FYI you can grab yourself a copy of UT99 off The Internet Archive and can play online on populated servers right now thanks to the OldUnreal developers! A 27 year old beloved game is still receiving updates to this day. Crazy. Links to get started are below!

Most notably, this Patch makes 64 bit available, higher fps especially on custom maps, and now the Vulcan renderer runs MUCH better now. Lots of unprecedented fixes and performance bugs have been fixed after decades. This is a HUGE update.

I have personally tested it compared to older patches and have noticed a huge difference to my fps in general.

Want to try UT 1999 out now? Here are the links to get started, its very easy to install. You just click "next" on the installers and you're good to go.

Hi everyone! Some of you were probably wondering why we've been so quiet in the past couple of months. Today, we can finally reveal (part of) the answer: we've been working on a new side project!

With Epic's blessing and with the help of some new team members, we are bringing Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) back. This means that we are going to publish an installer that downloads the original disc image for UT2004, installs the game, and applies patches to it. We are also going to start publishing patches that modernize the game, make it compatible with Windows Vista or later, Linux x86-64 and aarch64 (Raspberry Pi and similar), and Mac OS 10.9 or later, fix bugs, and implement quality-of-life changes.

Yes, you read that right. UT2004 will soon be available to download once again. Free of charge.

This is a community-run effort but we’re excited to make the game easier to access and play again.

We have been working on this for quite some time now and have made enough progress to start inviting the first batch of testers. Highlights so far include:

• We now natively support modern Linux and macOS systems with 64-bit Intel and ARM/Apple CPUs
• You can now play the game or run a server on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, albeit at a lower frame rate than on a PC!
• The Linux and macOS distributions of the patch now include a fully functional UCC with an UnrealScript compiler (UCC make) and texture compression support
• The Linux and macOS distributions now use SDL3 instead of SDL1
• D3D9Drv and fullscreen support are fully functional in the Windows 64-bit client
• We dealt our first (minor) blow to the editor goblin! We fixed several crash bugs, restored some broken functionality, and, most importantly, the editor will no longer freeze for several seconds when you click a viewport

Unreal Tournament, one of the most popular first person shooter deathmatch games ever released, is still well known for its soundtrack, consisting of high energy electronica, fast paced modern orchestra and and grinding guitars. Now the original composers return to score this remix album, putting a modern spin and new interpretation on this classic! If you've ever enjoyed a game of UT, you definitely should check out this reimagining of the music by Alexander Brandon, Michiel Van Den Bos, Peter Hajba, Andrew Sega and Dan Gardopée.

So, great news!

Not too long ago, the folks at OldUnreal announced in their Discord server that they got permission from Epic to distribute two particular links from archive.org to download Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament.

Now they've published installers for automating the installation process, as well as installing their patches on top of Unreal/UT.

The installers are available to download on the links down below:

Unreal Gold Installer: https://www.oldunreal.com/downloads/unreal/full-game-installers/

Unreal Tournament Installer: https://www.oldunreal.com/downloads/unrealtournament/full-game-installers/

These are Windows only, but Linux and macOS installers are also gonna be released sometime soon, it seems!

Enjoy!

Surreal Engine is an ongoing project to reimplement UE1, mainly focused on Unreal Tournament v436 and Unreal Gold v226 at the moment.

This one has been discussed in the other linux_gaming community before, more than two years ago. Since then there were numerous improvements:

• It can now run UT99 maps and Unreal Gold botmatch maps (whereas it was limited to only UT before), and boot up onto the intro flyby of Deus Ex.
• Colission handling is much better (but not perfect yet).
• Can utilize SDL2 on Linux for windowing and native Wayland support (previously it'd use pure X11, and actually still does if you don't have SDL2 installed).
• The menus mostly work now.
• Initial works for the AI (they will move around sometimes, and retaliate if attacked).
• Game detection system based on the SHA1 sum of the game executable. This allows us to detect many versions of UT and U1/UGold, as well as Deus Ex, Klingon Honor Guard, NERF Arena Blast, and more!
• A launcher has been added to select the game you want to play on startup. And lots of other improvements!

There is still a lot of work to do to implement everything though, and contributions are always welcome!

Samples from the original .umx (repacked Impulse Tracker module) files shipped with the GOG GOTY release were extracted using OpenMPT then rearranged, mixed and mastered in Studio One. No major arrangement or sample changes have been made in order to keep it close to the original, only more listenable in 2022.

improves UT99 a lot

I really wish there was a way to setup a new server system that allowed people to play it online again.
