I got the domain yesterday, everything is now working okay.

A few lessons learned

• DNS changes take a bit of time, update your TTL settings in your zone records to 1 hour instead of waiting 24 hours like me
• migadu is surprisingly easy to configure for the .xyz, got a few errors with the .eu but managed them by using the registrar NS instead of migadu's
• netim is a nice registrar. I thought my ticket was getting ignored, but when it got picked up the support person was very reactive

So I've been thinking about improving my current email setup, so that my partner can also have her own email (she currently uses Gmail, and is open to switching, but I have to make it easy)

I first considered the usual email providers (Mailbox.org, Posteo), but then I was thinking that it could be nice to use my own domain to have more control and make the thing future-proof.

So here's my suggested setup

• getting a domain name that could look like a niche email provider (e.g. coolmail.eu)
• getting a https://www.migadu.com/pricing/ micro plan (I don't need more than 200 in / 20 out), and create a bunch of email aliases such as me@coolmail.eu, her@coolmail.eu, us@coolmail.eu, powerbills@coolmail.eu, etc
• getting a Lite https://addy.io/#pricing plan , and set up addy.io aliases for when we don't want to share our coolmail.eu emails (e.g. restaurant bookings, online store accounts, Fediverse accounts, etc.)

The main pros of this setup is

• staying in control of the coolmail.eu domain: if migadu goes down, I can stil switch this solution to a similar service like mxroute
• being able to switch from addy.io to another "junk alias" provider if needed
• not exposing the coolmail.eu addresses to most of the data leaks sources
• being able to use migadu as the one centralized place to manage our emails

Now that I think about it, I have one question for Migadu users: in my scenario, I assume I would only be using one Migadu account. In that case, would I be able to see all the emails sent/received by all the addresses in that domain (including my partner)? I guess in that case she should still keep another email address on the side for her personal emails... (I don't think it's realistic to expect her to use E2EE)

Am I missing something else?

The recent federal raid on the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson isn’t merely an attack by the Trump administration on the free press. It’s also a warning to anyone with a smartphone.

Included in the search and seizure warrant for the raid on Natanson’s home is a section titled “Biometric Unlock,” which explicitly authorized law enforcement personnel to obtain Natanson’s phone and both hold the device in front of her face and to forcibly use her fingers to unlock it. In other words, a judge gave the FBI permission to attempt to bypass biometrics: the convenient shortcuts that let you unlock your phone by scanning your fingerprint or face.-

It is not clear if Natanson used biometric authentication on her devices, or if the law enforcement personnel attempted to use her face or fingers to unlock her devices. Natanson and the Washington Post did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The FBI declined to comment.

Set up a framework to fully man-in-the-middle my own browsers' networking and see what they're up to beyond just looking at their DNS queries and encrypted tcp packets. We force the browser to trust our mitmproxy cacert so we can peek inside cleartext traffic and made it conveniently reproducible and extensible.

It has containers for official Firefox, its Debian version, and some other FF derivatives that market a focus on privacy or security. Might add a few more of those or do the chromium family later - if you read the thing and want more then please let us know what you want to see under the lens in a future update!

Tests were run against a basic protocol for each of them and results are aggregated at the end of the post.

Posting with ambition that this can trigger some follow-ups sharing derived or similar things. Maybe someone could make a viral blog post by doing some deeper tests and making their results digestible ;)
