My boss is going on leave for four weeks as of today, so I asked my bosses boss of they'll be my reference. They will, and it was pretty chill

I know this is news to exactly nobody, but job hunting sucks balls.

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I hear that's a good way to get a job and a raise

[โ€“] underwatermagpies@aussie.zone 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Unclear when the 'get a job' step kicks in though.

Now this hotel doesn't have very good soundproofing (at this point I don't believe any building in Australia does) and I can hear everything happening in the hallway and the rooms next to me. BUT I've got a splitty in my room and I set it to come on if it goes under 19 and this is great. So much easier to wake up when it's not like 5ยฐ in your room

I still couldn't get a very good sleep though. Dozed off again at 5:30 or so and woke up again now. But tonight I'll have a better sleep

I'm so, so, so tired.

I think gym this morning is the reason. It's day 4 of 6am wake up and I think I'm almost normal.

I'm eating dinner, kidnapping the cat and going to bed. Goodnight all โค๏ธ

[โ€“] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 6 points 5 months ago

Keep it up and you might be able to make 6am thr regular time. Push through!

Winter solstice, time to burn stuff and make a joyful noise

Good aussie tradition that. Burn shit in a drum.

I think I'll wear my slippers around the house all the time.

I got the kids some hot wheels cars and one is a stegosaurs. Essentially its a spike trap on wheels. Couple that with their puzzle pieces with little handles on them and there are a few nasty things to step on.

I want to avoid the very dad thing of stepping on one of the kids' toys at an unfortunate moment

My daughter's at Coles and she texts me to ask if I want anything. So I sent a shitload of texts back in a row. Get donuts. Cinnamon donuts. Or whatever. And biscuits. Any biscuits. I don't care which ones. You want your dad to pick you up. Hello.

Crazy tooth pain tuesday night, saw my dentist yesterday, tooth extracted (2nd one in 2 months but it had to go), today is pretty much pain free with like no soreness in my gums or jaw. I'm glad, but also odd.

There was a kid in the ER last night with the same name as my kid. He had his hand smashed with a brick at school and he was still waiting after we left. Poor little fella was OVER it and just wanted to go to bed, hope he is ok.

Whilst I'm positive about my plans for the future in general I'm a bit apprehensive about moving house too. It's all the little changes, stuff like where the teaspoons are is pretty much muscle memory now, I've been in the same place for 18 years now so the little routines are quite ingrained. Plus I have to get used to sharing space again and all the compromises that entails. All while reassuring a cat and dog who will also be stressed by the transition.

At least by the time everything is sorted out to actually make a move it should be Spring, so I won't have to contend with either freezing cold or boiling hot temperatures.

I just realised I have had my car 18 years. Am I supposed to throw it a big party or something?

[โ€“] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 8 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Oooo. We should have a joint 18th. Take them down to the servo, fill them up. It'll be an expensive night.

slept really good the last couple of nights, but had an emotionally draining day yesterday. Only thing that seems to help is music. I feel like I could put my head on a pillow and sleep in 3 second.

Crazy how in the other place threads about world events get swarmed overnight when most of us are asleep. Really makes you think.

[โ€“] Baku@aussie.zone 9 points 5 months ago

I notice that here too, which really annoys me. I understand it a little bit more on Reddit, but it pisses me off so much when there's an article from abc.net.au posted in c/AustralianNews@aussie.zone and half the comments are just Americans being confused.

I guess that's the one positive of the week long federation delays with Lemmy World - most of the Americans are segregated into their own isolated cosm for about a week until it federates over here

My landlord is actually really good. House is pretty shit but he's a really chill guy. Feel pretty lucky. I wish I could transport this place about 10kms closer to the city.

Just cancelled my prime membership. In truth, I haven't been buying enough from Amazon to justify it, but it isn't something I think about all that often.

Then they emailed me last week saying "hey, we'll be introducing ads to Prime on July 1st"

Yeah, nah. I can't justify that. What surprised me though is that it was moderately easy to cancel. I thought cancelling was needlessly complicated and they just got in trouble about that.

Woke up overheated. Went outside for a breath of air - there is no wind. Feels quite warm compared to yesterday.

Why did I book my flight for later this afternoon? I'd be in Melbourne by now if I went the morning flight.

I bought a tomato yesterday to have on a brekkie roll but I eated it last night

[โ€“] Baku@aussie.zone 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I went to sleep at like 7 but then woke up at 10:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. Took some melatonin, hopefully it kicks in soon.

I don't get physically home sick, but when I'm away from home I always find it difficult to sleep. This is also the first time I've been at a hotel on my own as well, which adds to it

[โ€“] Nath@aussie.zone 6 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I've read that people did this for centuries: went to bed early, woke up for a few hours around midnight and then had a second sleep to the morning.

I don't know whether that's really true, but it certainly matches my personal experience. If I go to sleep early and I'm not completely exhausted, I'll wake up around 11 and be awake for the next 2-3 hours. I am usually up past midnight so this doesn't often come up.

I have had a realisation that todays kids will never experience a life where they are not under constant observation. And itโ€™s probably willingly. Social media, tracking aps on phone from parents, data collected on their preferences for any media they engage with, smart watches that monitor movement and sleep, etc.

Far out that was a long day. 10 solid hours of work, on green tea only (really not cutting it), plus a lot of faffing around with getting locked in the office building because I stayed so late... It's too early in my job to start pulling long hours. But I'm telling myself it's a once off due to a particular combination of unanticipated things. That, and I want to do half day on Monday for cake related reasons, so it's Strategic. I will NOT let it be a pattern! I have Boundaries.

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You know how some days you seem to have really great focus and get all your work done so well you surprise yourself? This is not one of those days. At least there's only about an hour left, then I'm free to go home and hope my lack of focus does not extend to forgetting to put the bins out tonight.

Had such a weird interaction today. I've been trying to buy Road Dogs by Elmore Leonard. Book Grocer had it and have had it for ages, I finally took the plunge because I can pick it up from the warehouse when I'm in Melbourne. I put it in my cart, but before I decided to buy it, I did a quick check on google to see if I could get it cheaper anywhere and saw there was a signed copy on ebay. He's one of my favourite writers and it's pretty cheap but coming from the USA and the shipping was more than the book (go figure). I asked the guy if he'd consider shipping with someone else who might be cheaper (instead of ebay global or whatever it's called) and he replied overnight not having a clue how to do that so I figure it's not meant to be.

Go to bookgrocer and Road Dogs is gone. Not available. They must have sold it which is so highly coincidental that it gets sold on the day I finally decide to buy it. But you snooze you lose, right?

So I check on facebook marketplace and some guy in Balaclava has it and is selling it. So I message him today asking if it's available.

He says yes.

I ask how much.

He says $7.

I figure bargain. I asked when is he free, I'll be in Melbourne over the weekend.

He tells me when he's free.

Great. I'll grab the book.

Then he asks where I am coming from.

I tell him Bundoora.

He says it's a bit far.

I said that's fine, I'll have a car.

He says 'but if you factor in time and petrol, it will cost more than shipping which is $10.90.'

I got a bit annoyed because who cares so I said, don't worry, I'll get it elsewhere.

Dude talked himself out of a sale (though I figure he makes a couple of bucks on the shipping so his $7 turns into $10 maybe).
