Summary

Donald Trump suggested Canada could become the U.S.’s “51st state,” claiming it would benefit Canadians through lower taxes and military protection.

The remark follows tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, which shocked Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who likened it to betrayal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the annexation talk as unserious but unveiled a $1 billion border security plan to address U.S. concerns.

The escalating rhetoric, including insults from Trump ally Elon Musk, highlights strained Canada-U.S. relations ahead of Trump’s second term.

I don't care if its a joke. Jokes about countries not being real, being artificial, questioning sovereignty. all of that became completely unfunny after Feb 24 2022

the dichotimy of the US and Canada, is eerily similar to that of Russia and Ukraine.

Neighbors, Cultural ties, History of imperialism attempted or otherwise, Tinpot expansionist ambitions for no better reason than Russkiy Mir / Manifest Destiny / DURR LINES ON MAPS BIGGER.

I remember when Trump joked about running for president. He also joked about sexually assaulting women. Then he joked about supporting white supremacists, undermining democracy, etc. Every Trump joke is a probe to see if his supporters will back him.

So what are we going to do about it? Nukes?

If he actually had left NATO the problem would have solved itself, but he's gone back on that. As it is he could just kind of take the country.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 2 points 11 minutes ago* (last edited 10 minutes ago)

I dont know what we will do, but I know the answer isn't to just accept it and deal with it, like those foaming at the mouth screaming at Ukraine to just "sign a peace deal" when the terms of that issue is their country permanentley losing its sovereignty. You can't just roll over and take it. The Nukes thing is effectively a nonstarter here, as it is in Ukraine, because Nuclear proliferation is basically treated as an act of war by the UN sec council . In the view of the nuclear armed, No one is allowed to have Nuclear weapons but them, The days of countries starting nuclear programs and not getting bombed for it are long gone.

If such a thing was to happen, and the US Military didn't take care of the problem by coup'ing their obviously rogue administration, attacking its own allies. Then I suppose I'll be a statistic in the insurgency. I have no intention of living as a third class non-citizen in my own home to a foreign power and the traitors who invited them. I dont care if it's Chinese, Russian, or American.

I can't wait for a future where Trump doesn't exist. How much longer do we have to tolerate this shit?

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 hours ago

Listening to Trump is sooo incredibly exhausting. I can't do things for another four years+. My body just can't handle it.

Hoi4 popup: "Donald Trump furious at Canadian posturing."

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 49 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Ignore what he says. This is all distraction and engagement/attention capital. Only what he does matters. Come on people, this isn't our first Trump presidency. We know how he operates.

[–] SeriousMite@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Right. He dominates every news cycle saying like five unhinged things every day and people tune out after a while, and then they ignore what’s happening when he actually does something unhinged.

Been awhile since the Canadians burnt down the white house. USA might need another spanking to remind them about how this went last time.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 hours ago (4 children)

Canada did what? When? How? Why?

[–] Jamablaya@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

The version of the war of 1812 taught in the states is odd. Mostly focuses on the battle of New Orleans. The USA started the war as an attempt to invade and annex the Canadian British colonies in the east, and the war went so poorly they ended up (successfully, but still) defending Louisiana. Basically, if Napoleon hadn't started doing Napoleon things, the USA may well have become British again,

Barney's 300 sailors and 103 Marines nevertheless held off the British frontal attacks, launching counter-attacks armed with hand pikes and cutlasses, with cries of "Board'em! Board'em!"

This is hilarious 😂

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 hours ago

That was really bad hair day...

I don't think he realises how opposed Canadians are to this idea. Trudeau has been keeping quiet about this because they don't want to feed the troll. Meanwhile this orange moron thinks this means we're on board with this idea.

Canada might not be as wealthy as the US and might be in a housing crisis, but we still see the US as a dystopia for anyone who isn't the richest 5%.

[–] Jamablaya@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I don't think you've ever been west of Ontario, nobody much gives a shit either way. Eastern Bastards or Yankee bastards, same difference.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

The few Canada adjacent people in his ear are telling him Canadians are all miserable and repressed in a woke-communist dictatorship.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

You mean just like people around Putin told him that Ukrainians wanted to be liberated from Nazis?

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 85 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

He does not give one shit what Canadians or anyone else thinks of this "idea." It's not even a fully formed thought, it's just something he said while he was confused, and he covered by acting like he was making a suggestion. The guy has dementia, and he's surrounded by sycophants.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 hour ago

I really haven't seen evidence of dementia. He was always incoherent like this.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 43 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (4 children)

Until he's dead, in jail or in a retirement home for senile people I will not dismiss the threat that he represents. He keeps talking about it and started to refer to Canada as "the State of Canada" without realizing how hostile and insulting this comes across as. He's really thinking he can pull it off and this is scary. This motherfucker is going to use the crippling tariffs as leverage against Canada.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

without realizing how hostile and insulting this comes across as.

That's a generous take.

People from both countries (and various European nations when they want to needle us, but mostly the English) have been calling Canada the 51st state for decades, this is nothing new.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

We are aware of that. We still fucking hate it.

[–] Jamablaya@lemmy.world -4 points 1 hour ago

Truth hurts, huh? Even Trudeau (the smarter, deader one) has said it.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 hours ago

Please no. I need somewhere feasible to flee to.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 42 points 6 hours ago

In a perfect world, the president of the United States and the dumbest person on the planet would be different people.

We do not live in a perfect world.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 64 points 7 hours ago (12 children)

Personally, I'd prefer the US become Canada's 11th province or 4th territory.
