What is it about queer comics that scares right-wing politicians so much? Conversely, what makes them such a powerful medium for queer and trans storytelling?

This week, Xtra launches Comics Against Censorship, a series of five brand-new original comics focused on themes of censorship against LGBTQ2S+ content. Comics Against Censorship is an Xtra editorial initiative dedicated to retired Pink Triangle Press board member Didier Pomerleau, who has long been a vocal advocate against censorship.

Like hellboy, preacher, saga, monstress, i hate fairyland, etc.

Still want fantasy, scifi, or supernatural elements to the story, just not superheroes.

I enjoy the more humorous comics from Ahoy like My Bad and The Wrong Earth.

Favorite evil superman take is Iredeemable from Boom.

Valiant 2012-2024 is my favorite superhero verse, I really enjoyed going through all of it.

Rick and morty comics from oni are surprisingly decent and do a great job filling the void when wanting more episodes.

Curious about what people like coming from mad cave, boom, dynamite, oni, ahoy, etc.

What is your favorite lesser known publisher? One that you think no one else here is aware of.

I recently stumbled across this while browsing my LCS for newer Sci-Fi series. The artwork is phenomenal, which makes up for the writing not always being my favorite.

This is the third week in a row where there are no new releases that I'm reading, but I'll post a link anyway.

Anything coming out you're interested in this week?

So this was actually a pulp magazine as I understand it, which ran concurrent with The Shadow comics, but each one of those was like a monthly novella, so to speak. In other words, few pictures, and mainly a little book. In magazine form!

Anyway, there's a boatload to say about The Shadow, originally created as a narration device for radio as I understand it, but in terms of superhero stuff? Basically a godfather of the bubbling cauldron of creativity, from which sprung a landslide of famous DC badasses. (correct me if I'm wrong, but Marvel's (mainly Stan Lee's) creation process started a couple decades later?)

Bloody hell... these covers are absolutely STUPENDOUS: (total index right here)

I'm not a big comic reader but every once in awhile, my best friend will show up with a comic he thinks I should read. He's never been wrong - last time it was Ultimate Martian Manhunter, this time it was The Sentry.

The only Marvel movie I've seen in the past decade is End Game so we both thought it was really funny that I caught this. He correctly calls him "Stephen" a few pages later.

As for the comic itself - it's an awesome self-contained story that unfolds very nicely. The artwork is amazing and diverse as you read through different hero's perspectives. I've never been a big Hulk fan but wow, his section was my favorite??

I really liked the timeframe, too. Something happens and something had to be done. But the comic isn't about the something...it's about the anticipation of doing it. Cool idea built on top of another cool idea with a really good conclusion.

!!SPOILER WARNING!!

Tap for spoilerFor the most part, I assumed The Sentry was a classic superhero I just wasn't familiar with. And ironically, the part that clued me in was knowing Bruce Banner did not 'get better' in a watchtower. But I still wasn't certain until the end.

Meanwhile, my friend went in knowing he wasn't real AND that every flashback story was fake but was still doubting himself by the end.

Comic Books

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.
