Haven't watched 'TV' in over 15 years

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

When people ask questions like this they need to clarify if Netflix is included in their definition of tv.

In my opinion watching TV is watching TV regardless of the source.

But people need to clarify the question.

No TV and no Netflix here. Does YouTube count?

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you are using it to watch 30 second to 6 minute videos then no.

If you are using it to watch full length movies or full TV episodes, then yes in my definition it does.

[–] tehmics@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Who watches movie and TV shows on YouTube?

I watch primarily YouTube and it's all hobby/educational content. And it's not 6 minute videos. It sounds like you're stuck in 2005 YouTube era.

[–] cubedsteaks@lemmy.today 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I actually have YouTube TV which is their live tv package.

[–] tehmics@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which is a different service called YouTube TV, so yeah, probably reasonable to call it 'watching TV' in that case, considering it's in the name.

[–] cubedsteaks@lemmy.today 1 points 1 year ago

oh yeah I wasn't arguing that. Even YouTube makes the distinction but it is still technically YouTube.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

It's called linear television now.

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

TV? What's that?

Everything through my laptop. Except for a shared Netflix account that costs me 5 bucks a month, and I only watch it on my phone.

TV? What's that?

We all know Frankenstein is the doctor, not the monster.

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

How does it cost $5/month?

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We split the costs, as I said my part is 5. Because shared.

Makes perfect sense now. I think my brain had a moment

i dont watch television i more often stream or pirate.

[–] Kazumara@feddit.de 8 points 1 year ago

No, I don't

Plex + HDHR = beautiful.

For everything else I just sail some seas.

Helps that I'm a lifetime plex member and have been for a long time now.

Sonarr/Radarr > Jellyfin > Nvidia shield > Denon AVR > LG OLED 🀌

[–] TurnItOff_OnAgain@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have a local plex server and obtain all my media with other methods

Not 100% true. A while back I bought a ton of dvds from a going out a business sale for like 10c each. I ripped them onto my server and stuck the dvd in storage.

I'm talking over 150 movies for cheap

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

That’s awesome!

[–] ghashul@feddit.dk 6 points 1 year ago

I've never had TV since I moved out from home.

Where I live, you get very little over air TV. In fact, I'm not sure there's anything now.

We don't pay for TV, but I have a little yo-ho-ho station, check out DVDs from the library, stream, or occasionally watch one of those free Pluto channels if I just want background noise

[–] Gnorv@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Notnotmike@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In the United States here and I haven't had non-streaming television since I moved out of my parent's house.

Toyed with things like Sling and YouTube TV once, but they just aren't worth it.

[–] Gnorv@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

If I watch any shows or movies it is from a selfhosted Jellyfin server. No need for any subscriptions or cable TV.

[–] applejacks@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Neither at the moment, but cable is actually getting more appealing giving the constant splintering of streaming services.

I had an antenna set up to see what I could get, and I can pick up affiliates from all the major networks, which is nice.

But it's so full of commercials I can't stand watching anything other than PBS so I took it down.

[–] Catsrules@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah you really need something to record the TV then watch it later skipping the commercials in order for it to be useful.

[–] Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I use over-the-air supplemented by a few streaming services. After years of cable, it was startling how much better the picture and sound are with OTA. It used to be that cable was better quality, but they have compressed it down to the point where it is just barely acceptable.

[–] kuneho@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I pay for cable, even pay extra for HBOs and 24/7 porn channel, tho this latter costs me $0.0028 per month so why not (it's bad).

[–] cubedsteaks@lemmy.today 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what cable package do you have?

[–] kuneho@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

well, I'm in Hungary and have Digi TV subscription (it's a Romanian carrier that's in service in my country as well)

around 4 years ago when I contracted with them it was super cheap. since then it's almost 3 times more expensive. it's a usual thing here that long-time subscribers pay more and more just for fun I guess?

My TV is used for F1 (via now TV - internet stream) and occasionaly YouTube and occasionaly video/games of my laptop.

If I did watch TV content it would likely be on iPlayer etc as I would never know when to watch things live

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I have an OTA antenna but it's really just there in case we need news and the internet is out. In the same we that there's a crank radio in my emergency supplies. Everything else is Roku.

[–] Efwis@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

USA here. Where I live if you want to watch anything you have to pay for it or ride the high seas. OTA doesn’t work in rural communities, this signal is too weak from the big cities, and even in the city OTA can be questionable based on location.

[–] Catsrules@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never had problems with OTA signal in my area. I did have a antenna on the roof in all of my locations so that might have helped.

[–] Efwis@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago

Yea, see I live in an apartment, so I am stuck using those indoor antennas

I have over the air, but I mostly use the internet

USA: Have an antenna for OTA, don't actually use it much.

[–] knobbysideup@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Ota + Plex + pluto

[–] 1984@lemmy.today -2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

In Sweden we have to pay for TV through taxes. And then they use the money to make propaganda programs paid by the tax payers. Works well for keeping the population docile.
