Buried some of Mum's ashes in the back garden of the new place, at about the time she died two years ago.
A magpie started singing as I covered them up. She would have liked that, I think.

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 7 points 6 months ago (2 children)

There's something about magpies...they know stuff, I reckon. That's lovely

[โ€“] dumblederp@aussie.zone 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I moved a dead magpie off the road a while ago. There were a bunch of magpies on the powerlines around it. I sort of placed it in order next to a tree in the nature strip. They all started squawking when I picked it up, and started warbling when I placed it. I tossed out a handful of broken up dog treats, for their wake. I think they got it.

e: I remembered before all that above, what got my attention was, they were freaking out at what turned out to be cars passing near the dead magpie on the road. I was concerned for their safety getting riled up at the cars, which is why I moved it.

today's task: cat butt shield for roomba CLEAN button.

The number of cats joyriding the roomba at inconvenient hours is too damned high

I'm pleasantly surprised by the specialist I saw. After years of other specialists shrugging their shoulders and saying it's psychosomatic, kind of being jerks about it, this guy has suggested MALS or Nutcracker Syndrome as a cause of the pain.

Tests will be had at some point. Fingers crossed something treatable is found because living like this is arse

[โ€“] Mittens_meow@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

Fingers crossed for youโ€ฆ

I needed to cancel on seeing a friend so I can see a doctor tonight but I can't or he'll get really pissed off at me.

I don't have many friends to begin with and can't afford to lose any.

Yay.

[โ€“] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 8 points 6 months ago

If your mate cant understand the need to see a doctor over a prearranged meet up then they aint your friend to begin with. With that said, a "Sorry, I cant make X, can we do Y instead?" goes over better than "sorry I cant make it"

[โ€“] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 8 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Sky glowing. Also tomorrow will be the last nice day for a while - enjoy it thoroughly peeps!

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I will be enjoying it by mowing my grass, removing a few weeds and (if the enthusiasm levels are high enough) poisoning some other weeds.

Been getting outdoors as much as possible lately. The sun has been glorious. No seasonal depression to speak of, but it's going to arrive like a ton of bricks on the weekend.

You'd think that having lived in Melbourne so long, my friends and I would know to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly, but despite knowing that there would be some bad weather associated with a low pressure system hitting the south of Japan today, we didn't think to bail from the island yesterday... and this morning's ferries are now all cancelled.

Luckily I was able to change our ticket to an afternoon ferry but it means I might get to my accommodation in Hiroshima rather late tonight - assuming the ferry even runs, because there's every chance it might be cancelled too and we'll have to stay here for an extra night... thank fuck I hadn't booked my shinkansen ticket but hopefully I can still make it to a later leg of my travel where I've got accom and car rental booked. Time to just chill for now though

[โ€“] DolphinLundgrin@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'm on a Shinkansen to Kyoto at the moment. Yes I have wet feet. Off to Hiroshima next week, maybe we can swap tips, if you're heading to Kyoto or Tokyo? But fair warning, all my tips will be bars and record stores. ๐Ÿ˜‹

[โ€“] just_kitten@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ooh what a coincidence! Yep it's looking wet all across south and east Japan. I'm only spending one night in Hiroshima unfortunately, and then tootling around Shikoku (mostly driving through amazing scenery, visiting some natural features and seeing some traditional villages). Won't be going to the big cities aside from one night + day in Tokyo before I fly off. If there's just one place you'd recommend checking out in Tokyo that's a bit alternative or off the beaten track what would it be? I confess I don't do big cities that well which is why I'm spending the least amount of time possible in Tokyo. How long will you be down in Hiroshima?

[โ€“] DolphinLundgrin@aussie.zone 3 points 6 months ago (2 children)

That sounds great! Good luck with your ferry, too! We're in Kyoto for most of this week, but just spending two nights in Hiroshima after. We had hoped to get further into the countryside, but didn't plan ahead well enough. I was fairly apprehensive about giant, bustling Tokyo too, but we stayed in Akasaka which was actually really manageable in terms of crowds etc. (but still has loads of bars, restaurants, shops) Its a bit of a business-ier district, so Friday night was busy, but the rest not so bad. Bar Luther in Akasaka seats about 10 people, plays 70's/80's RnB & Soul - all on vinyl and all done in between mixing (great and cheap) drinks! But we couldn't get in on Friday. Harajuku was pretty good for vintage (sometimes $$$) clothes shopping, but was cuter and quieter than Shibuya proper. In writing this, I realise we havent really departed from the well beaten track yet.

The $$ n95 masks that I coughed up for in small/medium size are still too big. My lower eyelashes shouldnโ€™t be touching the mask. TIL my face is really small?

It amazes me that I still sweat so much on my runs when it's so cold out.

Edit - I see people running in down vests for Christ's sake

[โ€“] mysticgreg@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'd sweat standing still in a freezer :(

I'm not sure why they thought major freeway/road works AND buses replace trains at the same time was a good idea! Last week was stuck on a bus standing room only hurtling down the monash at 100kmh. This morning I drove to a station that has trains running and was stuck between tradies and SUVs hurtling down the monash at 120kmh. Terrifying in the little sedan. Cant win for losing.

[โ€“] Baku@aussie.zone 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'm not anti seatbelts or anything like that, but I love the irony in how strictly (and expensively) enforced seatbelts in cars are, but them when it comes to replacement buses, it's ok to stand while your NASCAR wannabe bus driver is doing 100 (or 110) down the freeway. Idk what it's like over your ways, but the buses they used for the Sunbury line were so run down and old I don't think there's much hope of surviving a crash even at 60 while you're sitting, let alone standing. Plus city buses are almost exclusively low floor and don't have very thick side panelling, so there's no protection you'd get like I'm a road coach

[โ€“] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

Absolutely! We were hurtling along and I had that meme pop into my head "hehe, I'm in danger" cause if something goes wrong I'm TOAST!

Tourism in Australia is too expensive. I went overseas to Japan a few years ago, after pricing up a Queensland holiday for 2 weeks.

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 6 months ago

Australian wages are too low when only the rich and foreigners can afford holidays here.

Is a flight to China from Melbourne really about 9 hours? I swear I thought it would be like 15 for some reason. Hell, I figure flying one side of China to another is like 7 hours.

[โ€“] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago

There may be some time zone jiggery pokery going on. I believe some China destinations are only 2 hours behind us, so the flight time would be reduced by that amount. Perth is in the same time zone as China.

Got the new MacBook Pro yesterday. Today the new iPad Air 13" and iPhone 15 arrived. What is the collective noun for Apple devices? Is it a hipster? I have a hipster of Apple devices now.

A walled garden of Apple devices.

Dear furniture delivery peeps.... when you say that you will tell me that the pakige is ready for dispatch and then again on the day of delivery.....please don't get the poor delivery driver to just call me from the truck with 40 mins notice....

What do they think people do all day?? Currently in an uber heading home from the office so I don't get double charged for delivery ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก

My eye has been twitching for 2 days. I'm getting close to ripping it out, but I'm not sure if its the eye itself or just the eyelid, so I dont wanna jump to any extremes without knowing.
