@games Games to replace Total War: Warhammer 3 with?

There have been rumors/controversies about the next #totalwar Warhammer 3 DLC, while I don't personally believe them, it's true that we're reaching the lifecycle end of this franchise, I'm thinking of a contingency plan, I've played this series since 2017, and to replace with something else is going to take a while.

Still, here are some of my ideas, and I would like to hear others from the community

Age of Wonders 4 has been entertaining me alongside TWW3 recently. It’s a 4X turn based strategy game with dark fantasy elements from Triumph Studios and published by Paradox.

It has some pretty good customization elements and I’ve been enjoying playing the different types of empire combos. There’s also an Lovecraftian eldritch horror DLC coming out this month.

@Jaderick Yeah, Age of Wonders 4 seems to be the closest alternative, any opinion on Spellforce: Conquest of Eo, Disciples 2, or Solium Infernum?

I absolutely love disciples 2 and would highly recommend it. The unit progression trees give it a lot of replayability. Even though the third instalment gets worse reviews it’s also pretty good and has some nice graphics and a more dynamic battlefield. Maybe consider its competition as well (heroes of might and magic and eador). There is a far east themed 4x game called oriental empires that also has interesting army mechanics. Humankind and millennia sound like titles that should at least be mentioned even if you already pointed out that you don’t like paradox.

Solium Infernum as a standalone game is quite fun. I haven't played TWW3 though, so I couldn't tell you how similar it is.

I honestly had not heard of those games so you introduced those to me lol. They look interesting and I’ll probably pick them up when they go on sale

@games

I'm open to suggestions, both games new and old, as long as they stick to the dark fantasy setting

Also, if this post looks weird to you, that's because I'm experimenting posting from Mastodon to Lemmy

EDIT: So, it turns out that if you post more than 1 image on Mastodon, lemmy will only show the 1st one, TIL

The other ideas are Disciples 2, Solium Infernum, and Age of Wonders 4

Songs of Conquest if you’re looking at turn based 4X games.

If you're okay with much older titles, Master of Orion 2 has been my go-to 4X for 30 years. It holds up really well.

If you want something a little newer and absolutely brilliant, and you don't mind sacrificing some 4X for some RPG, you could try Starsector: https://fractalsoftworks.com

Neither of these are particularly similar to the Total War games, though, in case that's a deal breaker.

@voracitude Thanks, anything revolving around a dark fantasy setting?

I can't contribute to this specifically, but I love this topic and would love to see something like an indie alternatives community. personally I'm still hooked on civ vi and can't find anything that scratches the itch (paradox and sega aren't good alternatives to 2k)

Some of us have been waiting more than a decade for an alternative to Empire: Total War
