And if so how can we enable it as the "search files and folders" options is no longer available?

I know we can go back to the old menu with this classic menu applet but i wanted to avoid that.

I started a dual-boot install at the end of the day, and now I'm in trouble and too tired to think right. After a basic default install,it only boots to mint now. No dual boot. I'm going to sleep now, but any pointers you can offer will give me a jump on my day tomorrow. Thanks.

I am trying to use a Thermaltake Blacx Duet (ST0015) HDD Docking Station with my Linux computers (Linux Mint and Ubuntu, all latest).

I have a SATA disk plugged in one of the bays and when I connect it to a USB port with its cable (everything is brand new) nothing happens.

lsusb returns:

The only message in dmesgrelated to usb is:

which I understand means that the usb-storage module is loaded.

Same behavior in Ubuntu.

Does this mean that the hardware is just incompatible or is there anything more I can try?

I installed Mint on a friend’s computer and he asked if there was something similar to Quickbooks. I have never thought about it so I don’t know what to recommend.

I'm on LMDE 7 Gigi and use standard Firefox that comes with Mint. Recently I installed Librewolf via Flatpak and wondered why all the touchpad gestures like 2-finger-swipe for back/forward and pinch-to-zoom worked out of the box in Librewolf. When I looked that up it seemed that this only works with Wayland but not on X11. I guess this comes down to the installation via Flatpak?

Is there a way to get these gestures on Firefox under Mint? Or do I have to wait for Wayland support? I'd just use Librewolf with the gestures working but unfortunately I couldn't get my KeePassXC data bank synced. This might be because of Flatpak, I tried to manually set the sync folder but KeePass couldn't find a connection there.

Thanks!

I have used linux mint for a while but I decided to try manjaro on my pc for about 6 months, when I swapped back I got it on and stable for just long enough to move some of my files over and install csgo but when I tried to launch it the computer froze and after like 5-10 minutes I shut it down then it threw this error code that I had not seen before even when running the same system on the same os

It was fully up to date because I fixed that before I installed anything

As of now it puts up that code looks to me like(ucsi_ccg 0-0008: Failed to get FW build) to me but the only place I can find reference to that is a nixos forum post from 2 years ago saying it is a driver used in laptops for usb-c

But it throws that code then black screens and goes unresponsive either when I try and boot to the main HDD or when I try and boot to an external USB stick so I can't gain any access to the software to disable the package

I tried checking my BIOS settings and pulling the bios battery already and neither made any change

to ~/.XCompose, has anyone already done this for all 256 characters in the Unicode block? And if so, could i get a copy of that?

Or can anyone think of a good way to automate this? I tried generating this line for 1-255 in LibreOffice Calc then removing the lines containing 0 and 9, before i realized i hadn't covered everything and i had a bunch of effectively duplicate lines because i need 12 and 21 to count the same.

I know it's possible because i did it a couple weeks ago, then something broke and i had to reinstall Mint. Unfortunately i didn't document what i did and i'm struggling to find anything about it online, just one thread on the Mint forums that turned into an argument with no solution, and another that had a solution ten years ago for Cinnamon.

When i open the menu with the super (or Windows) key and type something that's not the name of a program in the menu, it offers to search DuckDuckGo, search Wikipedia, search a dictionary, and search for files that match what i typed. I'd like to remove the DDG and WP search options since i never use them.

I'm using Mint MATE 22.2, though i don't know how much that matters.

A game i play, Terraria, tends to work fine for a while then freeze for anywhere from a few seconds to until i force my computer to restart. I'd like to know why it does this and how i can fix it. I figure a good start is running the game from the terminal and recording that terminal's output.

Just saving the output to a file manually isn't an option because when the problems start my computer is frozen. What i need is some way to make it write the output to a file as the program runs, and save that regularly so i still have most of it even if my computer crashes.

Is there something i can append to any command to do this, or maybe some other command that enables logging? I'm using MATE 22.2, if that helps.

