G'day all. So on top of everything that's going on, a good friend of mine died yesterday. She'd had a lifelong battle with illness and it finally beat her. Yesterday was a day of tears, but today I just felt flat. The kids get it (mum's sad) and let me wallow in bed a bit more than usual. Watched a movie, not sure why, called Arrival (on Netflix). Mostly was pretty boring until the last half hour or so where it suddenly changed gear and was mind-blowing. Tonight I'm going to watch *3 body problem.*Now to make pizza and eat leftover pasta that I made into a bake.

[–] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 8 points 6 months ago

So hard to hear this news on top of everything else that's been happening for you. That flat feeling - know it all too well. It's not grief as such I think - more exhaustion of overstretched emotions that have just run out and stopped. Be kind to yourself. We are here in support.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

oh no, I'm so sorry. So many hugs.

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

So sorry to hear that.

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago

I'm sorry for your loss, sending you my love. I hope you feel better soon πŸ’œ

I'm so sorry you're going through such a hard time. Please do the best you can to give yourself some space to be at peace ❀️

[–] Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago

oh rough news.

Big hugs.

Got a note from someone around the corner. This is the second one now.

It reads:

"Dear xxx,

I've moved into xxx rd. Fran suggested you may have spare lemons Thanks, Caroline."

I have no idea who these people are...

Now this could turn into a mills & boon plot:

*It was cold, nearing sunset, the beach beckoned. With windswept hair and an unshaven jawline that could possibly cut ice, xxx decided to chance it. "Who is this mystery lady"? "Why do they all want my lemons"?

Questions that needed answers.

xxx carefully selects the best lemons, blemish free.. "what if she's the one" he wonders as he approaches.

He gets to the door.. heart racing.

Not a moment too soon the door swings open to reveal a scantily clad siren with perfect dimensions..

"uhh, hi, I heard you were after lemons" xxx awkwardly mutters, trying to maintain eye contact.

"oh is that for me" she says gently.

"uhh, yeah..." and before xxx could pull out the note the she puts her finger on her bottom lip, looking him up and down lowering her voice to a whisper..

"oh not the lemons..."

Realising what's happening, xxx drops the bag of lemons then spends 2 minutes picking them up.*

spoiler

Holy shit, the place I contacted to arrange a car booking as a hail mary came through and got us a vehicle at short notice, on a Sunday, less than 24 hrs from my email, for ALL 5 days of our stay - on an island (= few cars). And for a very typical price (~70 AUD/day including insurance and tax). With pickup and dropoff directly at our port of arrival!!!

I'd tried the car rental agencies directly and found nothing, so these guys must have some cars specially kept up their sleeves. Now the fact that my friends' accom and mine is spread apart is less of a problem, and we can be way more flexible about timings, especially with inclement weather and with not needing to rush hikes to meet bus timings. And it's cost effective too compared to daily bus trips for 3 people. What a huge, massive relief... I feel genuinely blessed. Much more enthusiastic about this part of the trip now.

Apparently there will be both pro Palestine and pro Israel rallies in the CBD today. This has the potential to end badly.

Alright I'm done. My brain is mush. For the IT initiated I can now create file shares for roaming user profiles and everything you need to be able to do before you get to that step. And also do moderate level GPO stuff. I can't wait to see what a normal companies OU looks like and how many GPO they have.

Before I started on Saturday, I knew pretty much nothing about AD except for what it was used for.

I hope it works for my interview tomorrow!

[–] bull@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If you want to combine what you've learned but make it a bit more modern/fancier, have a look at FSLogix Profile Containers. It's just setting up file shares and creating a GPO but has one extra step which is installing an agent.

Probably an hour maximum and you get to add another skill to your arsenal.

There are a bunch of YouTube videos which run through it available too if you prefer that over doco.

I just saw your interview is tomorrow.. ok it might be a little late in the evening now.

I've been working inside enterprise level active directory for a long long time and if you get the basics of GPO, filtering, policy ordering that's a great start. GPO loopback is pretty important to know about in complex environments too.

Tried nextdoor, my god it looks like an express freeway to mental illness. Or maybe it's my neighbourhood.

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I downloaded that last week and thought it was pretty pointless. I wanted to see if anybody was complaining about the damn car alarm. It seems that so few people here are on it, that their idea of a "neighbourhood" is anything within about 30km of me

It was also really dead. The top post was somebody at some dodgy company trying to recruit people, the next 2 were people introducing themselves, then the next one was form 12 weeks ago from people in Kingsville complaining people had broken into their cars. I don't live anywhere near Kingsville...

Middle Foots on FB isn’t crap if that’s a better locale match

Today is Potato Gem Day. πŸ˜‹

I'm wearing pants in my own home. It's officially cold season.

I might even put on a t-shirt instead of a singlet. But that's an absolute last resort.

