Deshittification

Found this site, figured at least this part of it aligned with the intent of deshittification.

Today, a few companies decide what you see, store what you do, and choose what you’re allowed to say. The tools recommended here are the way out: browsers, messaging apps, publishing platforms, and services that push back.

For years it never ceases to amaze me that the PS3 interface is so clean, nice, and pleasant to use. I was excited to hook it up tonight but was disappointed.

I now can't use the network without scanning a QR code in my phone or going to some website. I am also really upset that my PS3 updated to include bloatware that I can't remove (YouTube and Amazon, Spotify, can't recall). Like, how did they just enshittify something I've already owned for 20 years? F.

If I don't find a vendor who has no tracking / parasitic practices soon, I'm just going to stop gaming. I've already found Steam sending a million queries that I have to block. They forced me to be online to play a game after playing offline was acceptable just a week before. I remember just owning games and being left alone and I miss it.

First Reddit became toxic and unusable, news became mudslinging garbage, they are trying to ruin Linux with age verification, and now they are even reaching back to enshittify 20 year old gaming consoles. I just want to go live in the woods at this point. We can't address issues faster than they enshittify the entire world.

Anyways, anyone know a deshittified gaming hack?

Some thoughts about Codeberg as an end-user

A few weeks ago I had to ask a dev there something. As I'd never used it, to my surprise, figuring the UI/UX out was pretty seamless, like the designers went for a lean version of GitHub.

RSS pulls a lot of things and is easy to spot. Visual noise is minimal. Update links are legible. Color scheme has a good contrast despite being inaggressive. And elements in the page are blocky and so divide the different parts of a page efficiently.

Politically, apparently some people promote it for not being American (apparently German?). Dunno the company behind the service, and also don't know how tied to their government they are, so can't comment on that front.

Also can't comment on maintaining a project there, but since a site's design is usually consistent, I'd presume it's lean/seamless there too.

Overall, imo as an end-user, it did seem decent, and wish more sites went for this design philosophy when trying to be an alternative to other services.

Only concern is RSS: it does pull a lot of things, and I couldn't find a way to filter stuff out, so I worry the noise a more popular or active project would cause.

In the discussion of the announcement of !DeMeta@lemmy.world, pertaining here, it was suggested to add the DeMeta community and !deGoogle@discuss.tchncs.de to the sidebar here. It sounded like an interesting idea, as they can give directions within their specific scopes to how to deshittify, so added them I have.

Any more that could be added?

Although not everything on the to-move-away-from lists (as far as I know) is enshittified big tech, a good deal is, enough to the point where I think it does at least fit the spirit of helping people get out of enshittification, of deshittification. Mod, feel free to remove if this doesn't fit.

Those videos from him for alternative technologies are quite a departure from his gameplay videos style, but it's good that someone of his size is doing those (and at least imo, his tech-related videos are much better). And he seems to be doing mostly those for a while now.

And if it feels like pushing for deshittification is not giving results, may someone like him getting interested in the matter show that pushing gives results, even if they're not immediately visible. =D

The brother printer my spouse has had for ages is finally running out of ink and a quick chedk shows that they don't make cartridges for it anymore, you cant reset them, and you can only buy dubious 3rd party options on amazon for $150 each. For that kind of money id rathet find a printer that let's me put of the scam, but im not finding a lot of options there. Does anyone have advice?

We host wikis on behalf of game studios and other companies using MediaWiki. Weird Gloop began as a company formed in 2018 to move the RuneScape Wiki from Fandom to an independent website, and we've since helped other wikis do the same thing, including the Minecraft Wiki and League of Legends Wiki.

While we're on the topic, for wikis currently on Fandom, there's also replacing "fandom" in the URL on fandom wikis with "antifandom". For example, change minecraft.fandom.com to minecraft.antifandom.com. It'll remove the crap formatting and ads everywhere and put it back to the useful format fandom wikis used to use around 2008ish, pre-being-gobbled-up.

Xikipedia is a pseudo social media feed that algorithmically shows you content from Simple Wikipedia. It is made as a demonstration of how even a basic non-ML algorithm with no data from other users can quickly learn what you engage with to suggest you more similar content. The algorithm runs locally and no data leaves your device.

Once Xikipedia has loaded, it is available fully offline, and you can even install it as an app by clicking the install button.

Personally having trouble with getting this to work on an iPhone, but I always thought hijacking the techniques used to keep our attention on things that make other people money, and using it for our own good, like endlessly clicking Wikipedia articles for our own edification instead of endlessly clicking outrage bait, would be cool. Now someone went and did it, albeit with a demonstrative intent instead of "hook you on useful information instead of my lootbox gambling game".

Wanted to post about O&O Shutup since I just used it on my work computer, and was looking for a preexisting Threadiverse post mentioning it. Found this.

The first thing I use is Windows 10 decrapifier.

To use this, open up Powershell ISE as an administrator, and paste the script into a new editor window, then run it. It will automatically remove all the garbage Windows 10 installs by default. It works pretty well with Windows 11 as well.

This tool shuts down a lot of the different telemetry stuff to keep windows 10 your own. It also works with Windows 11.

Finally, I like to install OpenShell, a start menu replacement for Windows 10. Right now it doesn't easily work on Windows 11, I use Start11 on windows 11. Openshell doesn't just replace the start menu with a windows 7 style start menu, it reimplements search so the search works much better and doesn't rely on windows search service.

Here's a bonus tip that only applies to Windows 11: If you use the open source tool rufus to create your installation media, you can tell rufus to create installation media that bypasses all the new TPM requirements. I have a computer capable of running windows 11, but I don't want to give them access to my TPM, I don't want secure boot, I don't want any of this stuff. I want to run my computer the way I want to, and this install media allows that. You lose some minor features here and there.

Youtube being the dominant video streaming platform, its decisions can have problematic ripple effects. And as it's not unusual for their changes in rules to retroactively nuke videos from the site, a preservation tool such as the one linked is a welcomed one.

Functionally, it's pretty similar to Archive Today in that it's pretty basic and straight to the point.

Also storing videos is hella expensive, so if you find the tool good and you have some spare change, please donate to it.
