This may be the wrong community to ask this question, but why the transition to bsd? Old linux is definitely bad, but i didnt see what necessitated the underlaying platform transition, which seems like it added additional hurdles?

Yes, migrating to FreeBSD isn't strictly needed. But we're moving towards it: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2022/01/24/why-were-migrating-many-of-our-servers-from-linux-to-freebsd/
