I'm curious as to how many of you are TikTok users. If not do you watch short form videos anywhere else such as YouTube Shorts or Reels?

No Tiktok and am not a fan of short form videos in general.

The best of them will usually bubble up to Lemmy (formerly reddit) and/or my friends will send me a link. It's worked pretty well. lol. I only see the best of it, and don't have to deal with any of the rest.

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 33 points 6 months ago

No, I won't ever use TikTok. I don't watch any vertical video and I can't stand shorts. I use a browser addon to hide Youtube shorts from my subscription list.

[–] Pavidus@lemmy.world 20 points 6 months ago

Don't have TikTok, and despise that short form has taken over YouTube. It should be a separate app/space/whatever.

I still interact with TikTok links family and friends send me, and I fucking despise that. Close the "use the app" overlay, punch in the "I'm not a robot" code, turn on the volume (since when is muted the default video state, outside of porn?), and then loathe the fact that I just missed 60 percent of a glorified gif that I can't rewind, and won't repeat without pushing the app on me.

Nope, I've seen enough of their business practices and intent just from that interaction. It leaves me with no desire to sign up.

[–] kaishi@kbin.social 19 points 6 months ago

No. I don't like short form video content. My attention span is longer. I retain information. I want explanations and datapoints, not silly memes or reactions.

Also I don't want more apps on my phone, I don't want more companies mining my life for data. I don't want more privacy scandals. And I don't want any more Chinese government involvement in my north-american life.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 17 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

No need. All the content from TikTok I wanna see gets copied and posted to everything other than TikTok so I get all the stupid short form videos I want with none of the Chinese spyware.

If TikTok is banned, either YouTube Shorts will be used or a new site/app will take over. The hole left by Vine will be filled one way or another.

[–] sagrotan@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

No need either. My daughter shows me the best of in a curated fashion every day.

No and no. Fuck TikTok. Fuck YouTube. Fuck Facebook and all its derivatives. Fuck Snapchat. Fuck all of that bullshit.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

No, I avoid them as much as possible.

Remember that all these responses are from Lemmy users, so this is not even slightly representative of a real-world survey!

[–] GlenRambo@jlai.lu 6 points 6 months ago

I'm sure OP knows this. Its likely they want to see the middle of a vendiagram: People that use Lemmy and also watch short form videos.

[–] B1naryB0t@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Unpopular here, but yes, every day. I've been on it since 2019 and my wife and I will cuddle and watch tiktoks that we've sent each other throughout the day. We call it "TikTokTime" and really it's just a debrief period after work where we have time to look at the funnies together and decompress.

I also value tiktok as a social media website independent from influence by the US government that is more privacy-respecting than Instagram or YouTube. I use a modified version of the app that I don't get shown ads or tiktok shop videos, as well as natively increasing watch speed.

I am also autistic, as is my wife. She's also chronically ill. It's nice that we found online communities of creators who go through the same stuff we do. And when it comes to misinformation, I am very liberal with the block button. The tiktok algo is unmatched by other social media companies.

Please share with the class!

Also, it's very sad to see you have downvotes for just honestly answering the question. Lemmy is great, but the nerds on here need to lighten the fuck up. Use an app to connect with your wife? How dare you!

It's a revanced patch.

Nope. I don't really do videos, long or short form, but if I'm going to make an exception, it's more likely to be for a medium/long video on a topic I'm interested in than idly flicking through random short videos about whatever it is TikTok thinks I should see

[–] pop@lemmy.ml 7 points 6 months ago

I don't use the app, I don't think I ever have, and if I am sent a link, Redirector extension for firefox(mobile) handles it for me by redirecting me to a proxitok instance.

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Short form videos are brain cancer, ask any child psychologist or teacher

[–] Scrof@sopuli.xyz 7 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Absolutely not. It's a Chinese disinformation weapon.

No tiktok and no vertical videos. I generally prefer articles to videos so i can skim. I do watch YouTube videos for things like woodworking, gardening, etc. where the visual helps.

[–] redeyejedi@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Yes I use TikTok. I don't watch short form content on any other platforms. I started on TikTok back in 2019. During the pandemic it was great. In the last year or so it's become a lot more TikTok Store ads. Which I guess was inevitable for a free platform that doesn't charge you to sign up or access it. Just like FB or Instagram they make their money off user data and ads. The only other problem I've had recently is it seems that they don't serve up the content of the people I follow as much as they used to.

The TikTok Algorithm is very tailored to what you interact with. So to me it's always very telling when people spout off what they see when they use TikTok. My For You Page (FYP) is all DIY, woodworking, funny dogs/cats, and married people humor. While my wife's FYP is dancing, new music/bands, and other funny humor.

[–] rem26_art@fedia.io 4 points 6 months ago

I don't really go on tiktok's site ever. If anything, I do watch short form videos (including reposted tiktoks) on other sites like Instagram and youtube tho.

[–] olsonexi@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Never have, never will.

