Meh. Yes and no. There's actually quite a few places that accept Bitcoin at this point. Alternatively, you can use it to buy gift cards for many different retailers.

But yeah, you usually can't walk up to the checkout counter and tap your card, unfortunately.

It's not unfortunate. It's not accepted as currency because it does none of the things currency is for.

Volatility in a currency makes it completely and utterly useless.
