Tron: Ares was not that bad either. The visuals were a clear upgrade from Tron: Legacy and a handful of clips I've seen from the original Tron movie. You can notice that that they put a lot of details in places like Ares' HUD, consoles, the proprietary 3D printer and the virtual red-coloured world whose name I can't remember right now.

The soundtrack does complement the movie, although I noticed that they repeated certain "melodies" across the movie more than I would've liked. It's obviously not at par with Daft Punk but it resembles the spirit of the Tron franchise.

The plot is a real rollercoaster in terms of quality and believability. The backstory and plot of the main protagonists feel solid and so is the interaction between each other. Somehow Jared Leto decently fits the role of Ares and his dialogues don't feel out of place or cringey. On the other hand, the story gives too much power to the antagonist to the point that it clearly feels unfair. Also some action scenes feel like they're happening just because they have to, and probably give material for the trailers to give the viewers something to look forward to while watching the movie.

If you have no qualms with the involvement of Jared Leto, I would recommend that you give this movie a try. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it's surprisingly well made for a movie that that considered a flop by the users at Lemmy.

I'll concede that labeling it as "not bad" was too harsh/critical.

When the movie was released, the movie, the plot, the soundtrack, the special effects - were fantastic.

You're absolutely right, it did a fantastic job of capturing "nerd culture" for that time.

It's not that I feel the movie aged badly, but it's not as "unique" or relevant as it was in 2010. Other films have picked apart pieces of what made SPvW such a unique experience (for example: Free Guy).

Additionally, the current "nerd culture" has changed. You'll be hard pressed to find younger gamers play pixel graphic games (although, they are missing out).

Certainly, not all topics are outdated (ie: LGBTQ), but enough of is.

The film is a perfect nerdy time capsule for 2010, but the soundtrack with that dirty grunge sound will be around for a lot longer.

Yes, Williams is the guy that brought leitmotifs to movies (or at least the one everyone's heard of).

There was a YouTube criticism of Marvel Super Hero movies that was basically going around asking people to hum themes from favorite movies, almost always John Williams: Star Wars, Jurassaic Park, Indiana Jones... then he´d ask people to sing people from a Marvel movie, ANY Marvel movie, and people who just mumble incoherently that they couldn't think of anything. All those characters, all those movies, and not a single damn theme identifiable with any of character or movie, just a bunch of music generically recycled for Action or Sad or Bemused. Biggest missed opportunity in music history.

There's also some good commentary about how themes that had definite meanings in the original trilogy got recycled and reused until they meant nothing specific. I think Luke's theme in the swamp became Generic Music for Using the Force.