[–] Raptor_007@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago
[–] Drusas@kbin.social 3 points 6 months ago

No and also no.

[–] FleetingTit@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

No Toktik, no Instagram, no YouTube shorts since LibreTube. I only watch some that my subscribed channels post occasionally.

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (3 children)

No, I have never used TikTok. I was serving in the US military when it became a thing, and we were explicitly banned from using it.

I worked in the IT field while serving, and we discovered that the app gave itself root access to your phone (full administrative privileges), prevented you from fully removing it once it was installed, and would then slowly copy all the data on your phone and send it to IP addresses in China. It was a massive security vulnerability, so all military members with security clearances were banned from using it.

As for other short-form videos, I block all YouTube Shorts and refuse to touch Facebook Reels. I actually have F.B. Purity on my computer, which allows me to remove certain types of content from my Facebook feed. I have no games, no marketplace, no reels, and no ads or suggested content. Just a feed of posts from my friends list and that's all.

I really should get rid of Facebook completely, but it's my one social media site that keeps me in touch with people I've known since childhood. If everyone I know moved to a better platform, I'd remove FB immediately. But for now, I just keep it for the easy contact with people.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

This is untrue. To the best of my knoweldge, the TikTok app doesn't even check for root access, let alone utilize it. Nor can it receive root access on a non-rooted device in the first place.

I don't like TikTok either, but there's many more things that we can criticize them over which are actually true.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

I think he's referring to a non play store version of the apk

[–] dill333@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It gains root access and transfers all of your data? Any source on that, other than "trust me"?

I agree with others that it's full of disinformation and can be used for propaganda, but getting root access to your phone (which usually disables a bunch of banking apps and others) seems like a stretch. Unless there's a different type of rooting going on?

I'm sure there's shady shit going on, but I'd really love to see a reputable report on it.

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

This was passed down in tech reports from our higher military organizations while I was serving, along with official orders to never use the app, since it's a huge security vulnerability.

I retired 2 years ago, so I no longer have access to those reports. However, here are a few things I was able to scrounge up on the civilian side of things:

[–] jeze64@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

What if I told you staying in touch with people from childhood is entirely unnecessary, and you would have naturally moved on from them?

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When I turned 18, I joined the US military and left home. I spent 20 years living all over the world, wherever the military sent me. Every 1-3 years, I was in a new home where I knew nobody. If it wasn't for Facebook (and MySpace for the first handful of years I was serving), I would've lost contact with everyone I knew every few years.

The Internet was pretty primitive back then and smartphones weren't a thing yet, so I had to keep a phone/email address book on me, along with a bunch of phone calling cards if I wanted to contact people I know.

2 years ago, I retired and moved back home. Thanks to my Facebook connections, and staying in touch with people over the years, I had a community to return to. My wife and I are introverts with ADHD, so making new friends is really difficult. We'd basically be living like hermits if I didn't already know people in the area. So I personally think it's very important to maintain the social connections I have.

Nope,I am from India and it is banned here from maybe 2022.

I never created account on any meta platform. And I do not have youtube due to privacy reasons. But I keep track of some channels by invidious, So if they upload some shorts 🥳.

[–] HarbingerOfTomb@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Yes almost daily

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 3 points 6 months ago

No, and nowhere. Oh, occasionally a link from here, but in general, no.

[–] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

I do not but I do watch YouTube shorts. It's genuinely addicting. I've had to remove the YouTube app from my home screen to help me break the habit of opening it every time I pick up my phone.

not anymore really, plan to switch my last pointful sockpuppet account over some time. or just transfer it to someone else

Not consensually. My wife is constantly shoving them in my face, though.

[–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Used to watch tiktok, quit a while ago. One of the best decisions I've made.

Extremely rarely will a short catch my attention and I’ll click on it. Then im usually reminded why I don’t click on that shit.

I much prefer long form content (1+ hour videos) that deep dive into some topic. Shorts are either way too short to be of any value, or would be better off as a jpeg.

No. I am not an old person but I hate the short video format to be nerve wracking. It makes ne feel like there is mold growing in my brain also I would never use it and other similar social media like instagram or youtube shorts anyway due to privacy concerns

[–] thorbot@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Fuck no. Fuck that fucking Chinese spyware bullshit

[–] EssentialNPC@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

I use it almost daily, mostly for educational content. I really enjoy how much meaningful content people are producing there in easy-to-consume chunks.

I am also not surprised at how much the potential federal legislation in the US is getting characterized there as, "Ban TikTok." As much as I enjoy the service, they are absolutely doing their best to spread their own misinformation.

[–] grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago
[–] VanHalbgott@lemmus.org 1 points 6 months ago

Not really.

All I use are Lemmy, Mastodon, and Wordpress.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 1 points 6 months ago

In a way/sense that's very different from how others might say they do, like this. Quality be damned if someone happens upon my stuff to look into it, though it's not much of a competition when "quality" currently necessitates "deceptive".

[–] Aarrodri@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

No. Avoid most social media.
