in case anyone else was wondering after looking at this meme, I don't think roblox has actually died, their website is the same as always

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 53 points 1 week ago

Just a meme being misused as usual

[–] takeda@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What actually happened? I know nothing about it except the name. Why it is considered dead by others?

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They're currently in litigation one child labor exploitation for profiting off of child made content and for terrible child safety standards for basically ignoring that it was a pedophile feeding ground. It's not dead though, probably going to be profitable forever.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

Still profitable you say? Sounds like a slap on the wrist is due here and we let the exploitation continue!

"You was..." I'm hoping that's on purpose.

The grim and cockney reaper.

Is it finally being shut down? Don't get my hopes up

the idea of Roblox was very great, if it just wasn't marketed towards kids, and the moderation wasn't as bad, it would've been much better.

The idea of letting kids make video games for other kids was great IMO. The idea that it had be financialized with micro transactions that resulted in a mass child labor scheme was that problem.

the Roblox studio editor is a little too complicated for kids to make interesting games. scratch is way better at doing that. (scratch is also better because there's no way to spend any money) Roblox with a block editor instead of Lua and if you could only spend money on cosmetics would be perfect

or, if kids could choose to use a block editor so that more experienced programmers could still make complex games

Yeah that marketing is the main reason why they dug themselves down into controversies

I never knew how good I had it when I played it as a kid. I've come back a couple times in the last few years just to monitor the state of things, and yeah it's an absolute dumpster fire.

It used to be the biggest cultivator of creativity for kids on the internet... Now it's the biggest cultivator of capitalism and scumbaggery in children.

God I miss the old Roblox. Every now and then I come back to see what's up. A lot of the old places are still there, but some of the scripts don't work anymore. I always look back at my old places from waaaaayyy back and every time I do I see them through different eyes and come to understand child me a little bit differently. Roblox around '08 was really something special.

By the way, if you were active on the old forums somebody went and archived them: https://archive.froast.io/

I'm glad I never used my actual name, looking at my dumbass posts lol

EDIT: By the way, there's some really cool shit being made by the new kids, I mean Roblox did make a ton of money off them after all. Recently I played a bit of the AoT game. And of course there's Dress to Impress. The barrier to entry for places is a lot higher now.

My nephews rather play one piece roblox than some cool beat em ups with me and that makes me a little sad

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

is there any alternative? I used to like it as a kid, but it turned to shit, (like everything).
