The European Parliament has failed to stop platforms from scanning private messages for child abuse material until 2028 after a motion to reject the rules fell short of the 361 votes required.

The EU’s Chat Control message-scanning regime will continue despite the fact that most lawmakers who cast a ballot want the rules gone.

Former MEP and Pirate Party privacy campaigner Patrick Breyer, revealed that during the recent European Parliament vote, 314 members voted against the EU’s chat control rules while 276 backed it.

There were 17 abstentions, and because rejecting the measure needed an absolute majority of the full chamber rather than a simple majority of those present, the 314 opposing votes were not enough.

A separate amendment to limit message scanning to suspects flagged by courts also drew more support than opposition, 322 to 255, and similarly the majority lost.

Due to the outcome of the vote, “Chat Control 1.0,” which was temporarily paused after EU institutions could not agree to extend it, will now be revived[...]

TOKYO - Japan's parliament on Friday enacted a revised personal data protection law to enable companies to use sensitive information without consent as the country pushes for domestic artificial intelligence.

Information collected via social media and other platforms for purposes such as AI and statistical analysis can include race, personal beliefs, and medical and criminal histories but should not identify individuals.

According to Japanese news reports, this personal information can also be handled by sole proprietors and foreign companies "if certain conditions are met."

Furthermore, anonymization is not required, and it is possible to link the information, including medical history.

When providing data to external parties, providers are not required to anonymize the names contained within the data. Because overseas companies and sole proprietors can also receive data if certain conditions are met, it has been pointed out that measures against data leaks and misuse are insufficient. The government says it will prevent misuse through rules and guidelines that it will formulate in the future.

Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at NetNut, a botnet claimed by Google and the Feds to be sitting inside the homes of users of cheap Android TV boxes running malware without their knowledge. This has been silently sitting in homes for two years and 7/2it got exposed and shut down by the cops.

Under Privacy Settings, there are options for Device Usage Data, Collect App and Over-the-Air Usage, and Interest-Based Ads. All are enabled by default, but you can disable them. You must log in or # to comment.

If you're not familiar with the LEGO scandal, the tl;dw is that this YouTuber Reckless Ben (Ben Schneider) has been investigating a stolen set of LEGO worth ~$100-200k (depending on who you ask) and the local police dept and criminal justice system has been colluding with the criminals (all members of the local Mormon church) to get him to STFU. The long version is, very long. You can check his channel for more.

Previously the local police dept managed to get a warrant to raid Ben's rental home with guns drawn and arrest him, based on what is clearly fabricated evidence. Here they appear to have done it again to get access to his Google account.

Ben does also provide a copy of the subpoena in the video but I cannot vouch for its' validity, and he has used placeholder evidence before, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, the part that was relevant to this community was that in the course of their investigation they subpoenaed Google, and Google handed over basically his entire life to them. I'm sure this was very useful in their investigation.

I don't necessarily blame Google here for complying with a subpoena, but the moral of the story is to stop giving Google your data, because everything you say and do can and will be used against you in a court of law, with or without legitimate justification, and the more stuff you give them, the more ammunition you're providing the prosecutor.

This is also not exclusive to Google. Anything not local, self-hosted or encrypted a la Proton can be subpoenaed and the provider will have to comply. It just so happens that Google probably has more information about literally everyone in the world than any other particular entity

Starting July 7, 2026, every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera aimed at your face. Glance at your phone, your kids in the back seat, or the radio for too long, and the car will flash a warning light and sound an alert.

Automakers have known this was coming for years. What they, and EU regulators, have never spelled out is what happens to that footage after the alert goes off.

While the intention behind the new system is difficult to dispute, its implementation has raised several concerns. Early real-world testing suggests the distraction warnings can be overly sensitive and potentially distracting.

I just watched the EU parliament plenary and they just voted in favor of Chat Control. I can't understand what's going on in their head. The last speaker before the vote had very good points.
