Ever since I was a kid, I've been dreaming of creating my own radio station. Well I finally made it happen but didn't know what to do with it, so I figured I'd offer up the concept to Lemmy to see if you're interested!

Tune in here: https://radiolemmy.com

I need DJs and curators! If you're interested, please click the "Join" link on the top right of the page of the station's website. No experience necessary. Play anything you want; all styles and genres are welcome. Hop on the airwaves anytime. Take requests, or don't. Mix and scratch, or just play one tune after another. Host a talk show/podcast if it suits you. Up to you. You can either use your own DJ/broadcasting software, or the Web DJ interface if you have no software/experience. Whatever works best for you.

As for curators, I need you to add songs to the Auto DJ rotation (i.e. what plays when there is no DJ on air). Click the "Suggest" button on the website to submit your favorite tunes! (no registration required)

Feel free to post your questions here, and thank you for tuning in! Let's make this thing happen!

Fuck, some of you cheeky waffles have a great musical taste. Thanks to you I already found two new artists (Daya and Tom Demac).

I am wondering how the backend infastructure is working. How are you getting the songs? Is it just using spotify api or something?

Backend is handled by AzuraCast. I upload the tunes by hand from various record pools for which I hold a license to distribute.

Cool. That sounds like a better way than it just being a spotify redirect.

I'm slightly worried about the legality. I have a mp3 collection for which I haven't paid anyone. Can we play these songs? Will there be any copyright infringement?

Everything is covered by my broadcasting license. Play whatever you want; doesn't matter where you obtained it from. The only thing the RIAA cares about is getting their cut per each song streamed.

Doesn't matter if you paid for them. RIAA and other agencies charge licenses and fees for streaming/public performances.

I have pirate streamed on the internet to small to medium crowds for the last almost 30 years at this point? More than likely this is completely illegal. And it might be fine as long as it stays small and under the radar. As much of the stuff I have done is. But you always run the risk of catching their ire and becoming a target for them to squeeze funds from. Things can get very bad very fast. Personally, I would be completely down with something like this myself. And have plenty of experience for such a thing. But seeing as how it could blow up publicly and the legal ramifications that could come from that. I'd probably wait to see if relevant streaming, licenses etc. Have been obtained. Even if you spend and make nothing from the stream that's not going to stop them from coming after you.

I've never looked into getting the licenses etc. Myself. For a short while I was with a legitimate outfit. I may still have contacts there and might check to see what the cost were. But again, this was well over 10 years ago. I'm sure they've decided to jack their prices a few times since then lol.

Sorry if I've missed it (still waking up, here), but is there a way to see / search a list of the current song library so we're not just all suggesting the same things over and over again?

Scroll down to the bottom of the page (where the live DJ request form is), then click the "auto DJ request" link. From there you can search the song database. It's kind of in a weird place ATM, I know.
