My first playthrough of factorio I watched a bunch of Nilaus's videos. I did manage to get through aquillo but sort of lost steam, and realized how much using pre-made blueprints and sticking to city blocks and busses sort of sapped the fun out of the game. With the 2.1 release, I decided to come back since interplanetary logistics seemed really interesting, with enough changes to things that I'd want to do all my own designs.

That said, I still like watching tutorials & especially speedruns or megabasers, as well as playing with friends of mine that have never watched a single video or interacted with the online factorio community. The bizzare spagetti & techiques they come up with are inspiring - one programmer friend of mine solves problems with as much circuit logic as possible & has built full on displays with gpus & bit encoding.

In particular I wanted to give a shoutout to https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFl3yXu7tHcH-um4yCq_cOq0ReC1pBaU7, who's put together a lovely, low stress and relatively unopinionated set of tutorials that helped me remember how to focus on the actual fundamentals of the game, break down problems, and avoid some pitfalls. In short, while I was already familiar with the game, I found these actually very encouraging to find my own playstyle, and I wanted to give them a mention.

I keep seeing a bunch of posts from people doing their own thing, like the recent spaceships - They're so different from anything I produce! I keep getting hung up on symmetry still. Those ships made me want to play with making something different! Just wanted to say to the community, keep doing your own thing - if it works, it works and if it's yours all the better!

Is there a mod that allows a 4 player game where each character starts simultaneously on each of the 4 inner planets? Since they are all self-starting it would be fun to have them race to space and help each other.

I sent my friend to Gleba and now I regret everything

For context: I had already given up on Gleba when I played it by myself.

So I told her that Gleba is not exactly an easy planet. She basically responded with, “It can’t be that bad.”

Naturally, I sent her there. With preparation, of course.

She then spent a while getting increasingly frustrated with YouTube tutorials because she had absolutely no idea where to even start.

I had apparently repressed the entire experience. Trauma response.

After every attempt at communication somehow turning into an argument, we eventually agreed to just let her figure it out herself.

Two hours later, I walked in and witnessed this.

I genuinely don’t know what to say anymore.

I’m not even angry.

I’m just standing here, staring at this incredible display of cruelty and wondering how we got here.

Do you hate routing circuits into each other? I do. Do you hate that every time you expand one of your circuit builds you have to reroute half your base? I do. Do you just want a build you can just copy over and over no matter what circuits you are running low on? I do.

The IDGAF productions systems proudly introduces it's first and latest creation the Circuitron 3000 A tilable circuit builder that builds all the circuits simultaneously so you never have to worry about using different BP-s for any one of them.

Does it use perfect ratios? No. I don't even know what it supposed to build at any moment, how am I supposed to optimise for ratios?

Is it a particularly efficient use of buildings? No. Do I care when all it uses are stuff I can make for free? (and calcite, technically) Also no. Is it an efficient use of modules? No. But it makes circuits. What do modules take? There you go. Is it good on Fulgora? Just use bots. It's Fulgora, that's the point.

Known bottlenecks:

  1. It's build with the experimental new feature, where you can chose the output side for inserters outputting on parallel belts, but i don't play on experimental, so you will have to add that in for yourself.
  2. Theoretically, on higher quality tiers, the inserter inputting the iron into the Gchip EMP can prove lacklustre, I never really dabbled withe quality. This could be counteracted with higher tier inserters, not sure if after upgrading the plants, the modules and the beacons that's gonna suffice. What you can do is use fewer lanes for GChip output, I honestly don't know how much GChip you need once you don't have to use them for other chips so I kinda eyeballed the three output lanes.
  3. The build is "optimised" for using these level of modules, and bildings, but it works pretty well with lvl2 prod modules the it gets somewhat iron plate starved. You can just slap on one extra pair of beacons
  4. The amount of molten copper and iron use depends the use of the outputs, I used this triple pump setup because it lets you build 40 row of this without issue and 40 almost nets you two full lanes of redchips which is what I always bottleneck myself on. If you need more fluid inupts just move the iron plate smelter to the right. Although at one point you will reach 46 width, at which point it will no longer fit into a standard roboport grid.

Constructive criticisms are always welcome, this build hasn't been tested in a real base.

