I luckily divulged from FB messenger back in 2016. I use pulse sms on Android because I can text from a web browser. I realized I only used messenger because of the browser client. It's not private sense sms but eh, it's a pretty practical solution.
I'm not on Facebook, so don't use Messenger. I communicate with 90% of my friends and family using WhatsApp.
I would like to use Signal, but have the same problem as you - More than 90% of my friends and family don't use Signal unfortunately.
Whatever app my friends use.
Discord or Facebook Messenger lately.
My friend group all use SimpleX chat currently. It's arguably the most private messaging system available.
Itβs in beta on mobile though and thereβs no real web or desktop client so thatβs not amazingβ¦
The app itself is pretty decent at least.
I have no messaging apps, as I just don't talk to anyone in general.
Are you ok?
I guess I should have formulated that differently. One of the many benefits of having no friends is that I don't need any messaging apps.
I'm perfectly fine.
Telegram
Beeper is pretty cool
Signal. Quit Whatsapp cold turkey and just notified anyone that, yes, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but they'll have to install yet another messenger if they want to reach me.
Almost exclusively Telegram. It is by far the most feature complete one
The trick is to not concentrate on why you want to switch but instead find things that would make them want to switch.
I ultimately settled on Telegram (Signal at the time was too niche), so I targeted different people with different features. Stickers for some, bots for others, my wife appreciates not having to devote masses of space to WhatsApp photos, and everyone likes the ease of multi device access with no backups needed.
The main contenders largely share the same feature sets these days but there's still likely to be things that'll convince people to move elsewhere...
Almost all of my friends and family use signal. With a very technical friend I use element (matrix). For general communication with friends, sadly discord has proven to be most useful (even without Wayland support).
iMessage and Matrix.
- whatsapp: friends, family and business
- viber: grandma
- facebook messanger: conspiracy theorists like far family members and acquaintances
- telegram/signal: paranoid friends
- instagram chat: da chicks I have a crush on, but are way above my league
WhatsApp mostly as all my friends use it as well as FB Messenger.
I have a small group of people that use Session too.
I don't usually use apps to talk to people IRL, I text, call, email or just physically go talk to them. Once in a while I might use Discord or Steam if we're playing something together but that's about it as far as my private life is concerned.
At work we use IP phones and Teams.
I use Whatsapp to talk with most people, since everyone uses it in my country and I also use it for my job unfortunately, and SimpleX for people who are close enough to me for me to convince to install another app.
I honestly find it best to just stop communicating with people entirely.
I keep WhatsApp for family mostly, Telegram for 90% of my communication and Signal for the very privacy-focused friends of mine and more sensitive personal messages. Personally prefer Telegram for the great functionality and usability. Since I'm in a tech bubble, we host a few Telegram bots ourselves and are having a blast on there. It wasn't hard to convince tech-minded friends to switch. Back when I made the switch, I turned off WhatsApp notifications and just told people "if you need me ASAP, contact me on Telegram, otherwise you need to wait until I give enough of a fuck to check my WhatsApp". Those who tried Telegram and don't have too many contacts left on WhatsApp enjoy it because of the superior user experience. Signal is another story, I'd really like to like it, but it just looks and feels worse all-round, so I can't see myself convincing anyone to make a switch that I'm not 100% convinced of.
I've been using element for the best part of one year with most of my friends and family. It has some hiccups sometimes but pretty solid overall.
Signal. Started with one friend group and expanded from there.
WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal all via Matrix bridges.
Only the Matrix client is installed on my phone.
Iβm mostly Messenger. I have WhatsApp and standard SMS for a handful of people. I did use Signal for a while but ended up back on Messenger. Iβve used WeChat in the past but donβt have the need anymore.
Iβd like to use something a bit more federated but Messenger is where the people are.
Element/Schildichat/Matrix with Bridges to Signal, WhatsApp, Discord, Teams, Slack and a few more, all selfhosted.
You can, more or less easily, bridge Matrix to other messaging standards - e.g. Signal, WhatsApp, etc. either via selfhosted bridges or a external service like Beeper. The former is much more secure (as the bridge host will be able to read the messages in theory), but the later is much much easier to use.
Sadly my family uses mostly Facebook messenger but my husband and friends use LINE messenger π itβs cute but mostly popular in Japan, Thailand, Taiwan etc
LINE - just the tip of the iceberg of privacy and security concerns. https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/jp.naver.line.android/latest/
WhatsApp, as it's the app everyone is using here for 10+ years. I also have Telegram for some group chats.
Tried signal once in ~2017. Didn't like it and barely knew anyone else with it and so I deleted it.
I'm using Element One (https://element.io/element-one). It's a paid Matrix hosting, that provides bridges to Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp. It means that I don't have to care so much what people are on, and can try and get them slowly migrated.
No bridge to Facebook messenger?
There is a Matrix to FB messenger bridge, but it isn't part of the Element One service unfortunately. You'd have to host Matrix yourself for that.
I've noticed beeper advertises that they support Facebook messenger (among others) this could be good
Yeah, I need to have a look a Beeper. Worth knowing (if you didn't already) that it's exactly the same thing under the hood - it uses the Matrix bridges.
Messenger/SMS when talking to friends and family.
Telegram for participating in russian-speaking groups.
Matrix #1! It's the secure messenger for the fediverse!
Yeah it's amazing but not a single person I know IRL would know what I'm talking about, nor would they use it
Signal for the SO, some close friends and family; Facebook Messenger for work and acquaintances I don't care enough for to share my phone number with; Telegram for a couple of friends who are just used to it.
- I got my family and friends to use signal.
- Matrix (just me and my boyfriend)
Well that's cute, just you and your boyfriend being nerds together
