LPT: The Lemmy-Federate project is able to do that automatically with a single click by using a bot on each participating server, which then unsubs once a real user from that instance subs to the community. 😄

I'm aware of this, but some instance owners prefer to not enable it due to network and storage consumption: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/28227815?scrollToComments=true