Since we're accelerating toward mid-year... Q(s) time (inspired by @CEOofmyhouse56):

What goal/s have you achieved so far this year and what are you hoping to by EOY?

(Still working on mine so I'll just put down getting to see some major travel landmarks, although that's more of a lifetime/bucket list/travel thing.)

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 10 points 6 months ago

This weekend we've been purging. I can't even think of the right words. I'm tired. I'm very overwhelmed by the shit that came out of my daughter's room. It's all good just overwhelming.

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 9 points 6 months ago

I finally quit call centre work and am starting a TAFE course that will lead me to working in an industry that I've wanted to be in since I was in HS.

Am getting back on the therapy wagon after a hiatus.

Seeing my dad more often, as he's the only parent I talk to and I love him, involving overcoming my own feelings of failure and not being good enough

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Things feel very 'one step forward, two steps back'.

But I'm making progress on having my health taken seriously and hoping for some positive changes (or at least further appointments) by the end of the year. I've at least sharpened a bunch of charcoal and graphite pencils in case energy for art hits.

Other than that I'm basically just taking care of myself and my cat.

All of my plans/goals have been completely changed around by my father's illness, so I probably less achieved than I would have otherwise.

I have managed to max out my concessional super contributions this financial year and have gotten my clutter problem under control to the extent that moving house now seems like a real possibility. I was doing well with my garden & growing lots of vegies over summer, but the focus on that has now changed to keeping it tidy for future sale so my enthusiasm levels for that have dissipated a lot.

My goal for the end of year is mostly just to move house, which will involves selling two houses and consolidating households with myself and my mother, so is a big enough thing to focus on without adding anything else.

Hmm.... ticked some big items off so far out of necessity:

  • work out whether I'm staying or going re: Melbourne βœ…
  • find workplaces that are healthier and happier than my last place βœ…
  • get a cheap enough car βœ…
  • travel more - βœ… (partly)

But still a fair more to work through.

  • increase my earning potential at least a tad - tbc but partly βœ…
  • finalise finishing my degree - tbc (partly βœ…)
  • restore my savings used when unemployed - tbc
  • make new friends - tbc...
  • try going camping solo - tbc
  • find sustainable pathway to never working FT again - tbc
  • figure out a regular fitness routine that I like - very much tbc
  • cat??? 🐱😸😺 - πŸ€”

Finding a role lol

Oh and either joining a band again, or performing solo.

I went and got myself a treat of a couple of HJs breakfast wraps and both were missing the bacon and now I am the sad.

[–] Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

I had to re-read that for a minute.

Let's just put it down to my ongoing insomnia.

I need to get through another 90 mins of tutorial video. Each minute of video is approx 3 minutes of realt time, with my note taking and practice.

My brain feels tired ☹️

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You can do it! I believe in you!

[–] Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Thank you! 1 hour down, one to go. Im about halfway through filling a 150 page exercise book with notes. Crazy shit.

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago

That's amazing! Seriously! You are doing awesome!!!

That pet heating pad gets quite hot when covered (by blanket, and probably by cat). It says it has a cutoff but tells you to use a thermometer to test the surface so I don't know how safe it is to have in the bed.

Crackers and broth for breakfast. For some reason pusscat loves both. (Zero onions or garlic involved.) She got some crumbs and a tiny bit of broth spooned over her wet food and polished off the whole meal.

Hey, I found something that might be a little bit amusing to for you.

Game came out recently called Little Kitty, Big City.

Little sandbox game where you play as a cat. It can be finished fairly quickly but might be worth a look at for amusement’s sake.

Extremely boring non descriptive day today.

Did some vacuuming, made some coffee and put it a glass coffee cup tumbler that I had hidden away and it’s been very good at keeping it hot for quite a long time.

Maybe might chill with some movies later but I don’t know if I’m in the mood to watch them yet.

Also fresh coffee brewed from the stovetop. So raw and fresh.

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I did my vacuuming yesterday. Then just to up the excitement level I steam cleaned the lounge room. Miss Meow was very unimpressed, but bravely returned for cuddles not long after the scary noisy monster was put away.

Feels like I frittered around a lot today, at least I managed to work out which days I'll be in a certain area and booked another car reservation (area requires a car to traverse). That felt like a lot of work. Plus going to a friend's place to pick up a backpack kindly loaned for this trip.

Buuuuuuuut I HAVEN'T EVEN REMOTELY STARTED TO PACK and I leave in less than 48 hours and I have work on both Mon and Tue that I have to go into the office for. And I still haven't organised my SIM card or travel insurance... and I still have some food to cook and freeze before I go... god I'm so last minute with this trip.

Okay, deep breath because I know I can control this and I pack very efficiently at the last minute.

G'night.

strawberry spread I gotta try this. I don't like the chocolatiness of nutella all that much, so I think this will be much nicer. Might try it with frozen mango .... Not that I'm against choc as such, I just prefer it differently formed.
