Happy Easter

I hate Easter. Pretty much always have and I think I always will. Let’s all freak out about Jesus pulling a hat trick. Well guess what folks, zombies aren’t real so Jesus didn’t pop out of a tomb after three days. Sorry for the spoiler.

But my biggest issue with it is the religious fanatics. Like people seem to lose their minds over the Jesus shit. This guy for example wants to rearrange an entire baseball schedule. My in laws are going to cram 25 people into a house that can’t fit more than 10. All because of Zombie Jesus. Thank you Zombie Jesus for ruining my spring every year, asshat.

Mission Preparation Class for the stake. Here are the details:

When - First Sunday of every month at 6:00pm, starting on April 7th.

Where -*****

Who - All youth in Grade 12 and young adults who are preparing for or considering serving.

What - Since there isn't a set curriculum, I am going to focus on helping the youth to think about all of the many reasons to serve a mission and to choose to serve for the reasons that are most important for them. Each week we'll focus on another reason and talk about how a mission can bless their lives and the lives of others in that way. My hope is that they will come out of the class with a desire to serve and strong reasons for serving that will help sustain them through difficult times. Some topics that I have thought about so far (subject to change):

  • To help bring the gospel into people's lives

  • To learn how to become more like the Saviour

  • To learn how to receive and act on revelation

  • To learn how to better study the scriptures

  • To learn how to live and work with a companion

  • To learn the Gospel and gai n a deeper testimony of it's truths

  • To get experience with feeling negative emotions like anxiety and fear, but still being able to important things

So religion is a pretty common theme in his books. Stormlight and Elantris (more for the latter) have heavy religious influence.

I'm reading Elantris now, and I can't imagine a man who understands religion as well as he does (based on his writing) believes anything about the TSCC. This thought just came to mind as he's describing how the one dude knows how to manipulate the masses, using their pride and shame to his own ends.

Anywho, just throwing that out there. 🤷

Have a great weekend, and a lovely second Saturday everyone!

Kanaan VyShonne Barton says he’s following all other school rules but shouldn’t have to cut his hair: ‘My locs represent strength’

A Black student at a Mormon university in Hawaii said he has been told by staff to cut his shoulder-length hair because it does not adhere to school policies, he said.

Kanaan VyShonne Barton, a student at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, told the Salt Lake Tribune he has been engaged in a battle with the school since September over the length of his hair, which he has refused to cut.

The university requires students to follow an “honor code”, which states hair should be “neatly trimmed”, although the code has no official guidance on length.

A businessman pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiring with the leader of an offshoot polygamous sect near the Arizona-Utah border to transport underage girls across state lines, making him the first man to be convicted in what authorities say was a scheme to orchestrate sexual acts involving children.

Moroni Johnson, who faces 10 years to life in prison, acknowledged that he participated in a scheme to transport four girls under the age of 18 for sexual activity. Authorities say the conspiracy between the 53-year-old Johnson and the sect’s leader, self-proclaimed prophet Samuel Bateman, occurred over a three-year period ending in September 2022.

Authorities say Bateman had created a sprawling network spanning at least four states as he tried to start an offshoot of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which historically has been based in the neighboring communities of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah. He and his followers practice polygamy, a legacy of the early teachings of the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which abandoned the practice in 1890 and now strictly prohibits it. Bateman and his followers believe polygamy brings exaltation in heaven.

It makes me cringe just as much as it did the first time I saw it.

“Men are that they might have joy.”

Have you ever noticed that when you’re enjoying yourself, it’s probably a sin?

Sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll… Normal things that normal people enjoy, alcohol in moderation, R-rated movies, chatting with friends at the pub, having a hobby, women having a career.

And Mormons are told that we’re never doing enough church stuff. Read scriptures more, pray more, fast more, do more family history, go to the temple more, spend more time in your calling, more home and visiting teaching. It’s not only exhausting, it’s dour.

Infamous mommy vlogger Ruby Franke sentenced to up to 60 years for child abuse

Ruby Franke, a once-popular online mom influencer with millions of followers, has been sentenced to four one- to 15-year terms in prison for child abuse.

Franke pleaded guilty in December to four counts of aggravated abuse against her children. She and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, had each been charged with six counts of felony child abuse in September.

Utah Judge John J. Walton sentenced both to four one- to 15-year terms on Tuesday, but state law limits the maximum aggregate sentence for consecutive terms to 30 years. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will determine the length of time they will spend behind bars, NBC News reported.

For years, the 42-year-old mother documented her strict parenting style with her husband Kevin Franke and her six children on her YouTube channel, “8 Passengers.” She and Hildebrandt also doled out parenting advice in videos.

Recreational cannabis use is legal here. I took some before church, hoping to make the two hours more enjoyable.

When I walked into the chapel, I felt happy and relaxed and really good. That’s when I realized how I’m supposed to feel at church, and the fact that I never have.
