As the country is already in economic turmoil with the national currency collapsing and inflation soaring, many Iranians are increasingly questioning the government's priorities, feeling the weight of a regime that appears more focused on foreign conflicts than addressing the dire needs at home.

Yep, as another put: it's the economy, stupid.

It's the basic building block of keeping domestic peoples happy. Otherwise everyone questions why money and effort is being spent on x, instead of fixing the economy.

And they're already pretty tired of living in a theocracy.

A lot of people on Lemmy seem to hate that I try to find something positive even in extremely negative situations, but I'm going to do it again: I hope that an upside of this will be a toppling of Iran's theocracy.

And because I apparently have to clarify this every time I say this sort of thing, this is in no way an endorsement of anything Israel has done. Fuck ethnostates and fuck theocracies. I am team no one in this war.

Religion has zero place in government

I had to look this up, In case anyone else didn't know. DW.com is like NPR, but for Germany.

There was relevant scandal in 2020 where the Guardian reported on racism, misogyny, toxic work conditions, and antisemitism at DW. DW responded to these accusations by cutting ties with a partner news outlet from the Middle East, and firing a handful of employees after their socials were trawled for"antisemitism". (two of whom sued successfully for wrongful termination) DW also updated their code of conduct to read:

Germany's historical responsibility for the Holocaust is also a reason for which we support the right of Israel to exist

Which could be read as benign if we didn't already know that Israel's "right to exist" is a cudgel to label any anti-Zionist sentiment as antisemitic.

Overall, we rate Deutsche Welle (DW) Left-Center biased based on editorial positions that slightly favor the left. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a clean fact check record. (8/15/2016) Updated (M. Huitsing 05/26/2024)

Deutsche Welle is a German state-owned international broadcaster. It is considered generally reliable. Some editors consider that the quality of DW depends on the language edition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Welle

Deutsche Welle (pronounced [ˈdɔʏtʃə ˈvɛlə] ⓘ; "German Wave"), commonly shortened to DW (pronounced [deːˈveː]), is a German public, state-owned international broadcaster funded by the German federal tax budget. The service is available in 32 languages. DW's satellite television service consists of channels in German, English, Spanish, Hindi, Persian, and Arabic. The work of DW is regulated by the Deutsche Welle Act, stating that content is intended to be independent of government influence. DW is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Additionally, dw.com has been posted here countless times before with no question. I see no reason to question it here as well.
