I just want to play Magic the Gathering Online. I need it for nothing else. It runs like ass under WINE and even Proton. So if there is any other way I can do this, without going the nuclear option, I don"t even need to setup a VM for it.

Have you tried installing MTGO using Lutris? Apparently it works fine, but you'll need some tweaks. The key is to use windowed mode, disable music and card animations:

Runner options: -Use the latest version of lutri-proton if it's not the default. -Use windowed (virtual desktop) mode and the display resolution of whatever device you are playing on. This was the biggest fix of most problems for me with stuff related to proper rendering of windows. -All else is default from Lutris install

System options: -Uncheck restrict number of cores -Disable desktop effects -All else is default from Lutris install

In-game options: -Disable or silence music and Uncheck play client startup music -Disable card animations(summoning sickness and foil treatment)

I've also found that it is always better to close the program using the Stop button on Lutris, there's a bug where sometimes if you close out of the game via the Close button in the window, it will not properly stop the game, and will prevent starting the game back up again. I also tend to start the game in Lutris instead of via a desktop shortcut.

Dude, you are a saint. Thank you so much. It's not perfect, but much more playable than before.

archive.org is an exceptionally good source for finding OS ISO images.

Here's one for Windows 7. According to the description and comments below, it is a clean disk image of the installer.

it was somewhat expected, the uploader stated that it's an ISO they made with a software of an installer DVD. 😄

Have you tried just googling for the checksums? I googled the 36AE... one and the first hit was an archive.org download for a matching ISO.

[–] nebulaone@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Thank you, I will verify the checksum after downloading.

Out of curiousity, why not use a Windows 10 VM? Those signed ISOs should be readily available. windows 7 is a bit too vulnerable to be allowed internet access even in a VM, imo

[–] nebulaone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That would be my last resort option. It's just childish spite, honestly. Windows 10 is what made me switch to Arch Linux (insert I use arch btw meme)

[–] thepianistfroggollum@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a pretty solid OS now.

I don't know the game, but maybe it doesn't work in newer Windows versions. I have Windows 7 VM as a printer driver, because the printer drivers cannot be installed in newer versions of Windows and HPLIP only has partial support for HP PSC1315. It could be same case with other programs.

Absolutely not what you're asking, but tabletop simulator is the best way to play Magic The gathering online.

[–] nebulaone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Will keep this in mind, thanks. Is the playerbase still active?

[–] sparky678348@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, especially if your goal is to play four player commander.

It's to verify that the file hasn't been changed. This is done to be sure the file does not contain malware.

Exactly. Kann sein, dass ich das verwechselt habe.

Possibly https://atlasos.net/ - which is a stripped down Win10.

[–] detalferous@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not Arena, correct?

you can get arena working on steam on Linux pretty easily.

[–] nebulaone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Correct. Arena is working perfectly fine. And thanks to @d3Xt3r the issues with MTG Online have mostly been resolved.

[–] riodoro1@lemmy.world -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that would be highly illegal Cory and Trevor

I am not talking about a pre-activated ISO or cracked version. For a while Microsoft was offering the ISOs themselves. Edit: I should clarify: by "signed" I mean not tampered with.
