Friday, November 22, 2024: FLS - Stag Friday

  • Brush: Grizzly Bay - v24 Fanchurian 26mm badger
  • Razor: Chiseled Face - Titanium Legacy Razor
  • Blade: Personna - Lab Blue (5)
  • Lather: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag
  • Post: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag Aftershave splash
  • Post: Ginger's Garden - Unscented AS balm (+ menthol)
  • Frag: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag EdP

I felt like rocking the Stag trifecta today to celebrate the end of the week. CF base gave me a great lather as always. I also particularly enjoy the CF splash formula, for whatever reason it really agrees with my skin and has the perfect level of menthol for me.

I hope you all have a great Friday and an even better weekend.

Nice, I’ll probably try to find a decant at some point

Ah man, I don't think I've ever actually smelled the OG Old Spice. Maybe I'll hunt for some on the bay. Does the scent hold up in the soap very well or is it pretty muted by this point?

Thursday, November 21, 2024: SLS - First GEM Shave

  • Brush: Zenith/Stirling - 510SE-XL 31mm boar brush
  • Razor: GEM - Clog-Pruf
  • Blade: Personne - GEM PTFE (1)
  • Lather: Stirling - British Leather
  • Post: P&G - Old Spice Aftershave splash
  • Post: Stirling - Glacial Unscented Aftershave balm
  • Frag: Stirling - Stirling Gentleman

Tonight's luxury shave was my first with the recently-acquired Clog-Pruf, since the blades /u/schontzm graciously gave me finally arrived today (again, thank you!).

Shaving with the Clog-Pruf is definitely different from the DE razors I typically use. The correct angle wasn't too difficult to find, but the range of comfortable shaving angles seems much narrower to me. I got a very close shave, with a couple nicks ATG. I also had a bit of trouble under the nose, but I'm sure that will improve with practice.

British Leather -> Old Spice -> Stirling Gentleman was a great combo. I'll have to remember to try this one again.

This is almost certainly it.

Thursday, November 21, 2024: FLS

I couldn't find time to shave until much later than I wanted. I can't wait for this week to be over.

Have a good day y'all.

Wednesday, November 20, 2024: SLS

  • Brush: Zenith/Stirling - 510SE-XL 31mm boar brush
  • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .68
  • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (4)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Latha Taiga
  • Post: Barrister and Mann - Latha Taiga Aftershave splash
  • Post: Stirling - Glacial Unscented Aftershave balm
  • Frag: Chiseled Face - Summer Storm EdP

I like the scent of Taiga a lot; it might be my favorite pine-forward soap so far. However, I don't love the Latha base compared with others from BaM that I've tried. It seems to dry out faster than others. Perhaps I'm just not hydrating properly.

I very much want to try the TF frag. I have the Stirling EdT and feel that it wears off pretty quickly (as is typical for their frags). No shade at all, they’re so affordable that I feel 100% fine reapplying if needed. :)

How strong/long lasting do you find the TF?

[–] snooting@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Micromatic twist-to-open mechanism has your fingers safely a few cm away from the edge when the top cap opens.

Is the TTO knob on this razor still at the bottom of the handle?

Loving these write-ups btw, I’m learning a lot from them. It’s a great introduction to the different GEM razors.

Wednesday, November 20, 2024: FLS - Oro Valley BVWSC

  • Brush: Omega - 10048 boar
  • Razor: Rockwell - 6C
  • Blade: Bic - Chrome Platinum (2)
  • Lather: Stirling - Oro Valley
  • Post: Stirling - Oro Valley Aftershave splash
  • Post: Stirling - Glacial Unscented Aftershave balm
  • Frag: Stirling - Oro Valley EdT

A great shave for today's meeting of the Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club. Today we're shaving with Stirling's Oro Valley, which is a recent addition to my collection that's quickly become a favorite.

