levels. These are better than the usual aliexpress coupon codes that you see when you visit their website. However, the drawback is that I am not sure if these are only limited to US customers.

They are: (All of them expire on 8/25)

| ETAP9/JOEL9/ANC9/TALK9/GREG9/OWN9 | 9 off 30 or more | |

|

| | ETAP15/JOEL15/ANC15/TALK15/GREG15/OWN15 | 15 off 60 or more | | ETAP25/JOEL25/ANC25/TALK25/GREG25/OWN25 | 25 off 100 or more |

Additionally, several prominent cashback websites are giving big kickbacks if you use them right now.

| Bing Rewards | Up to 18% | |

|

| | Paypal Rewards | 15%** variable |

So while the prices for the devices are not at historical lows, if you use a combination of coupon codes and cashback, you can get some pretty sweet deals right now such as the v10 for $21 or the RG35XXSP for $40 before cashback.
