I'm really looking for what may have been the driving motivation and reward. The focus is on your personal drive for the interest and what you gained from it.

We can't have meaningful conversations if people are scared to be honest, so please be authentic, forthcoming, and respectful. Conversely, please respond to others with compassion so that users feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

I had dealt with users on the other social media services and I always learn new stuff from interacting with people outside Lemmy.

On Lemmy, I really can't believe what I am dealing with here.

I started using Lemmy expecting to see people with the same intelligence as Reddit or more (due to the subjective complexity of registration).

I feel that in Lemmy I am in the social media pool of edgy teenagers who can't read.

Why is that?

Hello fellow lemmings!

Cross posted.

I am in need of some advice on how to expand my workstation.

I currently have 2 monitors and 2 laptops with 1 docking station that I switch back and forth between (I do have a second Bluetooth mouse that I connect to the laptop that is not currently connected to the docking station, if I need to).

I would like to have 4 monitors by the upcoming tax season. Also, I would like the option to expand to a total of 3 laptops within a couple years.

I have looked into KVM switches and the only one that I can find for 4 monitors and 2 computers is upwards of $800. Is there a KVM switch out there for 4 monitors and 3 computers, or is this just a pipedream?

What other solutions should I consider? When I expand to 3 computers in the upcoming years, would having 2 workstations be cheaper/more efficient?

People are watching less and less Television. Is it possible that streaming TV may be so desperate they pay for a viewing TV along with their services in say 20 years or even sooner?

I had met people who have a complete knowledge of the generic medicines, yet they still choose the brand without giving any reason.

Why are they doing that?

I personally don't think it matters much at all, except in channels that specifically identify that way. However, I am male, hetero, cis, so its possible I'm just clueless.

I'd like to do a series on 56 different emotions which we'll eventually get through as time permits.

Anger

Anger is an intense emotion defined as a perceived provocation, the invasion of one's boundaries, or a threat. From an evolutionary standpoint, anger serves to mobilize psychological resources in order to address the threat/invasion. Anger is directed at an individual of equal status.

Try to keep it fresh by what is current but its also cool to retrospect

For an example: I had an issue with always being in a food-scarce state, where I basically needed to hit the grocery store everyday buying overpriced under-portioned stuff and spending a fortune to have basically nothing in the cupboards and fridge or being depressed I had no supplies and just ordering food.

I broke down and decided I needed to get and start using my Costco membership and that I could have whatever I wanted as long as I put every item down in a spreadsheet type doc and came up with a rough estimate for how many of each I needed each month and factored tax i to the multiplyer so I could adjust and always have the total cost for everything that would be my groceries.

But I took it even further and now every subscription, bill, discretionary and vices, and more expensive longer-term items all get roughly budgeted for based on their lifecycle. So an annual subscription I anticipate keeping gets saved for out of each paycheck, something that lasts 2 months gets amortized over 4 paychecks generally.

Everything is overbudgeted and real liberal so even if I don't have that expense that month or ever and its out of date, I still end up benefitting by saving for it and now I anticipate slowly transitioning all my monthly subs I cant yet afford annual and paying more for towards once a year with a discount and it not littering my records with the need for monthly entries.

Now all my accounts except savings $0 out at the end exactly each month so it will be immediately obvious what the surplus is and what I am able to save, and also leverage that towards further optimizations as the opportunity arises.

Its like a complete paradigm shift for me and I think I've stumbled on to my new groove haha. Its also forced me to be realistic and realize I can't save money when I'm not planning for the actual human needs and factors involved. Savings cannot be an the expense of my physical and material well-being, I will not tolerate that long term without sabatoging myself

[Knock-on benefits]

  • budget for expensive bag of catfood per month and cat litter but won't go through nearly that much so that can become an adhoc cat medical insurance/vet visit/medical and supply fund + my emergency medical fund 😅
  • can subtly tweak the quantities to allow accumulation of supplies without severe effect or detriment of the general budget. It will almost certainly be covered by other items not requiring replenishment
  • since larger over-time expenses rarely overlap, can use the savings to apply to pressing needs or unexpected emergencies without ever really having an impact since they will have been covered several times over by redundancies created by savings for other expenses that are similarly ongoing

I saw that other post about worst dates and honestly can't relate since I've never dated anyone, I just wanted to know if I was the only one here. That's it, you don't have to go deeper if you don't want to

Apple, Valve, Kagi, GitHub, Mozilla, 404 Media, etc..

Why are people willing to sell their kids to defend the above companies?

There's a cat that has been loose on my street since May apparently, but only came into my yard Thursday night. I tried to catch it, but it bit me and ran away. Someone has also shaved it for some reason, and I want to catch since it's getting colder in the evenings. I saw the cat last night too was and was friendly to me, but it had a bit of a cough, so I'm worried. Didn't see it tonight, and it's really cold and windy.

A couple of my neighbours have been feeding it, but no real effort in trying to trap it or check to see if it's microchipped. I want to take it to the vet and see if it has an owner/check for diseases. Apparently the cat likes dry food over wet, so I don't think leaving cans of wet food will work.

Any advice given from experienced pet owners/ trappers would be helpful.

Please rate the idea from zero to ten!

Overall, I think it’s a great idea for 100 students to find more study partners and friends among themselves.

Mine would be the time my dad rigged a harness and "hung" himself from the carport beam, dressed to look like a stuffed Halloween decoration. He would grab at the bigger kids and parents when they came up to the door for candy. Scared the living bejeezus out of them.

I was thinking about it. I donate to quite a few charities, but they specifically mean something to me. Others I don't really think about, though they're good. I guess we all have a threshold or we'd be broke and for many that could be no donations at all or just a fiver the the street guy.

I’ve been asked to coordinate a “boule” (similar to bocce) tournament for a relatives wedding as a fun thing to do for those coming a few days early (destination wedding).

After doing a little research, I’ve found there are a lot of variations of this game so I’m curious if any of you play this and what your recommendations are for a simple version of this game. There will be people from Europe, US, and Canada at the wedding so I want to make sure it is easy to understand and explain to everyone.

This ability of the sorcerer will wipe any one song of your choosing from the pages of history, as if it never existed! Gone from our reality. They were going to do it anyway, but they're making you choose.

Which song would you pick?

(If you really can't narrow it down to one, then try narrowing to three)
