The options I've seen so far

• Immich: great if you can self-host, but I prefer not to, so that's out for me
• Nextcloud on a VPS (Hetzner or others): you need E2EE to prevent the providers from seeing your photos, but then all the apps like Memories etc don't work ( https://help.nextcloud.com/t/end-to-end-encryption-nextcloud/237705/3 )
• Ente: has E2EE embedded, the face recognition happens on the clients. Can be self-hostable, so that gives more trust that other providers can launch their own European instances in the future.
• https://zeitkapsl.eu/en/ : has E2EE, but no self hostable option, so you kind of have to trust them that they implement their design (which is actually kind of nice: https://zeitkapsl.eu/en/e2ee-architecture/ . They have a security audit on their roadmap (announced 8 days ago: https://zeitkapsl.featurebase.app/en/p/formal-security-audit )

Any option I am missing?

Will the age verification era kill anonymity? More countries are passing age verification laws, now also for social media apps as seen in Australia and upcoming in the UK, France, Spain, and Turkey. So let's take a look at what countries already require it, and for what services, online sites,and social media platforms.

In data privacy, we often talk about the dangers of data collection and exposed data. It can get overwhelming to learn more about all the information that is collected on us, especially at the beginning. As a coping mechanism, some people react by downplaying concerns, disregarding dangers, and ignoring precautions altogether. Others react the opposite way: by isolating themselves, and no longer sharing anything with anyone. But neither is a viable solution.

Staying isolated to avoid all data exposure risks other dangers. Dangers that might not seem related to data privacy directly, but are nevertheless worth mentioning here: Suicide and depression are very real dangers that we cannot ignore.

Keeping our data safe shouldn't mean staying alone, and isolation is especially dangerous for LGBTQ+ people.

The better approach is to adopt a segmental perspective on data privacy.

While not ignoring nor minimizing the risks, it's important to develop an awareness of which exposed data represents the biggest danger to us, which we have no control over, and which we can actually protect better.

This is the balanced way out of this Orwellian nightmare.

There are ways to stay together, to support each other, and to stay connected while also protecting our data and becoming an informed advocate for privacy rights.

What is Snowflake?

Snowflake allows you to connect to the Tor network in places where Tor is blocked by routing your connection through volunteer proxies located in uncensored countries.

Similar to VPNs, which help users bypass Internet censorship, Snowflake disguises your Internet activity as though you’re making a video or voice call, making you less detectable to Internet censors.

How can I help?

You can set up a standalone proxy on your Server or, if you don't feel for the hustle, you can install Tors Browser extension and just keep your Tab open.

You can even help with just your phone! Install Orbot (iOS/Android) and enable Kindness mode.
