Suppose you boycott #Unilever because they fight cash as a member of Bill Gates’ “Better than Cash Alliance”. You could use the linked app on a flipper zero to change the price tags of Unilever goods to “Boycott Unilever”, for example.

The structure of modern society has allowed our community muscles to atrophy leaving us isolated and unsure where to start to make change.

Outsourcing Noticing. We are not acclimated to keeping an eye out for solvable issues in our area. We generally expect the city to notice and address issues (we pay them to, after all). Our role is to complain to the city if an issue gets too noticeable or annoying.

Outsourcing Problem Solving. We are not acclimated to noticing problems. We are also not acclimated to solving them. Solving problems usually includes knowing who has the right expertise, who has the right equipment, who has the right raw materials, transport vehicles, etc. When we outsource these functions to the city completely we do not need to know this information, so we typically lose the connections that would have been necessary to coordinate, or even imagine coordinating complex projects like water management, food management, or electrical grids.

This state of affairs is fine as long as the cities we have outsourced our knowledge to continue to function, but in order to build communities that are resilient to political upheaval I think we need to make a concerted effort to regain these lost skills. Teach your kids to notice problems and identify potential solutions. Try to understand where your water and electricity comes from, at least on a basic level. Get to know someone who works at the power plant. Find out who has what skills in your community, and think of what skills you might have to offer them. By practicing noticing and problem solving, we build strong community connections that better equip us to react to change safely and effectively.

My name is Mofeed, and I am a father from Gaza.

My family has been living through extremely difficult circumstances. Our home was destroyed, and we have been displaced. Every day is a struggle to provide food, water, medicine, and safety for my family.

I have a young child, my wife is pregnant, and my elderly mother depends on us. Despite everything, we continue to do our best to stay together and live with dignity.

I am sharing our story because I hope it reaches people who care. Even if you cannot help financially, sharing our story with others would mean a lot to us and could help us reach someone who can.

You don't need a reservation, you don't need to sign up, just find the address and head over. Be sure to bring some water and snacks, and try to talk with the people around you to make connections, exchange contact info (I recommend Delta Chat, which let's you instantly share or join an encrypted chat with a just a link or QR code).

There aren't many chances in the year to make connections with others with such a huge group of like-minded people, so make the most of it! Don't just match and chant, reach out to others and if they have a good vibe, talk to them about staying in touch and organizing together, perhaps by helping a local mutual aid group!

Idealist.org 'in person' initiative

Idealist is primarily a job/volunteer list but they have been working to find ways to encourage people to organize and get out and do meaningful in-person work together on days like 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, etc.

They have been organizing zoom calls to try to brainstorm how to encourage people to participate. You can read or watch the presentation for the general premise of the project at the linked site.
