The games take place after the books, so it's green field. Although it sounds like I canonizes the ending of witcher 3, (but honestly there was only one "correct" ending to the witcher 3 unless you're a heartless bastard)

If its new material than it should be judged on whether its good overall or not. And if its got the same vibe as the previous material.

The vibe is overwhelmingly closer to the books than the series. The devs are massive fans and it shows.
