My only wish is that they made a smaller version. I realize that that's probably impossible, given their goals (smaller phones are probably harder to repair). But man do I miss small phones

I too would like a smallerphone as well. Bringing back the 3.5mm jack would be a bonus, but a smaller phone is higher on my priority list. Even better if it's the same size as my old Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact.
legendary phone
Not quite as small but Zenfone 10 is reasonably small by today's standards and has a headphone jack
If you care about installing custom roms, then don't buy a Zenfone yet. Asus has us in the wait for the bootloader unlock tool for a year now, and I lost hope already :/
I actually upgraded to the Zenfone 8 from the XZ1C. I still miss the size as well as the dedicated camera shuttrr button. I also find it amazing that Sony went with a pull out sim tray. No more needing to poke a small pin just to eject it.
They removed the headphone jack to sell "fair"buds. Every manufacturer removing the headphone jack has coincided with or near the launch of Bluetooth earbuds. "Fair"phone is no different, so they probably won't bring it back.
$700 for basically 5 year old CPU and a phone that doesn't work or work well in most of the world. You're better off getting an old flagship, and it's probably better for the environment anyways.
My thoughts about the removal of the buds too. Really shitty move. Pretty sure people will still buy the buds if they like it even if the phone still has the 3.5mm jack.
I have the Fairphone 4 and I've been very happy with it. It's not as fast as the top models, but I have no use for a fast phone and every app I need works perfectly. It's been such a relief knowing I don't have to buy a new phone because the battery or the port died. And I tend to drop my phone regularly, so it's great that I can switch out the screen. I'll definitively buy another Fairphone when the time comes.
am still waiting for it to be available where i live
How about they bring it to the US already? They'd be breaking their profit ceiling in a heartbeat.
With that said, if they do an FP4 and release it close to EoL, they're not getting my money.
If I remember correctly it's already in US, but there's a retailer or some partner that sells them there which is not stated anywhere for some reason. Murena seems to have it. Not sure if that's the one I saw first time.
That's the FP4. The FP5 is not available in the US
Yeah I know. They said it's coming but have no idea when.
I want the headphone jack back.
20 years from now we'll have ditched smartphones for brain implants, and y'all will still ask for a headphone jack
And your point here is?
Honest question: why?
Type C headphones could easily be a thing (and are already). Then you just have the one port, which to me seems better.
Transparency: I'm someone who just uses Bluetooth headphones and I love them, so I have no real horse in this race. I just like not catching a cord on doorknobs anymore, lol
- Charging
- Companies keep shoving Bluetooth headphones down our throats, which are causing huge amounts of ewaste as the batteries are irreplaceable.
Point 2 is incredibly frustrating. That the ewaste problem has become so much better understood and yet the trend is to keep creating more of it.
I think Pine64 is making Bluetooth earbuds, but like their other stuff it aims to be super hackable and fixable. Wish that was the norm instead of solvent welding.
Tell this to apple. They're incredibly frustrating to replace yourself, if you even do so.
Absolutely. I've seen plenty of devices where self-repair was an "eh" afterthought at best.
Apple offensively attacks your attempts to fix the thing you purchased yourself with your own hard-earned money. They're positively evil.
Which is why it's so annoying watching all the other mainstream companies feel compelled to just ape them in every way.
games suck with bluetooth headphones due to latency, many workplaces outright ban even carrying them, and you cant charge and use wired at the same time without at least 2 ports. Some wired headphones are cheap, like 5 bucks even. Also you need to charge BT headphones, and some people have expensive 300 dollar plus headphones that are made obselete by not having a headphone jack.
Workplaces ban possession of Bluetooth headphones? Yeesh, lofi beats in one ear is the only thing that kept me from strangling some people as they took 15 minutes to explain "I can't send an email and I forgot my password and I lost my phone what do I do."
Half the appeal of Bluetooth earbuds (without the silly stems) was the secret agent appeal of giving your brain something to fixate on in stupid jobs where you stand around all day.
Unless it's literally around dangerous machinery or something I guess?
Anyway sorry this isn't antiwork but still lol. I like my Bluetooth earbuds, but I think headphone jacks should be standard too.
yeah ive had one that as strict about it before ... they can be used as tiny wireless remote recording devices , so in places where secrecy is important Bluetooth is no good.
Also hackers have demonstrated the ability to gain remote access to a device through overpowering a bluetooth signal from as far as a kilometer away using a radio apparently.
You wear one port twice as often though.
USB C to 35 mm female.
There is even some DAC ones.
A solution to a problem nobody asked for.
Bring back the headphone jack.