Adding >>log.txt 2>>error.txt to the end of the command works. File names are arbitrary, but the error log is specified by 2>> instead of just >>. Thanks everyone.

By this I mean the psensor applet icon (second from the left) being to big.

I was messing arround trying to customize my desktop and i followed a guide on how to install and setup latte-dock (kde). Long story short, i failed removed latte (although I think it may have left some stuff behind) and when I restored my cinnamon panel the icon was like this. I've already restored the system with timeshift but it made no difference and tried to set "symbolic icon size" in panel settings but it completely ignores it. I googled for a solution but cant find any :c

Any ideas?

P.S. If I set panel height too small, all the applet icons go halfway off screen through the bottom, something they didnt used to do.

SOLVED: Using this comand:

gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon

Reverts the icons to their normal behaviour. Thanks to potatoguy ^.^

What a cool thing you guys have going here!

I am on my second day of using this operating system and while I still feel kind of like I'm a toddler walking around with a loaded gun, in that I am as ignorant as I am dangerous (to myself at least), I'm starting to look into some of the neat things you can do and I'm quite impressed!

I just wanted to make a positive post of appreciation as a newcomer to the OS!

Hi, everyone. I have just finished building a computer and wanted to put Linux Mint on it.

The parts list is as follows: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Motherboard: MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard Memory: Crucial Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6400 CL38 Memory 2 TB NVME SSD

I followed the install guide and got it to boot once from a USB. Then, once it was hooked into the internet, it started putting in the codecs. As expected. When I tried to push the Linux install onto the SSD (which has nothing on it) it hung up and the computer shut down.

Now when I try to boot from the same USB I can't even get into the live session that I had been in before.

I get the following error: import mok state not found error

Apologies for the poor picture quality as it has to be extracted from a video that I took of it happening. This error shows for an instant and then the computer shuts down.

I have disabled secure boot and tried again, same thing. I have flashed the install USB stick again after verifying the checksum, same thing. I have made a bootable USB with differing programs (Rufus and Etcher) and it happens again.

I have gone through some forum posts and seen people talking about trickery which I don't understand involving changing filenames vis the bios and such, but when I try to navigate the USB stick on my laptop (running W10) I cannot find the files they are talking about to even rename them.

I apologise for being the newbie who rushes in with a question, but I did try to look up solutions, and can't seem to do them on my own.

For those who said they went into advanced boot options and made the boot point to a particular file in their motherboard's bios, Click UEFI (the bios for my particular motherboard) does not seem to have this as an option.

I am at a bit of a loss. Any help would be appreciated dearly!

Thank you in advance.

I apologize for leaving the thread unanswered for a bit even though you were quick with helpful responses. I was hacking away at other solutions (in the sense of "madly trying everything" as I certainly haven't the technical knowhow to do any real hacking) and came upon this thread.

In case the thread dies in the future and some searcher finds this: What I had to do was change grubx64.efi's filename to "mmx64.efi", and off we went. Disabling secure boot probably helped also but that had already been set several attempts ago.

I had been busy with trying it, without much hope, but it worked.

I am now using the machine to write this very edit! I will leave the above as is in case others need the information.

I just bought a 4k tv for the first time, and I want to use my old Inspiron 5577 with a GTX 1050 as a media PC for it.

But, the laptop defaults to the igpu, which only gives me a max of 24 (laggy) fps at 4k, and I can't figure out any way to make the laptop use the dgpu instead. I can run individual programs with the dgpu, but not the screen itself.

I've tried the Nvidia settings, and I've also tried "sudo prime-select nvidia", which completes and then doesn't do anything when I reboot.

I've checked, and my bios doesn't have an option to run the dgpu only.

I've also tried KDE Neon to see if it was just Cinnamon, but I got the same issue on KDE.

Am I just SOL? I really don't want to have to buy a new media PC when I literally have a graphics card in my laptop that can do exactly what I want already.

