Hi, is there any reason all my lemmy.ml subscriptions are pending (and have been for last couple of days)?

We're seeing increased rates of memory errors in postgres, due to a default docker setting

I will be performing a fix at 23:45 UTC. This should not update the server, so it should be a very fast fix. I expect the downtime to be less than a minute.

If youre a mod for a community I also recommend setting up a group chat for all of the mods in your community so you can chat between yourselves easily (theres a dm feature built into lemmy but as far as I know its just for two people). Ive been setting up mine on matrix but you can chat to see what you prefer

I'm new to Lemmy and decided to join this instance as /r/programming was one of the big reasons I joined reddit in the first place. Excited to be here, but I have a question on how do you create new communities? In some other instances I see that there is a button at the top called "Create communities" is it because my account isn't fully validated yet? Do I need my email assigned first?

depending on what page you are clicking it from because programming.dev is interpreted as a relative url.

I discovered programming.dev after I registered at Lemmy.world, and wanted to see how well federation works.

I looked through your list of communities, I think !meta@programming.dev is the best place for this test post, but I apologize if there's a better place for this that I didn't see.

That being said, I might as well ask a question as part of this test-post / cross instance test discussion!

With different communities having different signup policies(ex: Beehaw.org vs Lemmy.world) and the threat of defederation existing... how does programming.dev plan to deal with problematic servers?

I'm a pessimist. I feel like inevitably, some kind of flamewar or drama will cause cross-board invasions between subreddits (and now, different !communities@different.servers on Lemmy).

I don't think anyone knows the answer, but I guess I wanted to muse upon something to make this post more substantial than just a test post. Thanks for having me!

Hi! Are there any criteria in place as to how this instance and its accounts federate with others? For instance, there are a few communities on feddit.de which I'd like to subscribe to, but they are not listed here, am I doing something wrong?

At 6:49 Denver/America time today I migrated the DNS nameservers to Cloudflare. This propogated quickly, but inadvertently I had set the SSL/TLS Encryption mode to Flexible, which resulted in Cloudflare attempting to encrypt traffic between itself and the server. But programming.dev already has its own certificate. Cloudflare expects http traffic to come from the origin server, not https, so when it received https it simply tried over and over again, resulting in failure to connect.

Switching the SSL/TLS setting to Full (Strict) fixed the issue. Sorry about that everyone! I'll try to not break stuff that badly in the future.

Thank you for joining me here! It's great to see that we have a community that wants to grow in such a new and exciting manner.

As it is, I thought it would be a lot easier to do this by myself than it has been. So I'm asking for some help!

I have several things I need assistance with:

• setting up and moderating a chat community, for those times when users are having issues with the website. I think it's up to the community what software we use, but I would probably prefer Discord. Since this is all federation though I completely understand if others want to use something like Zulip or Matrix! So let's just use what everyone wants. If you have an opinion please post below.
• database stuff. I'm absolutely terrible at database stuff, and that is not an exaggeration. If anyone is willing to help it would be much appreciated. Currently I have a need to set up pgbouncer, or we should modify the lemmy source to allow for setting up a bouncer. I also want to set up read replicas so that we can distribute the load a bit more evenly. As it currently is, the site was simply set up with the lemmy-ansible script, so everything is running on a single box 😬. If you know Rust and want to help modify the Lemmy source code for this, or you are a Database Admin and want to help, I'd very much appreciate it.
• instance admins. I cannot be online constantly and I do have a day job. I'm getting messages and applications to join the instance along with needing to set up new communities, create and update rules, moderate, etc. I cannot handle this all alone.
• I also need some general help.
  • email admin
  • migration of server to larger VPS (will have to bring the entire site down for this, unless someone wants to help set up a load balancer, a brand new box, and have some sort of migration strategy.)

If you want to help out on the server side of things I will want to know your real life persona, but for instance admins, chat mods, etc. I would just like to see some sort of comment history from you elsewhere.

When I first saw this community I though it was related to Facebook and completely ignored it. Did anyone else do the same, and is there a way to make it more clear to new users and or is there currently something in place that I just completely missed that points it out?

I was wondering how resource intensive is it to run this server? I hope the reddit refugees won't put a big hole in your hosting bill.

Others like me could also host a server, if there is tremendous load on this one.

I'm trying to get the instance to run better, so I just adjusted the database pooling to hopefully make things run more stable. Let me know if it made stuff worse 😂

For mod creation I need both the url style name (experienced_devs) and the Display name (Experienced Devs)

The sidebar states "Please see the request thread to request more communities" but I'm not seeing such a thread.

Not sure if this is the best place to post, but I'm trying to figure Lemmy out. Suppose I want to subscribe to !news@beehaw.org using this account.... how do I do that?

When I go to the "communities" tab and search for "news"... doesn't show up there. I can search for "technology" and find results for !technology@beehaw.org. I can go to a URL on this domain for that community; but plopping the word "news" instead of "technology" in that URL gives me a 404.

Do the admins of this instance have to whitelist specific other communities before people here can subscribe to them? Have they done that with "technology" but not "news"? (I understand if that's the case. Probably want to keep programmers.dev on topic. Just trying to figure out how lemmy works)
