A Michigan man is accused of fatally shooting his neighbor after getting into an argument with him on the street, officials said.

Devereaux Christopher Johnson, 47, of Canton, was arraigned Monday on first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

The victim -- 35-year-old father-of-two Nathan Morris, also of Canton -- was shot and killed while on a walk Saturday morning, the prosecutor's office said.

The suspect allegedly started threatening Morris' family after one of Morris' daughters touched the neighbor's mulch, according to a statement from former RNC National Committeewoman Hima Kolanagireddy, a friend and colleague of the victim's, shared on the Michigan GOP X account. Morris stayed behind to try and "diffuse" the situation while his family went home, her statement continued.

Johnson was additionally charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm.

Why in the fuck did this guy have a gun in the first place?

Better judged by 12 than have your neighbor’s daughter touch your mulch.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 14 points 3 months ago

I mean, it sounds here like the mulch was already touched, so I don't think that could be changed even by taking on first degree murder charges. I think the question here is more whether it's better to go down for murder than to let the mulch-touching go uncontested.

Private sales not requiring a background check means it's easy for people to buy a gun without even giving the seller a name. Like, they don't even have to give a fake one, they can just not mention a name.

But a lot of idiots are convinced the reason they can sell a used gun for more than a new one costs is they're savvy businessmen...

And not that people pay a premium if they can't pass a background check.

You know perfectly well why. Because one of his buddies who believes "gun ownership is a human right" gave it to him. Or "accidentally lost it" at his place.

This shit is rampant, and is why the US needs gun registration.

You see, you can't put toothpaste back in the tube.

But you can damn well start cleaning it up instead of smearing it everywhere.

You can easily have a non-felon buy it for you.

You could buy it off of a private individual.

It's America, home of the brave and land of the gun purchase loophole.

This is America.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Because we don't have universal background checks.
