General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

What an asshole.

Hans, are we the baddies?

[–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 15 points 8 months ago

Yes, keep ploughing ahead with the unpopular idea. That will certainly improve your tanking re-election odds.

Rejoining ECHR should be an election promise if this goes ahead

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 9 points 8 months ago

Fortunately, it they'll be out in their ear before this happens. I imagine they'll be saying all sorts of nonsense in the run-up to the election to keep the worst people happy. At this point, I think it's safe to ignore them.

Why are they so obsessed with this clearly unpopular policy? Just give up and move on. Come up with ethical alternatives? Or even a stricter border policy like other western countries have...

But of course, if they did that, then they wouldn't be able to use immigration and foreigners as a scare tactic on their elderly demographic anymore.

I know a few people who are strongly anti-immigration and even they think it's a stupid policy that is a waste of money.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 8 months ago

Because it is just a stupid policy that's a waste of money. If your goal is to stop immigration there are much cheaper and more efficient ways of doing it.

Also, would they have, anything to talk about? ..... 'cricket noises'....

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 9 points 8 months ago

2023 net migration was 672,000. Small boats accounted for 29,437, or 4%. But yes, totally worth the effort, the cost, and the scorched earth. Gotta ~~stop the pigeon~~ stop those boats!

I predict that the UK will not, in fact, leave the ECHR.

Rishi is just saying this shit to stir up the Tory faithful.

We thought the same about Brexit...

When we vote, we need to make sure the message is loud, clear and painful.

Give Liz Truss the spanking of her stupid submissive fantasies.

Downvotes?! There's Liz Truss supporters here?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

She seriously needs to lose her seat because otherwise she's going to continue to be an annoying political zombie that won't die.

[–] Spendrill@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

I think she's going to continue to be an annoying talking head wheeled out to put the 'libertarian' case for decades to come. The grift never sleeps.

[–] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 7 points 8 months ago

These cunts won't be in government by the end of the year so fuck them

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 8 months ago

Why are they continuing to announce policies, that are god awful. All they're doing is making the people who are on the fence even less likely to vote for them.

Meanwhile the racists who they're trying to appeal to have already gone to another party.

Who on Earth is all of this theater for exactly?

[–] catch22@startrek.website 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Hmmm this clearly hasn't been long in the planning

E: I hope it's another fuck up (in their terms), but you never know ..

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

I think the Good Friday Agreement might prove a roadblock in that regard.
