UPDATE: Thank you all so much! Didn’t expect to get so many replies in such a sort amount of time. They talked to the venue this morning and they were so apologetic and compassionate. They have given them another contact who has given them a great price and is going to try and work with the old caterer to get servingware etc. I’ll keep you updated on whether they get their money back 🤞🏼

OG POST: My younger brother is getting married this weekend and the caterer called last night to pull out and will “do his best to get their money back to them.”

Not only are they now left out of pocket they have a week to organise catering for 120 people.

The caterers were also supplying all the serving ware and we’re going to do a platter after the ceremony.

Has anyone had an experience like this before and can help them recoup some of their money?

Anyone had to last minute find someone to cater for over 120 people?

The wedding is being held in Clevedon (South East Auckland) if anyone has any contacts they could recommend.

Note - the caterer was from a list recommended by the venue.

I haven't lived in nz a few years now and this topic came up with my mum. One random thing I hated as it financially crippled me at the time was when it was my bday and having to shout others beer or lunch. Living overseas it's been the opposite, the group pays for you on your bday Am I right that in Nz you shout when it's your bday? Or it's changed now? Or a Southern thing from where I'm from...

I’m 37f, married with 2 older kids. The highlight of one of my kids weekend was buying $10 robux. The first time we’ve ever let him spend ‘his pocket money’ on gaming stuff. We own our home, I have no friends and no social life, me and my partner work our arses off and bring in decent salaries $200k combined. We have a maxed out credit card and $800 savings. Tried selling our house to lessen our mortgage but it’s not selling at what we need. Partner has some good friends so he’s ok. Our weekends consist of life admin and then tech time. We aren’t struggling but there’s no living going on and I’ve just realised how depressing and how boring my kids lives must be compared to their friends. I hope it’s just a season and we can improve somehow but man. Anxious and depressed and lost. I hope this is a throwaway/untraceable account lol.

I’m 44, professional, on good pay. But have never had a job I’ve found the least bit enjoyable (aside from nice people). So, those who enjoy their work, what do you do?

Edit: thank you to everyone for your genuine answers. I’m envious of all of you.

Life is so hard at the moment. I know I am not the only one especially in Wellington at the moment.

Recently I have been suffering more and more from depression and anxiety. While my job is not difficult, I get to hear a lot of stories from people, their health both physical and mental. A week and a half ago I finished work and as I was driving past the hospital and almost turned in and presented to ED. I proceeded home and rang a sister in Auckland who after a brief conversation said, 'You need to get down to ED ASAP'.

I went down to the hospital and was discharged that night after they made contact with the Crisis Resolution Team (CRS). 4 days later I was seen at the hospital by the CRS team who could see I was in distress and suffering from severe depression, anxiety and very dark thoughts.

My GP has now put me on the sickness benefit and has essentially said that I will need to give up the work I have been doing as being an extremely empathetic person my job was not healthy for me. I have been placed on medication, an atypical antidepressant, I am confident I can pick up a couple of days work on a limited hourly rate elsewhere as I have done previously.

I am high functioning but being in my 50's finding a fulfilling occupation has been extremely difficult. I am now given my circumstances having to access some of my kiwisaver due to Significant Financial Hardship. Another hard and stressful thing considering my current mental state.

My closest friends are scattered throughout the country and have been wonderful. A couple of them are coming to help me to pack up my stuff as I have to be out of the place I am living on October 4th. This is another issue now that I am going to have to find another place to live with now limited income. I suspect most of my contents will need to go into secure storage.

I would like to have a place I could live in private as I have my 11 year old son 2 nights a week and he is such a sweet and dear boy but the likely reality is I am going to have to find a place with others who accept a 'Mature' person and my son for the 2 nights I have him. He is and has been my rock.

As I am dealing with the depression and anxiety even going out in public let alone going and seeing places to live or shared accommodation is impossible due to my fragile state, which is not normally in my nature as I am usually an outgoing extrovert. A social worker is meant to be trying to solve this housing conundrum for me but communication is limited.

$15 for an Anko tshirt, the absolute state of what op-shops are now. It would be cheaper to buy it new from Kmart. Op shops used to be for those who can't afford to buy new, for the bargan hunters, how can this be profitable.

A few glum posts on here have convinced me to try to inspire a little confidence and maybe motivate one or two others to get involved with helping shape New Zealand's economic future.

New Zealand doesn't need to look for a unique opportunity to save our economic future, we just need to position ourselves well in the global capital investment boom taking place right now, the largest in human history.

What is this opportunity literally staring you in the face? The combination of computing power and energy running the device you're using to read this.

These are the core inputs that will fuel the vast majority of future economic growth around the world. New Zealand should strive to become a magnet for investment into new computing capacity (i.e. data centers), thereby also stimulating huge demand for new renewable electricity generation (i.e. massive offshore wind farms).

We should consider what regulatory changes and/or incentives may be necessary to accelerate this investment.

Computing capacity will be the most important enabler of economic growth for the next 50+ years, just like energy has been the most important enabler of economic growth since the industrial revolution.

The more computing capacity a country has, the more wealth there will be.

Unfortunately for those involved in building the massive new data centers - predominately the big five tech companies throwing hundreds of billions at this - there is a real risk that emissions are going to increase unless they find renewable electricity sources to rely upon. These companies are all signed up to climate targets that will force them into investments that avoid higher emissions wherever possible.

Just yesterday, we saw Microsoft enter an agreement to restart a nuclear reactor at the site of the worst nuclear disaster in US history to support growth for their AI computing capacity. And a week ago there were reports of two proposals to build data centers in the US worth more than $100B USD, each likely to require electricity capacity equivalent to New Zealand's entire existing capacity.

Fortunately for New Zealand, we have an abundance of renewable energy resources that we can tap into. And, even better, politicians from all stripes generally agree that accelerating the build of new renewable electricity generation is a good thing.

Best of all? Stimulating a massive renewable generation construction campaign will drive down electricity prices for everyone...

Oh wait. Here's the catch.

We have an electricity market that is dominated by several players who aren't leaning into the upside of lower energy prices for NZ Inc.

They behave like traditional utilities in a mature market with margins to protect. This shouldn't be surprising given the returns that have been available and ultimately, they believe they're just acting in the best interests of their shareholders.

That's a problem for the rest of us though, and for attracting meaningful investment into new computing capacity.

If the electricity prices were heading in a consistently downward trend, we might generate a bit of interest. But based on what we've seen recently, there's not really any reason to be optimistic that New Zealand will see an influx of investment unless something changes. On top of that, we're facing competition from every other country, and those with existing wealth will be moving to make themselves as attractive as possible for this new investment.

So we should consider what regulatory changes and/or incentives might position us best in this competition and we should start by focusing on the electricity market.

TLDR: There's a giant wave of investment going into data centers, so we should find ways to attract this to New Zealand, particularly through solving the lack of competition in the wholesale electricity market.

I've been thinking, what's the point of our existence? We struggle so hard just to survive, but is that really living? Money, which we created, only separates us into haves and have-nots. If we just focused on having enough food and basic needs, life would be simpler. We chase wealth and possessions, but they don't truly bring happiness. I wish we could live in a world where everyone's basic needs are met and we prioritize happiness, equality and well-being over wealth and status.