Space Age surprised me (old.reddit.com)

I haven't quite beat space age yet but I have just gotten to Aquillo and got the basics set up so I have a pretty good idea how the rest of it is gonna go. Obligatory, this expansion was fantastic and had way more content than I thought it would but what really surprised me was how wrong I was about all the planets. Going in I had somewhat of an idea of what each of the planets were about and what ones I would probably enjoy but after playing I was wrong on every single one.

I would say my original order of planets based on how interesting/fun they looked from most to least was

  • Fulgora
  • Vulcanus
  • Aquillo
  • Gleba

This was based on some videos I watched and what people on the subreddit had to say about them. What I ended up with however is this order.

  • Gleba
  • Aquillo
  • Vulcanus
  • Fulgora

I will say the order I went was Vulcanus > Fulgora > Gleba, that might have influenced my choices here.

For Gleba, most of the discourse on the planet was either that it was really hard or the spoilage mechanic is painful to deal with. I however greatly enjoyed the spoilage mechanic paired with the infinite resources. The factories ended up feeling like an organism that needed antibodies to cleanse the system to keep the machines running. I have heard that people like to balance the inputs and the outputs so their is no leftovers to spoil but for me making a robust cleaning system and just sending saturated belts was my style! And resetting a broken factory felt like unclogging a drain!

Aquillo I cant say too much about it since Im only at making the science packs, but I love the atmosphere and the space logistics the planet demands. I am thinking about making a space station above to supply all the resources it can't produce, which is something I never felt like I needed on any other planet.

Vulcanus Im neutral on, I didn't dislike it but It was very easy. I will note when I play this again I am 100% mega basing here and I will prolly end up liking it alot more.

Fulgora I will just straight up say I have a skill issue here. I just don't enjoy the scrap mechanic very much and It took me until now to finally realise how it should work. I can see why this is peoples favorites and I think if I was better at the game I would like it more. For now it's just a pain in my ass.

I am curious to hear if anyone else found that what they thought they would enjoy from space age was different once you actually played on the planets!

My ship to take me to the solar system edge. I am so slow. I don't think I will ever get down to the 40 hour mark and that is ok. I might be able to do a rocket to space in 8 hours but its time to work on playing more with quality loops and a few achievements.

They are disgusting. All green and packed together like they are the shit. Who do they think they are? Ok they create oxygen and everything, but my factory doesn't grow from oxygen as far as I'm concerned.

Give me biters over those pieces of wood trash any day. At least when I destroy a biters' nest they are gone forever. Trees? They are everywhere and pollute the precious space I'll need to expand my factory.

You don't understand the pleasure I get from exterminating every single tree on the map. Grenades, fire, lasers, fucking nuclear bombs even, I love it. I even installed a mod to change the tree color to red and biters to green. Or maybe it's because I'm colorblind idk, but when I see a tree all I see is RED. KILL.

I actually spend more time killing trees than working on my factory but that's another problem. I have 500 hours in this game and a good half of it is spent taking those fuckers out from earth.

Biters aren't my enemies in this game. Trees are tho. Fuck trees.

I picked up Factorio properly a bit ago (played it non-legit a couple times before, decided to actually buy it to support the devs and get mods). I’ve restarted more times than I want to admit, and it’s always the same wall: oil.

By that point I’ve got iron, copper, steel, stone, stone brick, coal, and green circuits all automated. Then research needs red + green science and something in my brain refuses to build a “temporary” setup for it. So instead I sit there hand-crafting 200 of each science pack, because building something I know I’ll tear down later feels wrong.

On top of that, my brain goes into overdrive doing math I don’t need to be doing: worrying that if I tap too much off a belt, everything downstream starves, but I never actually know how much throughput I’m using vs how much is left on the belt. So instead of just building the next thing, I freeze up trying to calculate it in my head, and that alone is enough to make me stop expanding entirely.

I know “everything is spaghetti, everything is temporary” is basically a meme in this sub, but I want to hear it from people who’ve actually broken this habit: how did you get your brain to accept “good enough for now” instead of holding out for the perfect design and perfect math? Did something specific click, or did you just force yourself through it a few times until it stopped mattering?

The question previously asked is a decade old, so I want what you all think is a megabase now in 2026

My laptop has 4090 with 64 GB of RAM. I really want to build a megabase but I'm still at green science in my mega base journey.

So I'm curious what y'all think a megabase is and I might be able to architect my base based on that.
