Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

Atleast in Features. It will 100% become better if they added true decentralisation.

Since Bluesky has twice as many users as mastodon, I’m thinking this opinion isn’t truly unpopular.

No no. Not twice as many.

Mastodon has, from a google search a few days ago about 975k users.

Bluesky, goohle search 30 seconds later had 20 million users, and a news story that they gained 700k users in the past 24 hours (at the time). So I'm unclear if the 700k is included in the 20 mil, or if it should be more like 20.7mil.

Either way, it's far from 1.5mil total.

They just passed 21 millions

Not sure if it's that unpopular nowadays. Starter packs, moderation lists, global search go a long way compared to Mastodon

Seriously, Mastodon has languished under Gagron and it's probably not gonna grow much more. They spent years hemming and hawing about adding quote posts, they ignored the problems with onboarding for years before just defaulting to .social, they're still clueless what to do about moderation and harassment despite piles of user feedback, bug reports, pull requests. This is one case where an open source BDFL just entirely tanks a project.

It is a corporation that is trying to squeeze money from you! They will take money in exchange for:

  1. Your personal information
  2. Prioritizing posts
  3. De-prioritizing posts
  4. Shadow banning users
  5. Forcing you to use an app so they can get even more personal info

And on and on and on... There is no reason to think they're better...

I said in features. In moral hell Mastodon is ∞ times better than BlueSky.

  1. Prioritizing posts
  2. De-prioritizing posts
  3. Shadow banning users
  4. Forcing you to use an app so they can get even more personal info

But they didn't did those thing yet. Don't know about future. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Answers here:

Specifically starting with this section:

Bluesky is fun, but won't it inevitably be ruined by horrible billionaires like the other social media websites I've used over the last 15 years?

[–] sag@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

That's why we need a true decentralisation on Bluesky.

Is it hard to host a server for friends and family?

Everyone loves the shiny new thing when it's still burning through VC money and hasn't been sold off for value extraction yet.

Shorter messages that can't be edited are great. 😅