Edit: Yup, looks like I'm fucked, lol. Seems like the igpu is directly wired to the hdmi port with no dpgu passthrough. Maybe I can snag a Windows 10 PC for cheap.

Hello! Linux aficionado here, not an expert, first time on Mint; is there any way to have the bluetooth icon at the bottom right of the panel not show up on boot? I can close it as expected, but it always shows up when rebooting, and I'd just like to clean up that corner as I don't usually use bt on this laptop. Thanks in advance for any answer :)

I want to use the Shift key for a different window snapping tool, so this behaviour annoys me. I can't find any setting or documentation for this, nor is it listed on any keybind list.

Tested on a fresh install. Linux Mint 22.2 Cinnamon Cinnamon Version 6.4.8

The extension for fancy window snapping: https://github.com/BasGeertsema/fancytiles

It's a perfect alternative to FancyZones on Windows and works well when set to a different keybind.

Hello everyone,

I’ve only been using Mint for a short time, and ever since I enabled the Menu button applet on the taskbars of my 4 screens… its behavior has been pretty chaotic. Coming from Windows, I like to keep the environment as close as possible to what I’ve been used to for years. I discovered that thanks to the Applets tool (by right‑clicking on the system taskbar), you get access to a ton of customizable options for each taskbar.

What I wanted was to have the Menu button at the bottom left of each screen, so that no matter which screen I’m working on, I could quickly access it with a single click, instead of having to go back to the main screen.

However, now that I’ve set up this functionality, when I press the Windows key (which opens the Menu dropdown), it pops up randomly on any of the 4 screens. It changes every day, but it never shows up on the main screen. How can I fix this?

I’ll leave my system specs in a spoiler below:

Will be brief, her laptop is EOL with windows 10 being discontinued. I have an old laptop laying around that I could repurpose for her. If I reimage with Windows 11 she would be familiar and her son who lives nearby could give her assistance from time to time but I have to install by creating a custom image via Rufus as the hardware of my laptop is not supposed to run Win11. If one day Micro$oft decides to drop unsupported devices she will be back with an unusable computer.

I could install Mint and she will likely be ok but I will be in charge of IT support if something goes sideways. She only needs OnlyOffice and an app to read and edit pdfs.

The reason I am posting here is to ask: how often did you had to help a family member with Mint? On my computers I never had issues as it pretty much is set and forget but I am far from the standard user. Can you share something that happened with you?

If I manage to get her on Mint she will pretty much be able to use that laptop up until the moment the machine will stop working or if she decides to get a new one. With windows she will be able to use it up until the vendor will decide otherwise.

And, last one, assuming I set Mint for her and considering I want to have near 0 chances to be called for issues, shall I go for LMDE or the standard edition?

Going to work now but will respond once I get back home

So I've decided to get a Framework 12 knowing that I wanna try a proper start into Linux. My Previous attempt with Kubuntu went rather Badly, tho more because of the Garbage Laptop I got new for it which broke apart at every seem. Its also been 5 years since then.

So I've decided to go with Linux Mint, the Cinnamon Flavour! Something about the UI, Software Package Tailor made for me and that Linux Mint supposedly is Community Supported on the FW12 made me choose it. As I await the Laptop, I've been reading into it and there seem a few worries?

A Forum Post around April detailed that Tablet mode just doesnt work on it, is that still true?

Then there is the Framework/Community Guide on how to Instal and set it up properly... with the most Horrible German Translation I've ever read (Can't seem to turn it off either)

There is also very few Posts on Folks experience with it on the FW12. Do any of you Run Linux Mint on the FW12? If so what it been like for you?

Some programs like AntiMicroX and Steam Input can change controller inputs without sudo access, but programs like Kanata and Input Remapper do the same thing to keyboard inputs and need sudo or to be set up so they always run with more permissions than most programs. Why is that? Is it just about controller inputs being less important than keyboard inputs?
