There's a long-standing myth in America that prisons exist to punish and then rehabilitate dangerous criminals. People consistently seem shocked to discover that these institutions exist more to cover up rampant poverty, to extort working people for their money and labor, and to inflict misery on ethnic and gendered minorities as a means of social control.

Reiyn Keohane is a 24 year old who has been in jail for over eleven years, on charges of attempted murder. This is a person convicted and sentenced to a decades-long imprisonment at the age of thirteen. She has repeatedly attempted self-castration. She has repeatedly attempted suicide. The textbook case of someone with profound mental health issues who Florida's society has completely and utterly failed.
