DHS wants to build a $300 million new ICE facility in a predominantly Black, low-income neighborhood in Washington, DC. But DC residents are fighting back. Organizers are demanding contractors and elected officials walk away from the plan, and are calling for the redirection of federal resources from Trump’s anti-immigrant offensive to fund critical community services in the neglected neighborhood instead. Plans were announced under the Biden administration in 2023 to relocate and consolidate ICE headquarters to the St. Elizabeths West Campus in Southeast DC, the site of a former state mental hospital. Community advocates have blasted the lack of transparency and community input, saying its proximity to a preschool, a hospital and a shelter for the unhoused make it unsuitable for the purpose. St. Elizabeths is also a historical landmark for mental health reform, as the hospital was an early adopter of the "moral treatment" movement in the 19th century.

A person was detained and assaulted by a group of men impersonating ICE agents near Woodburn, Oregon on July 17, according to state police and the FBI who are investigating the attack. After being pulled over by an unmarked SUV flashing red and blue lights, the unidentified person was pulled from their car and placed into the SUV, where they were assaulted by a third man who claimed to be the “guard,” according to investigators. All three men were wearing facial coverings and tactical vests marked as police, and had fake law enforcement badges. The driver was held for around 20 minutes before they were released and drove themselves to the hospital, where they say they then received fraudulent text messages offering legal aid. Community organizers say this is not the first incident of ICE impersonators attacking residents, and that these crimes will continue as long as masked federal immigration agents are authorized to detain people without identifying themselves, showing warrants, or being held accountable for their operations.

“Feed the monster!” A judge in the US has granted final approval for a $1.5bn payout in a class action lawsuit brought by authors against AI company Anthropic. The settlement was originally reached last year but some authors argued it wasn’t big enough, and that it overcompensated Anthropic’s lawyers. It was approved this week after a judge dismissed those arguments. It is still the largest known copyright recovery settlement in US history. On Novara Live, Michael Walker and Aaron Bastani note that the settlement was awarded because Anthropic pirated authors' books. However, the judge ruled that training AI on copyrighted work was allowed. This, says Walker, makes the ruling less significant than it might have been. “The companies are using the corpus of creativity, without the original producers of that knowledge getting paid.”