There is definitely a strong leather note, but I also get a touch of citrus and smoke. Not a thick, overpowering smoke. Think the smell the morning after a juniper brushfire. Mild, but quite lovely.

Drama free lather with the Omega, this thing always delivers with Stirling's base.

Have a great day y'all!

  • Brush: Zenith/Stirling - 510SE-XL 31mm boar brush
  • Razor: Chiseled Face - Titanium Legacy Razor
  • Blade: Personna - Lab Blue (4)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Paganini's Violin
  • Post: Barrister and Mann - Paganini's Violin Aftershave splash
  • Post: Ginger's Garden - Unscented AS balm (+ menthol)
  • Frag: Barrister and Mann - Fougère Armoatique EdT

First shave with the new boar brush and with Paganini's Violin.

The brush, being brand new, is very much eating lather which made it a bit difficult to get the hydration right. We got there in the end though.

Both of these are great additions, I'm glad to have them around.

Most excellent, thank you!

I had some exciting stuff arrive this morning and over the weekend!

First up, a nice Stirling haul:
Stirling Haul

This is the 31mm Zenith boar brush, the same that was used for the subreddit's prior "Moar Boar" group buy. The handle feels great in hand, and the knot seems just as nice as my other Zenith boar. My only complaint is that the Zenith and Stirling logos are pretty far off-level with the base of the handle. Not the end of the world, but it's unfortunate.

Christmas Eve in a bath soap is a great scent. I'm looking forward to trying it and Frankincense & Myrrh in shave soap format.

Deep Blue Sea aftershave is a re-stock. I love it with a bit of menthol.

The bonus was a sample of Haverford bath soap. I've previously used the shave soap/splash/frag, so this sample is most welcome. It's such a winning scent, especially for this time of year.

Next, some new hardware:
New Razors

From left to right:

  • 1940's GEM Clog-Pruf Single Edge Razor
  • Chiseled Face Titanium Legacy Razor
  • RazoRock Game Changer with .68 and .76 plates and the "Bulldog" handle

The Clog-Pruf seems in quite good condition for its age and price (~$15 shipped). I'm still waiting on some GEM blades and want to clean it up just a bit before trying it out.

The CF TI Legacy razor is a real indulgence, but it's a belated birthday gift from my wife, and we got a good deal from a kind soul on Discord. I've shaved with this razor a few times since I got it this weekend and it's quickly vaulted to the top of my list. If I had to pick a desert island razor right now, this is very likely the one I would pick. Likely, I'm still deep in the honeymoon phase, but this is truly an outstanding razor.

I got a good deal on the Game Changer on the zaar before I ordered the CF Legacy. It's a great shaver, I like how low profile the head is (very easy to shave under the nose), and the stainless steel construction is most definitely a step up from my Rockwell 6C. This will probably take the 6C's place in my collection.

And finally, a Barrister and Mann score:
Paganini's Violin soap and aftershave splash

I've wanted to try this scent since I first read about it, so when I saw the set for a decent deal on the zaar I snatched it up.

Clean, mild, and strangely complex. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know this fragrance.

I had the day off today, so I hacked together a port of the SOTD emacs plugin that @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social uses.

It's still a pretty rough implementation, but I wanted to share the repository here in case others who use Neovim might want to help me kick the tires. I'm fully aware that this is a niche within a niche, but you miss 100% of the shots you don't take!

I know there's some cleanup that needs to happen, and the config file format could use a bit more thought, but it works well enough for now. If anyone feels compelled to use it I'd welcome any feedback either here or on the repo itself.

The code is hosted on GitHub here.

I usually face lather and get consistently good results at this point.

However, when I get a .5 oz. or less sample I'll smush the soap down into a thin, even layer using one of those collapsible slow-feed pet bowls. Every time I get a foamy bullshit lather.

I'm unsure how to get an equally wet and slick lather with the bowl. Do I just need to keep adding water? Move to the face sooner? Give up and grow a beard?
