Everyone is welcome to join.

I have setup some scaling for the website(In k8s), so it should be able to handle a decent amount of people.
Can always add more resources, if there comes a need for it.

spreading the load - giggity

I wish there was a way to load balance signups. Kbin.social is sure to take the brunt of this next wave since it's the namesake.

I'm glad you went for a kbin.chat domain name, that should help new users to be a little less confused with choosing a home instance.

[–] frasassi@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or a lot more confused as today you can simply say kbin and tomorrow you have to specify which one.

[–] zeste@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I disagree, you can say kbin and mean either one and new users would still end up with a functioning account. It's much harder explaining to someone fedia.io is the same as kbin.

In theory, kbin instances could load balance by defaulting where registration gets posted.

As a bonus when logging in, you typically shouldn't have to choose which instance you connect to because it's in the username.

Only downside of load balancing is differences in admins and federation.

load balancing is up to the instance admins. if they're getting too many users, it's okay to restrict signups.

Is there a master list somewhere of all the instances on these two platforms (is that the right word?): Lemmy and kbin. Beehaw defederated from us degenerates (don't blame them - wish I could start up an account there lol) so I'm not worried about all the instances of Beehaw at this time.

From what I'm seeing both in terms of the magazines/communities I see posts from, there are several instances of Lemmy but only kbin.social, so is kbin.chat the second kbin instance...ever?

Nice! Glad to see more options popping up!

Good luck. when i joined on teh 12th i would have joined kbin.chat to load out everything as far as the new signups but i didn't know. all i ever saw or was spammed was kbin.social 0_o hopefully the n00bs that come over will see this post!

New to this whole lemmy/kbin/etc. thing.

There’s no SSO for these instances? That’s unfortunate.

[–] czech@no.faux.moe 3 points 1 year ago

Welcome. You don't need SSO because posts federate across all instances. From your kbin.social account you can search for news@lemmy.world to subscribe, vote, and post in that community. There are some glitches with certain instances that you will run into, for the time being, but things should smooth out over time.
