Dull Men's Club

1791 readers
159 users here now

An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

MODERATORS

I've created a new Lemmy instance at dullsters.net

When I created this community several months ago I had no aspirations of it becoming much of anything. In a short amount of time it has grown to over 1500 subscribers and is one of the top recommended non-political communities. I am always looking forward to the posts that are shared here, and the unique culture being developed.

I see the importance of the decentralized aspect of the Fediverse. We frequently see drama surrounding moderation and federation policies. None of that applies to the content in this community.

I have no qualms with admins running their site the way they want to and they are often placed in difficult positions. However, this is one of the true places of neutrality on the Fediverse and it should remain that way.

In the few months this community has existed there have been maybe a half dozen moderation actions taken. You have remained, for the most part, very dull, and I thank you for that.

The name of the community should be changed, I hadn't realized that dull men's club was the result of someone else's ideas and work. The new name should represent this community that you all have created and the place it exists, The Fediverse.

The new instance won't have any users except for the purpose of moderation, you will still use your account from a federated instance. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the site, it should be done whenever I get around to it.

In the meantime suggestions for the new name should be made in a top level comment so that they can be voted on.

Thank you all once again for making this community what it is.

Don't overthink (or try to be too interesting, LOL).

dullsters @dullsters.net

I also like that's a touch more inclusive.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Of course. Figured I wouldn't make it an auto-link since it doesn't exist, and may never exist.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Okay, I’ll just email you my posts then.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

So I owe you a mental apology. I was all like, "why are they bein' so salty?!" I mean, yeah, it's the same format as an email address, but you'd have to copy it, open your email, paste it in...

then I opened this thread Voyager.

Point taken.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh, I wasn’t intending to sound salty. I was going for dull: Email is much more dull than the fediverse.

And, yeah, I’m using Voyager, which prompted me replying with the ! to begin with.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

No worries, LOL. Strangers typing messages to each other will result in that.

For name ideas:

!prattle@dullsters.net

prattle: idle or foolish and irrelevant talk

It evokes the spirit of doddering, dull, old fashioned men but without being specifically gendered or referring to any other brand.

Or,

!leagueofextraordinarydullness@dullsters.net

Perhaps a little long and I've never seen the League of Extraordinary Gentleman so I don't even know if it's irrelevant or deeply inappropriate but it has a pleasant ring to it

Or,

!mildydull@dullsters.net

Follows in the spirit of mildy... communities which is generic and not tied to any specific brand

I like this one (although there are some really good ideas here!). It's a spin on the original name and unique to the Fediverse. Also not everything needs to be inclusive. It's just a place meant for guys to shoot the shit. Changing the name that way would take away from the comedy imo. And anyway you can pose as a dull man on the internet, who's gonna know? Lol ;)

[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So what if someone else came up with the name "Dull Men's Club"? We can co-opt any name we want. There's no rule that says whomever says a name first on the internet gets dibs forever.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

The real dull men's club has existed for 40 years, they have branding and a website.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Conflicted.

The only thing you've done is create a competitive community, which will no doubt split the community.

If something had grown popular, and there's no reason to move, why initiate it imo.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I guess my thought process is what if two large instances defederate for whatever reason. Will people create a second account just to post here? My hope is that the community moves over to the new instance.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We have 1500 members here, how many do you think will move in the first place?

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I'm not sure, it might be none,it might be more, we'll see i suppose.

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 16 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

On one hand it feels weird that a whole instance should be spun off for this. On the other I just say fuck it, decentralization helps spread the load.

Cool to see this happen and I'll be following on how it turns out

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

But now we can branch it off and have like a dull gardening community and a dull cooking one, a place for people to say something they've done today that was dull but worthwhile, the dullness is endless.

[–] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

That's what I was thinking, too. Dull DIY, Dull gaming. Maybe one like Dull Work where you can share minor work wins nobody else you know would care about.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago

It actually increases the load, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if it helps prevent centralization.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago

That sounds like way too much effort for me.

Just so you know, dullsters was also coined by the person who started the club. He used it to refer to members. It was submitted to the Oxford English dictionary, but I don't think it got in.

And the archive link: https://archive.md/hwzsa

There's also been a bunch of rival Facebook groups for this, I wouldn't worry too much about this one also being called the dull men's club.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I will make sure to attribute it to him, as well as being the inspiration for the community. My thought was that I'm not the owner of Dull Men's Club, I don't have permission to use the name. However, we are Dullsters here, the term isn't exclusive to Dull Men's Club. The term deserves widespread use as a new and novel word. The more it gets used the closer it gets to being an "official" word, which I think the creator of Dull Men's Club is proud of.

I understand why it's called as such, but I'm not really a fan of the community being called 'dull', as I've found quite a few of the posts pretty interesting. Maybe I too am just dull, lol.

Maybe something like "Everyday Life" would be a good fit.

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

as I’ve found quite a few of the posts pretty interesting.

As has been suggested by @Rogue@feddit.uk - you can have a mildlydull community for things that are just a bit too racey for some.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

I like dull. I think calling it that is a celebration of the mundane.

Everyday Life somehow sounds more boring

It's offline at the moment

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I'm still making changes getting things ready and whatnot. It's a bit of a learning curve.

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 2 points 5 days ago

Ah I see. Good luck, you'll get there :3
