Yes, as a Debian user I am very excited for Plasma 6 in about 1 1/2 years

[–] BloodSlut@lemmy.world 45 points 10 months ago (2 children)

as an arch user (btw), plasma 6 has already been installed from the future

[–] Trarmp@feddit.nl 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

btw I use gentoo

...haaaaa, couldn't keep a straight face, nobody uses gentoo.

[–] hips_and_nips@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

nervously glances at my gentoo daily driver and three gentoo servers

As another Debian user, I’m excited to get it in maybe a month or 2!

[–] c10l@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Mostly, yes. Some unstable and bits of experimental mixed in.

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 months ago

yeah I wonder if I'll be able to switch to Wayland once it updates

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 32 points 9 months ago

KDE Plasma is amazing.
I am happy that they do Wayland as default now, the Wayland experience has long been flawless for me. I wonder when this update will hit the Steam Deck, since gamescope is Wayland I don't think Valve will go out of their way to enable X again.

it’s tomorrow??? i never keep up with any of this but i literally just installed endeavour with plasma 5 on an old laptop 2 days ago

(just realized i posted this on my alt on accident)

Endeavour OS is based on Arch and therefore a rolling release distro. So Plasma 6 should come with regular updates, right?

[–] TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Yes. It probably won't be available for install tomorrow, but I'm hoping its a pretty seamless upgrade once it lands in the repos.

[–] CatLikeLemming@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Speaking of seamless, I heard Plasma 6 is gonna come with Wayland as a default now. Do you think it'll automatically switch you over or is it just for fresh installs?

[–] TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago

My guess (and hope) is it'll be just for fresh installs. That's a big change and could break things for some people. But we'll see!

I might give Wayland a try, but likely stay in X for a while yet. I have a little bit of software (like KeepassXC) that doesn't quite have full Wayland support yet.

[–] madeline@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 9 months ago

it shouldn’t really matter for me anyway, the laptop i installed endeavour on is an old half broken hp pavilion that i rarely ever charge at all. i’m still excited to try it though

[–] Tixanou@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

As a Microsoft designer, I can't wait for this!

[–] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I didnt know but Ive been vibing on KDE's stuff a lot lately

[–] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Plasma is a MOOD. I love the vibe! XD

[–] 737@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 9 months ago

no >:( everything kde is perfect

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

honestly yeah. KDE takes forever to start and the Klauncher and main menu are so slow they always open the wrong apps. It's infuriating because otherwise it's a competent DE with great customizability.

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago

Also doesn't have very good touch support, forget wayland vs x11, the interface of KDE just isn't suited for touch screens, using it on the Steam Deck is incredibly frustrating because the interface is so small and requires scrolling more often than not.

[–] twoshoes@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm really interested. I've never gotten into the way KDE does things, so I've always stuck to gnome, but I'm always happy to see development and diversity in FOS Software. I'll definitely check out some videos about it

[–] Shark@iusearchlinux.fyi 4 points 9 months ago

I've been using kde recently and been able to get the workflow to be pretty similar to gnomes with a small amount of effort. Only thing I'm missing is when I'm in overview I don't have access to the top bar or the dock.

[–] ElectroLisa@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 10 months ago

Already used it since first betas, glad to see KRunner changes and the way VRR is handled on Wayland. Still waiting for fullscreen tearing though

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago

Don't know when MX will get 6.0 but I am excited despite not knowing what any of the new features are. All I know is Plasma looks beautiful to me and that's why I like it.

[–] RegalPotoo@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago
[–] usrtrv@lemmy.ml 5 points 9 months ago

I couldn't wait, I'm already using it for that HDR support.

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I bet it'll be a while before it's available on Steam Deck. So I won't get to see it until then.

Yes ! It's been like 20 years since I last used KDE, but I'll install this once it's available in the arch repo, and maybe make it my daily driver if all goes well. I like GNOME but I like tweaking my DE and I'm sick of extensions breaking every other release.

[–] enbiousenvy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm in Feb 28th already, it's not coming yet, where pama 6 >:(

[–] 737@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 9 months ago

Maybe it's German time, since the organization managing the KDE project is based in Germany? So you'll have to wait somewhere between 15 minutes and 24h + 15min.

I can't wait :3

[–] Heavybell@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Eagerly awaiting it going to ~amd64 on gentoo. This is the milestone I set myself to try desktop linux on my main PC again.

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Remind me in a few hours to tell you how the merge went!

Well, I rebooted to a black screen after login, but ctrl + alt + t works to bring up a new terminal window and alt + space conjures the... whatever it's called, thingy that can be used to launch programs, calculate things, or search files. So all in all, my computer's completely usable, I'd just like to get the menus and panels back sometime. Unfortunately, I have literally no free time, which is also why using Gentoo is such a brilliant idea for me.

[–] HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)
